Because it failed to capture what made Diablo 1 and 2 such long standing games. Diablo 3 has a **** community, going to a forum is not a replacement for the old chat rooms. Auction House killed the fun of going to find people to trade with, getting those rare exceptional deals where you have something someone wants so badly, he'll give you an "arm and a leg" for it. Now everything is done with clicks and is boring as sin. I didn't like not being able to zip between acts and bosses at will. I found the story was handled criminally. I am all for remale empowerment in video games but making Diablo with B!TCH T!TS was the most ludicrous thing in the story. I can't believe a bunch of developers/writers sat around discussing ideas and that was the one they chose.
I found the stats uninteresting and very little substance in the way of stat mechanics. No longer was there stats to tinker and toy with (piercing, crushing blows, etc etc). I didn't like that everyone was the same as me, no custom stats or a skill tree of some kind. Who cares if you screw up, didn't stop previous Diablos from being fun and popular FOR A DECADE. To this day, even now, I find DIablo 2 more addicting and enticing than Diablo 3. This should not have been "Diablo 3" this should have simply been "Diablo" and remade the Diablo franchise.
Most importantly the game lacked atmosphere that made Diablo a creepy game.
Because the combat cannot even compete with RuneScape's (which now has an action bar and a much deeper system at play). Most enemies can be dispelled by spamming the same standard attack and then unleashing a special. It is not very engaging. There is little variation in the classes and the different attacks (but there are a lot to make it seem like there is). Play RuneScape 2012 instead. It is much more intricate game. Also, the interface seems as though it is from the 1990s. Top down view, click to move, and recycled dungeons. It's just an awful game. Why not just play RuneScape 2012? It is free, any PC can run it, it's better, there are more people, a more mature community, so much more to do, PvP with actual consequences, and so much more. Man, Diablo is such a bad game it actually sucks. :) lolDrasonak
cute, an advertisement from 1996!
Cut and paste levels, boring levels, nothing epic, cheap kills, crap loot all the time, constant nerfing and buffing, lag, Chinese e-mail scamers, repetitive, boring boss fights, over promised and under delivered, years of waiting for a crap game, multi billion dollar dev dropping the ball, so.... many.... things.
If they would have held true to the videos and other promises we were first given. Game would have been much better. As it stands now... It just shows how lazy they were.
Because its a terrible game.
and its balanced around the RMAH.
granted i havent played in months, but that was what made me quit, And yes, i had inferno on easy farm status... so its not because im terrible or whatever.
What killed it for me was the awful loot system which pretty much catered for the RMAH, the effort to reward ratio just wasn't worth the time for example by the time I stopped playing i was in act 3 inferno and I had never dropped a legendary or set item it just felt like I was grinding gold for upgrades which was frankly boring.
There's others things like boring character building/specs been a generally downgrade from Diablo 2 as well, the whole game is just MEH.
I really enjoy it. The Wizard is one of the best classes in any RPG I've played, mechanically speaking.
Inconsistancy
- RMAH
- "Difficulty" setting is cheap, just makes the game tedious not hard. (eliet mobs are just worthless tedium, and non special things die in 1 hit)
- No interesting weapons/items, all utility and nothing else
- Spec varity doesn't really exist, specs are Viable:Non-viable not the promised Optimal:Sub-optimal
- Story is ABYSMAL
- RMAH
- Random level generation isn't good at being random, key locations 'always' spawning in the same location/direction
- Mediocre animations (minor issue, clearly)
- Did I say RMAH?
- RMAH.
What i heard is they killed off or servely nerfed boss runs then PVP is probably the biggest one people cry about
Anyone saying tedious with Diablo 3 don't know what they are talking about its a hack n slash loot drop game ... the whole thing is tedious ... thats what we like
The challange of doing it all over again in a harder setting is again what we all like
I never played D3 but i been reading youtube comments n this is what i been hearing about
I played way more then enough of D2 n read up on D3 ... there gonna make a console game is what i keep hearing
The great thing about diablo is once a new patch hits it greatly changes who you make your character ... it all about boss runs loot drops n stat points
I have the game, I've played it. I've also played 1 and 2. I don't think 3 is as good as the second one, but I don't think it's bad AT ALL. My only complaint with it is the always online thing, I can't for the life of me understand why people despise this game like Blizzard drove by their house and shot their dog. Can someone please explain this blatant across the board hate to me? Sali217
Diablo 3 is worst than Diablo 2 in every way, more casual, terrible new art in lollypop land, online only garbage etc
For me, Diablo series stopped with Diablo 2, Diablo 3 is an abomination that would be best as non existent
Also if all single player games start asking for an always online connection to the internet, you only have the horrible ideas of Blizzard to blame, they have essentially put the corner stone of destroying gaming completly

