[QUOTE="Riverwolf007"]Because they thought of it first?
trakem
I don't think Microsoft is the first ever to think of charging for things that are normaly free.
Well no kidding since I have a bottled water in front of me but I'm mainly thinking if Sony could have beat them to this and charged and made a pile of money from it we all know they would have done it.MS hires people to work on LIVE. MS gets all the content for LIVE. MS keeps the servers up and running with updates ever so often. Therefore, MS should get paid for their work.
I think SONY is great for offering an online service for free. Thats great. But does SONY have the right to charge for online? Sure..BUT..Its not going to go over as well, since its been free for years now. So that would be more wrong in my eyes then MS charging for LIVE. jmho

oh please dont tell me you actually believe that
I'm aware that Sony's products are expensive, but they don't try to rip you off every chance they get
Because Xbox Live is a much better service. You get what you pay for.Englando_IV
Just so you know, you're not paying for full features or anything, you're paying for online gaming and getting content on the MarketPlace 1 week earlier. Congrats on getting ripped off. You bought into all of M$'s BS

Exactly, there's a difference between ripping off and trying to sell a product. All companies try to sell a product. However, some even go as far to rip their own customers off. The PS3 is the price of crappy Blu-Ray players out now, except it's the best at Blu-Ray, and can also play games, and other multimedia functions. Don't forget Sony's keeping the price as low as possible while loosing money. Live Gold is a rip off. Paying for online is the stupidest thing ever. I laughed when M$ tried bringing it to PC too
Hey everybody I don't pay for free stuff, except electricity and water and heat and petrolium products and metals and minerals and plants and animals that I eat. Nope I don't pay for anything that can be found elsewhere for free!!!
Lol, you guys seriously crack me up what with not understanding how the entire world works.
Seriously folks anyone here that pays a sewer charge technically pays to go to the bathroom. How can any group of people be this disconnected from reality?
It should be free. All those useless functions can be removed for all I care.redneckdouglas
Those useless functions are free to Silver users though. Gold users get to access online gaming, which is free for any other platform.
Apparantly 360 is better for online play, everyone has headsets so you can trash talk all you like and hear others doing as much so too. Yep better service. 360 owners really got to stop making excuses and force Microsoft to make XBL free or alteast reduce the price becasue I don't think it's justified. PSN is just as great for online play and I experience no lag what so ever, the service is also getting better with FW updates every month or 2 while XBL gets it like once a year. PSN is catching up if not already there so saying XBL is much better doesn't hold ground anymore. Swift_Boss_A
See, you don't know what you are missing, and it's not the trash talk. You use the voice communication to talk to your teammates. I couldn't imagine playing Gears, Halo 3, ET:QW, CoD4, or BF:BC without coordinating strategies with my teammates.

sony loves us all.
This thread make my want to smash my head against my desk,
When PS3 came out with insane launch pricing for their console all I heard from Cow-Nation was "We are all rich and will pay for quality"
But when it comes to online play, Cows seem to have an issue wrapping their head around the same arguement. Live is better, just for what I save a month in long distance to England and Australlia chatting with friends on cross game chats it pays for itself and even if it didn't offer that the cross game invites make it worth while.
The most tragic part is that around these parts you can get a 13 month live card which is normally on sale at one of the big box stores for 49.99,
49.99 / 13 months = $3.84 per month
Sony charges me 200 bucks more then anyone else at launch for their console and we are sitting here arguing about 3.84 a month?
WOW.

It's amazing that you believe that. You actually believe Sony doesn't look at their customers as dollar bills? How much does it cost to live in that fantasy land you reside in? I'd really like to live in a place where a business doesn't look at their customers as primarily sources of profit.[QUOTE="AndYOU"][QUOTE="heretrix"][QUOTE="AndYOU"]Because Sony actually cares about the people who buy their products, and don't look at them as dollar billsheretrix

true true..What about the server side matchmaking and player data that Microsoft maintains? Someone has to pay for that.
For example, in Halo 3 you're always paired with people who have the best connection speed with you, are close to your level, are part of a party you've formed, or have played previous games with. That's not a P2P service. I'm not saying that alone is worth $50, but Microsoft isn't charging $50 for a entirely P2P network.
Does the PS3 have anything like that? Or is it like PC gaming where you're simply connected to a game and then you play? Honest question, don't own a PS3.
Because Sony actually cares about the people who buy their products, and don't look at them as dollar billsAndYOU
I almost fell off my chair when I read this,
So last generation when I had to pay 429CDN for the PS2 console, and then 59.99 for a memory card, then 49.99 for a four controller adapter that Nintendo had included in its consoles since N64, and then 59.99 for a network adapter, then my favorite paying 149.99 for Final Fantasy w/ the Hard Drive that I couldn't save games to other then the final fantasy it came with and a few 2K sports games.
This was an example of Sony caring about me?
All of the big three would grind you up and use the powder in their consoles if it saved them money, they are not your friends, they don't like you, they will never like you, and all you are or will ever be is a combination of thousands of other people as a line item on an income statement.

Those useless functions are free to Silver users though. Gold users get to access online gaming, which is free for any other platform.
If there weren't Gold members, many of the functions would not exist or would be poorer....just like....ummmmm...PSN.
In effect, the Gold members are subsidizing the Silver members. It is simply a pricing strategy.
MS could attempt to charge 1/2 as much, but for everyone....except they realize that many people (Silver members) aren't likely to pay anything...at least at first. So instead, they make as much as possible 'free' so that as many people as possible will use the service. And then they try to convert as many of those as possible to Gold, since on-line play is the real carrot. people will pay for on-line gaming. They won't pay for demos etc. So, first you need people to consider on-line at all....hence Silver....then you get some of them to pay for the actual gaming. That is MS strategy...and believe me Sony and Ninetendo are jealous they didn't launch that first.
Effectively there is no 'free' anything for Live. It is just being subsidized by the Gold members. Just like PSN will not remain 'free'. Ultimately it will be subsidized by advertisers or whatever strategy Sony comes up with to pay some of the bills. Ain't nothing free in life...it's just how you decide to price.

I'm not Canadian, and PS products are more reliable anyway, so I'm willing to pay more
