Every time doom 3 is brought up the the response is "oh it's shit". It's too dark. And monsters just out at you in every room.
Then, you praise this.

Who hates on Doom 3?
It wasn't even that good of a game, just a graphics king / tech demo with decent gameplay.
or maybe people like both, of course for someone as dumb as tc you can only choose one and it must be doom 3 because it is for teh hardcore gamerzzzzzz
Doom 3 was okay. A shit load better than crysis 3 that's for sure.
I found Crysis 3 okay also once I turned off its training wheels and the screen uncluttered. It wasn't the corridor or linear path that was bugging me. But, rather all the extra junk onscreen.
Expectations for Doom 3 were far greater then Dead Space. Doom 3 was hyped to be one of the greatest games of the decade, but it simply turned out to be a great tech demo with so-so shooting.
Because Doom 3 is the epitome of the PC shooter and the kinds of gamers associated with PC gaming. It was the kind of game that boasted revolutionary graphics and was incredibly bland and boring.
I'm not one of the bashers but I didn't get to play it at the time. I revisited it thanks to buying a doom collection on steam and it's not aged well. I can still happily play the originals but 3 is a game I could never warm to. Can't quite explain why.
doom 3 was an excellent shooter back in 2004. They dared to actually bring some sci-fi story in explaining what the creatures were. Kept good atmosphere, had plenty of varieties and different baddies. Lots of side rooms and hidden codes. It does have quite a few similarities with Dead Space and I love both games.. Monster closets to scare you and good weaponry. 100x better than RAGE.

am i the only one who liked rage? :(
I got that game right now,
and will always own it based carmack be praised.
honestly the game bests others (graphically, stylistically) in my opinion,
I still think its the graphics king, and other games need to employ hard lighting,
It gives game a noir-ish aesthetic.
and for people with pc's,
download the dark mod. http://forums.thedarkmod.com/topic/15105-torrent-for-20/
pretty banging
It came out almost 10 years ago, it was pretty good back then, these days it's not held up too well.
When it comes to a possible Doom 4, I think more people are probably more cynical about id Software's abilities after games like Rage, and possibly due to their close relationship with Raven Software who botched the last Wolfenstein game, as well as a pretty unremarkable Quake 4.
dumb design..the whole design was just to be so dark that you can't see shit..just because they want to force you to use torchlight..do you know how dumb it is that in their realm with all that tech..there's no torch mounted guns or light mounted helmet? :P Average game.
I liked it. It was scarier than anything else out there at the time...
yeah, I remember when I was living with my parents at the time I'd play it in the dark with headphones on, my mom would sneak up behind me and tap me on the shoulder and freak me out

If I see something in the dark heading my way with a light, guess what will I shoot first? Tech or no tech, I'll aim at that light. The flashlight as it was is fine. Besides, there are tons of flashlight mods if you want to go that route.
The dark is fine.
Most people who were upset by Doom 3 were upset because it wasn't like the other games. They took a shooter series and turned it into a horror game. Your constant need to bash a 6 year old game is admirable though, keep up the Dead Space hate.
Pretty sure the majority of gamers across the internet bash Doom 3.
It's not that the game is bad, it's actually decent and has great graphics for the time. It was more about how far the game strayed from the original formula. Everybody was expecting hordes of enemies and a relentless pace just like Doom II. Instead they got some survival/horror FPS basically taking a 180 on everything that made Doom 1 and 2 so loved.

The criticisms I saw, and those are from a decade ago, were about how the game looked good but the gameplay was stuck in the past.
It had some pretty tough competition with Far Cry and Half Life 2 and those games were just way better.

Solely to piss you off TC.

I always hear a mix of where the hate stems from. I've come to the conclusion that people didn't necessarily find Doom 3 to be a bad game but it was just a bad Doom game not worthy of the title.
I've played Doom 3 and I never thought it was a bad game, but you could tell the emphasis was put on the technical side of the game rather than with it's gameplay. It's a case of graphics guiding gameplay which isn't really the best design.
Uhm. Who hates Doom 3 ?
Ive heard nothing but good things about this game, even FEAR gets more hate than Doom 3.
Come On System Whores !
it truly isn't that great of a game. you probably don't see much hate about it on here because there really isn't much of a retro community here any more.
I actually had it day one (still have my original copy) and enjoyed it for what it was... but it definitely wasn't a doom game. hell, I keep seeing people throw the term "old school FPS around", but Doom 3 was pretty linear made primarily of skinny corridors. It was very different from the other titles in the series. It's not a problem if it's not exactly like the other titles - though the fanboy in me cries - but at least make sure the process isn't rinse and repeat (flash light tag). Not to mention the horribly balanced (overpowered) end game weaponry.
the flashlight concept (keeping the mods out of discussion) was a very artificial way to add tension/intensity to the gameplay. the lighting is truly dumb too - areas where there are clearly lights in the ceiling or on the walls that are bright, but surround areas that are dark for some reason.
it's actually been downhill for id since Q3A. Hell, I'm surprised you haven't made a doom 3 thread on "how it isn't truly an old school FPS" or "how it has a fake open world".
Back in 2004, I wasn't too fond of Doom 3 which is why I haven't finished it up to now. But, after seeing the current crop of FPS games become more and more uh, "glitzy," that old game is starting to look good to me because of its simplistic approach.
Because it was like a very bad survival horror game that only did the themes and atmosphere well and sucked balls as a FPS for the most part.
It was? On Nightmare (i.e. not easy as ****) resources are incredibly limited and the player dies near enough 1 hit. Please explain how mechanically it is a bad "survival horror" my friend, because I don't agree. I would go as far to say you are wrong as **** on the matter.