Don't worry, you can always play Diablo 2 &3 on your 360, and MS will never allow Blizzard to ask for a constant internet connection on there. Because as you said:

Human-after-all
This says it quite well. Just another casualised series to appeal to the masses with very little depth or long term appeal. Still it did have great production values...as if that really matters.

Admit it, you just suck at the game, I can do inferno mp10 and it is not tedious and horrible, noob.Basically because everything past the second difficulty is tedious and horrible.

Also high expectations. I mean, people have been waiting 12 years, if it isn't better then just "pretty good", then it is kind of a disappointment.

Also, because it should be called Auction House 3
Diablo 3
One of the worst stories I have ever seen
Terrible writing
Magic Find and Gold Find become useless
Lack of Variety
No permanent choices for your character
Combat, while improved over previous games, still leaves a LOT to be desired
RMAH
Random Level generation is poorly done here
No Custom games lobby
No Ladder
NV Buffs needed to farm efficiently
WoWification
Unsuitable artstyle
And the biggest issue:
Uninspiring itemization (stack str/int/dex, vit, resists and armor)
Why are there shooters with far mroe entertaining loot than a game which is base on loot?
It proved Blizzard is human and not the Gods we thought they were. It's way to obvious the game was made around a real money auction house where the focus is too make money rather then a game made around fun.
Plus I quit playing like 6 months ago and still no pvp? So even when PVP finally gets released, I'd need to pretty much start from scratch to be able to compete, even though when I quit my gear was God tier.
And the difficulty balance is GARBAGE. Game was WAY to easy on the first playthrough, the WHOLE friggen playthroughs, then Inferno was a brick wall after the rest of the game was WAY too easy. They messed up BIG time on the difficulty scaling.
It was terrible... for pretty much all the reasons already summed up in this thread. I agree with haloinventedfps list.
Finished normal mode, got to the second act with the next difficulty. Was boring as sh*t, and the story and villains were just abysmal
RoccoHout
Yeah same here, I got bored on my second playthrough and haven't played it ever since.
Meanwhile I'm playing Torchlight 2 for the third time already.
I liked the game. It's no where near as good as D2, but it may get better with expansions. Lots of people didn't like the original D2 either. I wasn't one of them. I liked it out of the box.
The only real complaint I have is the always on internet for single player.
That and Torchlight 2 is many times better, but that's not really a complaint.
It was a bad game.
It sold on nostalgia and good expectations, gamers were let down but Blizzard kept the money.
PC Gaming is dead for big titles.
Diablo III doesn't deserve to be compared to Diablo II. The good ol days are in the past. DIII is a reflection where game development has gone and noone is forcing you to have anything to do with Blizzard or Diablo for that matter.

for me the game was just far too easy until inferno, then it became cheap.
enjoyed the first play through, continued playing so I could get to the last difficulty for farming fun. didnt get that. no point in carrying on.
edit: also blizzard were nerfing some classes abilitys... in a single player game, i dont understand the point in that, i remember reading about some mortal kombat developers who were pleased when players found innovative uses of mechanics to do things that werent envisioned, nowadays if you do something like that it gets immediately nerfed, which is fine in 'competitive' games, but in single player?
Repetitive (nature of the genre)
Loot is based around the RMAH
I personally like the game, but I can see why people don't.

