Because it has an excellent video game storyline, in that it moves you directly into the action with only a brief cutscene, and moves you through the story rapidly, without too much expostion. It is very atmospheric, graphics, sound, setting and the atmosphere shifts subtely as you move through the different areas. It has great bosses (although the final boss was dissapointing in my opinion) and great set pieces. Escorting Ashley helps expand on the game mechanics, you now have a completely helpless person to defend who you have to share your resources with, meaning you have to play the game differently to how you did when you were alone, which prevents the game from getting boring. It has a few simple puzzles that make you think a little, but aren't so taxing that you get stuck. There is a nice choice of weapons, different paths in weapon choice effect how you play the game, and all the weapons are very different in how they can be used. It also encourages replayability by way of unlockables.
Overall it is an excellent game, with only a very few negatives.
Oh and it has chainsaws and exploding heads!
