You could always say Elder Scrolls: Arena and Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall were the first games with massive open-world sandbox gameplay.

Because Driver is nothing like GTA maybe? In Driver can you walk around the city, find whatever car you fancy, steal it, run everyone over, the police arrive, you shoot them, then you blow up a police helicopter, a police chase ensues, you kill some more people, snipe a few heads off, climb onto a building and rocket launcher the cops then die. No you could drive around. It was like the city was just a big twisted race map in Driver, I'm not saying it was bad but it did nothing for sandbox games.

in Driver 2 you could run around and steal cars. the only thing you really couldnt do was shoot, but the game was called Driver for a reason. it also did this on ps1 hardware where as the GTAs on ps1 hardware looked terrible.

Because Driver never popularized the elements like GTAIII did. The same thing goes with Wolfenstein and other games that get overshadowed by the successors who make the game elements popular instead of being the actual ones to debut them.

It also doesn't help that a lot of people have never played the two Driver games.

It's what happens with two games that are similar. The better game will get all of the credit. Driver got progressively worse while GTA got progressively better. I'm fine with that.

If you think back. The original Zelda created the genre.

Alot of GTAIII's mission were ripped verbatim from Driver and Driver 2.

driver only had driving missions, they were in a fixed order, the cities werent exactly interesting and there wasnt much to do in them. there was no shooting involved. getting cars in driver 2 was so wierd and stupid. but they were great games and i loved them, just GTA was on another level.

No, it wasn't Grand Theft Auto III or Driver. I remember hearing about it on GameTrailers. It was some game on Nintendo 64 that was created by RockStar. The name escapes me at the moment, but GameTrailers said it was the fifth most revolutionary game of all time. Super Mario Brothers was sixth. Yes, I know... Pong was number one.

I played all of these games and I don't see how. You could say that Driver ripped Bullit if you like, and at least most of gta was original.