Armoured_Mage
It's not a single player game...and who says cooperative games can't be competitive?
i will explain why i gave up on it, i bought it day 1, i started leveling a demon hunter, i was finishing the game and changing difficulties, got stuck in inferno act 1 ,then with expiramentation i found out a cool combo the ss combo, after 2-3 weeks they nerfed it to the ground , while i was still good with a same build then they nerfed the ias and made my whole gear bad,and then they nerfed another thing i dont remember what,
while the first nerf happened i also raised a wizard , guess what ? nerfed too to the ground.
all those nerfs for what? because people were clearing content too fast and they couldnt come up with an answer, they did in the end with the extra lvls but noone cared at this point ,when u play sth and your character feels badass and then the next day u are crooked and not having fun anymore u leave, its a fact that diablo 3 lost alot of people with the ias nerf, and the game was not the same anymore.
the betas didnt help out find the overpowered stuff? why bother nerf some expiraments people made,
also items, the green items were awful , u didnt want any green or orange items in your slots cause yellow were better....
long story short the nerfs destroied the reputation of this game, most people then moved to guild wars 2 ,and left that after 3 weeks too, most of them went to wow ,back to wow and left that too after 2-3 weeks and still look for a good online game to play... i turned to league of legends,it keeps my pc gaming.
What killed it for me was the DRM. Having to be online and dealing with overwhelming amounts of lag just to play a single-player game. Was so pissed, I uninstalled it and have not touched it since.
Manipulative game design. Think, if the game didn't have addictive mechanics (namely randomized loot), who would find it enjoyable? The only reason why people sit and play through a game with dated presentation, repetitive gameplay, and a horrid story is because they want that next piece of good loot (despite the fact that it has no guarantee of dropping). Loot drops alone can't make a game worthwhile.
In what way are online games not real? Do they have rules? Do they have some sort of goal, even an immediate or temporary one? Can you still play them? If so, then they're real games.I said xbox has all PC games, not all PC abomination and garbage, like Diablo 3 and MMOs

Also, dear GameSpot: fix your code that deletes nested quotes. Parsing a hierarchy of nodes isn't exactly a novel concept. No excuses at this point.
In gaming forums, everyone hates everything.mirgamer
Well while this is true, I had my own personal gripes with the game that made me regret my purchase.
As many have mentioned, it lacked many features from Diablo 2 in favor of a more streamlined experience that I found rather odd. No stat management? No individual skill point disbursement? Odd.
My character was the exact same as the character standing next to me at any given level, if we were the same class, with the exception of gear equipped. It made me feel like a head in the crowd, instead of an individual shaping his or her character to a fulfill a certain niche (reminiscent of the ten thousand builds a Paladin could occupy in Diablo 2).
I missed the ability to zip through levels and grinId bosses for loot. An odd complaint, but valid all the same. Half the fun of Diablo 2 was grinding for loot because "that certain something" compelled you to do one more run. Because it could be "The Run" after all.
The addition of the auction house, while I have no complaints with it as far as money and convienience goes, hindered player interaction. I loved going into games in Diablo 2 that were purely trade oriented and trying to bargain for certain items I craved, or making some poor soul overpay for an item he or she desperately needed. The RMAH is really not a big deal to me, I didn't use it so it didn't effect me. People who pretend item buying didn't occur in Diablo 2 are lolworthy, it happened all the time (See d2jsp forums, what a joke). Blizzard just got a cut of the action this time, which I see no issue with.
Despite the above, I did enjoy the game for several hours, but I couldn't even push myself to finish Act 4 on the first playthrough. It just felt so monotonous this time around. For comparisons sake I created a Summon Necromancer on Diablo 2 shortly after uninstalling D3, and it was a blast. I do prefer the visuals of D3 to D2 I might add. The colors and art style really suited the franchise. Atmosphere? Creepy? People who get enjoyment from that sort of stuff from older Diablo titles to me are rather peculiar, but they hold no weight for me.
Overall, my above complaints were the deal breaker for me. I felt D3 was a step back in major areas while a progressive step in the minor ones.
Because I played D2 for 9 years being one of the richest people in Europe (Had a Bulgarian friend who had spent THOUSANDS of USD on the game donate me all his stuff when he retired around '05-06) and lots of good trades and investments.. Never got hacked a SINGLE time.
Played D3 for 3 months and I got hacked. Lost all my gold and items. No way am I starting from 0 lol.
