Why do you die so quickly in older games?

I was just playing DK Country(awesome game BTW) and I couldn't help but notice how just touching an enemy gets you killed and makes you lose. Why did older games like NES or SNES make you die so easily? Games like Mario had no health bars and you lost because you made one mistake.

Well.. They where short so the only way to make them last longer is to make them harder..

Well.. also 2D platformers are boring if they are too easy..

Thats the way games should be played and made.
I miss those days when I lost my mind for 1 level in Super Mario Bros 3.

Because they were short as hell. If they weren't hard you'd be able to blow through the game in literally10 minutes. Its been done.

The aesthetics of game design had not been refined in those early days (sometimes for the better, as it was less likely to get two games that play exactly alike). One of the downsides is that the games were less fair. Todays games are designed with the average person in mind and you are expected to beat them. Older games could give a crap how far you made it.

BTW if you're having trouble with DKC i don't know what to tell you... buy Kid Icarus or Contra 3 and get back to me.

Exactly. Older games, in the 80s etc, were all pretty much hardcore. But when games started getting casual then the difficulty went down. Casuals dont want to sit down and die for an hour on the same level.
