Just wondering, as I also do that sometimes, that is critizing modern gaming, but in all honesty I think I'm blinded by nostalgia and tend to see games of the past with rose-tinted glasses.

But is there some truth to it, though? That for instance these days AAA titles are too focused on heavy set pieces while providing a sub-par gameplay experience?

What do you think, System warriors?

Just like old game design there is plenty of modern trends worth bitching about.

Also, complaining is just inherently, really, really fun.

Basically because all AAA studios play it safe these days and release the same crap over and over while adding more micro transactions each time. This is also why the indie scene has been booming as of late because they are willing to try something original more often than big studios are allowed to under their big dog publishers.

I get irritated by loooong cutscenes. If I wanted to watch a video, there's YT. So, if I can't skip them, I'm gonna bellyache about them. Unfortunately, a number of my favorite games are cursed with them.

I also prefer the story be simple enough so that I can piece it together while I'm playing the game and not have to sit through yet another cutscene. Let the player be the one to figure out what the story is.

My theory is that they are young, and think that hating modern games is the cool behavier to have.

Anyone who has actually experienced gaming in past generations, would know for a fact that games are more polished, there are much more diversity, and quality games come out at a much faster rate now.

Microtransactions, DRM, lootboxes, excessive SJW content, crap DLC are the main ones we all have a right to complain about.

Those really suck to see in modern games.

Greedy practices always existed, and the solution will always be the same: don't support them and focus on everything else.

I have played over 150 games this generation, never bought a DLC, never paid for a microtransaction, and i'm having a blast.

Blame social media to create this type of narrative. I had to wonder why so many controversies and so-called "news" are coming from social media?

Triple A games are mostly about cinematic set pieces in post apocalypse worlds where you'll fight zombiesque creatures.

Most of the complaining was coming from the mainstream media activists, and from consumers outraged over actual bad stuff. And I think that there was so much of it the past year that it set a mood for everyone to start complaining about something. Which is fine. But it would also be cool if we celebrate things! Like Guacamelee 2 on the Switch that I'm playing now, and it's more fun than I expected.

Now that former Gawker may be taking over Kotaku, I wonder if we'll see less anti-gamer and anti-game hit pieces from them. And EA is slowly losing their fight against gambling laws. So who knows, 2019 may be the year when the evil people get taught a lesson, and things turn for the better.

There are terrible practices for sure but I think many people think their 2 cents is worth more than it actually is. Gamers will also just hop on bandwagons of hate because their favorite YouTubers follow suit.

Me personally when it comes to modern games I don't know how to view everything. Big AAA games are more expensive to make but it's also partly because of how much is spent on marketing. Consumers demand bigger and better games but want to get everything for $60? Nobody has the answers on what is the best way to do things and so many get frustrated and just take to the internet to whine.

Gamers really should be as loud as possible, no one has their back. Be the the media, publishers or developers.

All these fellows would just love it if gamers bent over and spread.

ROFL you can still do all of that without fanboys. Good lord people! Fanboys are a disease to gaming period! Saying fanboys are a righteous bunch is just laughable.

Yet, they get an old game style in Crackdown 3 and hate on it cause it isn't the generic AAA garbage they want it to be.It's like people saying everyone hates microtransaction, yet, everyone actually likes them. Aka fake narratives people push cause their finger is far from the pulse.

People loved BotW cause it didn't do all the things you talk about, yet Crackdown 3 does same thing but its lame cause its Xbox, I mean BotW can't be good, it looks like a last gen game.

Modern games have excellent gameplay, actually. It's just the heavy emphasis on storytelling and cinematography that's the problem. Not enough gameplay.

Kingdom Hearts 3 has an over emphasis on shitty storytelling coupled with mediocre sparse gameplay. So, I can definitely agree.

The best example I can give is if you played Battlefield 2 back in the day and now look how the new one plays. That's everything wrong with modern gaming to put it in simple words it got dumbed down.

@fedor: People can't talk about a Xbox game? We can't possibly talk about it without being butthurt and sad, when all I'm doing is pointing out your own stupid ass hypocrisy, and every time we do, you target us personally cause you know we're right. You guys be as toxic as you can toward Xbox people cause you just wished we would stoop to your lows and harass you about your precious games, and it pisses you off so bad you have to sit there and monitor these forums, twitter and youtube comment sections to make sure no one talks about Xbox without you spreading your filth all over it.

If I point out the fact that people do bitch about modern games, yet get something they ask for and don't want it just cause its a Xbox exclusive, you realize whatever you call me, is exactly what you are, cause you're the one having an emotional outburst, you're the one calling me names rather than telling me I'm wrong.

I'm pointing out a very current event that is completely within confines of this conversation, so calling me names clearly means I hit a soft spot and can't handle actual conversation cause your ignorant ass minds are incapable of talking about Xbox without your emotions running rampant.

It something that come up in conversation. My gamer coworker she alway say many people around her bitch about everything, not just game. No fun. It like real life troll, troll about game, troll other people about game. In our line of work it better is to avoid troll drama.

As a example in the older you get it easier to just skim with your eye and then troll will be troll and nice people will be nice people. In work I deal not with troll but similar which can cause agitation. If you are adult troll just become a big eye roll. It sad what people stoop to. It necessary to pray for children. Parent don’t realize it how you raise monster.

Thankfully my favourite genre doesn't have some boring arse story like 99% of games these days, led by Sony devs who put story above all else.

Games are meant to be played not watched.

When the gaming industry was new, things were created with creativity and imagination rather than a solid bottom line quest for profits.

Also, now with the internet being available to basically anyone, any dipshit can say anything and it can be seen across the globe.

The Yakuza games manages to have a crap load of amazing cutscenes and story telling while having heaps of gameplay content. A game can both have a good mix of story telling and gameplay at the same time.

The reason anything new gets praised or criticized is because it's in the collective thoughts of people in the now. People don't talk about how shitty the Order is anymore, or Spore, or Devil May Cry 2.

That's all they know how to do, gaming YouTube channels reinforce this behavior though because faux outrage makes for better clickbait, and conformist automatons just regurgitate popular sentiment. They feed off each other and now the gaming world is a chaotic bullshit tornado.

Plus, it's easier for people to shit on games for petty reasons instead of making a compelling case of why people should take a chance and try this or that game out. Seems almost impossible to do these days.

Outside of gaming, if you disagree with someone and is unwilling to debate with him, you will just use derogatory terms at him as to stop the debate. It is quite unhealthy not to have a debate as there is some good in debating with people whose views differs from yours.

There are gamers that points out valid complaints and critiques, there are gamers that bitch out about petty things and there are judgemental gamers who think they are better than other gamers by pointing out what they dont like about other gamers who dared voice their opinions, valid or not.

Complaining is fun if you keep it in the context that your opinion in worthless.

Plus, there are some things that could be done better, or some things you simply prefer would have been done differently.

Nostalgia is tricky. I will always cherish the memories of older games, but I will also keep them in the context of this simple truth: even if it was the best they could do, a game from 1995 can only be so good by objective metrics compared to a game from 2005, and that game compared to a game from 2015 will only be so good, and so forth.

Everything about games--the gameplay, the audio, the visuals, the voice acting, writing, dialogue, production values, and so forth--is just better. Even these awesome indie titles that go for the whole "retro" things are insanely better than the games they try to mimic.

One thing I miss about classic game design is the difficulty. Old games were harder than modern games. Gamers today want easy games, and complain if a game is too hard, so hard games just aren't made anymore (with very few exceptions).
