What are, for you, the deciding factors to buy a new game?

I'd say it's mostly a matter if I liked the demo or not. And if there's no demo, I read some reviews and see some video footage. The box cover is not totaly unimportant to me either, as funny as that may sound.

I go by my own judgement sometime will be slightly influenced by a review but most of the time i do my research first.

I buy because it either looks good, or is part of a franchise... Sometimes i'll check reviews and see if it's worth a buy or a complete load of crap.

if it has a demo i will usually be influenced by it, but if not i will just keep up to date on any previews, interviews and gameplay videos. i will watch some reviews, but i dont really take them that seriously, its just to see if it shows any features i didnt know that much about.

I buy games so that when I want to play them, I don't have to hope and pray some nearby video store has the game available. And that's highly unlikely with older titles. Gamefly and the like services are too expensive too. I'd rather that game rental money towards something I can keep.

Usually gameplay videos help me to decide on what game I want next. Long ago before I had Internet, I used magazines like EGM (and video store rentals) to help me decide. I don't usually like demos though unless they're well done like Joe Danger one.

It depends. Often I hear good stories about a game on these forums, and I'll check out gameplay videos, read a couple of reviews, and maybe try a demo if it's available, and then I'll buy it. But of course I also buy games because they're from my favourite franchises, because I want to see what all the fuss is about, because they're on sale, etc.

I don't mind alot of the reviews unless it is quite bad. I usually buy a game because I want to have fun with it.

I throw a bunch of names of games into a hat and draw from there. I leave it to Lady Luck.

I buy maybe 5-10 games a year max so typically I check everything out well before purchasing. I check reviews, how much it costs, how much it will hold my interest, how long the game will last. The list goes on from there. The box cover plays no part in my decision since that was an option. A demo helps but I rarely play demos ever.

Deciding factor.. maybe a demo, and some reviews from users.

Reviews may help me decide if I'm going to buy a game that I'm interested in, but they won't get me interested in a game that I had no interest in before. Demos got me interested in Darksiders, Borderlands, and Torchlight, etc., and I'm buying Crysis 2, Patapon 3, Dissidia 012: [Duodecim] Final Fantasy, etc. because I loved the previous games... So, all of the above.

Not for what purpose but what makes you buy it.

Well, maybe I should put a different question. One unobvious question and hunderds will missunderstand :P

I don't read reviews. I look at videos, playthroughs, demos, and screen shots. If I'm still unsure, I'll borrow/rent the game. Then I decide whether it's going to be enjoyable enough to justify whatever it costs.

That wasn't the question. He's not asking why you play the game, but what got you interested in it in the first place. I'm pretty sure you don't got to GameStop and buy random games. Something about the games you buy had to have caught your attention.

I check the genre, and some gameplay features/watch videos to see if I think I will like it or not. Then I check reviews to see if the game has any major problems that would inhibit the fun factor.

I go to the forums and ask the actual gamers how they like the game.
