What makes the xbox 360(MS) fail so much in japan?

I was watching some dev diarys about the ps3 and alot of japanese developers are sony bias.

SEGA wow ( valkyria chronicles )

Hideo kojima ( METALGEARSOLID )

Team CSI ( yakuza series )

Cyberconnect 9 ( naruto fighting franchise)

FromSoftware ( Demon's soul, 3D dot hero )

----------------------

My idea is Sony owns the majority of the market share ( when talking about HD gaming ).

What are your thoughs/reasons why you thing the xbox can't be successful in the east?

Microsoft's launch, that's why.

Japanese people like party games, board/palor games (ie Mahjong), RPGs (ie Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest), fighting and action adventure.

When MS launched the 360, it launched with pretty much ALL American-flavored games, so of course it would fail. Microsoft tried to rectify the situation with Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata but it was too late and not enough.

If Microsoft launched with big name RPGs (possibly getting Blue Dragon out for launch), party games and a few other Japanese type games it could've possibly been at about 5 million sales in Japan now.

Microsoft wanted the Japanese taste to change to Americans taste, and not the other way around.

Japanese people love iPods and McDonalds, because Apple and McDonalds changed their ways to fit Japanese lifestyle (ie Japanese music, teriyaki burgers, etc. etc.)

Microsoft launched with Perfect Dark Zero, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Kameo and hoped the Japanese would buy it. It was doomed from the start.

I'd have to disagree, I won't buy an American car due to the fact they don't keep there value. But thats the care industry i guess its a whole different ball park.

Oh yes, i listed multiplatform developers but the majority of there games are Sony exclusive. Fromsoftware made a 360 game and wii game. Cyber connect has made a wii,ps3 and is currently making Ultimate ninja storm 2 which is on 360,ps3.

Hideo kojima, has yet to develop for any other console then a Sony console in the last 15 years. Twin snakes being the only exception.

What i don't get is "Brand loyalty". I buy what appeals to me, i don't say "oh this game is multiplatform im not buying it". 99% of the 360,ps3 libary is pretty much the same, ps3 having more FPS ( exclusive) then the 360. Also, 360 has more RPG the genre the eastern people like so whats the problem? Is it really just BAND WAGON?

Yes I agree. Just look at the controller for example. The 360 controller is bigger than the PS controller because the americans is bigger than the asians.

It's not that simple.

The iPod is huge in Japan. So are certain other products and companies. Kentucky Fried Chicken is more popular there than it is here.

The reason it's sone so poorly in Japan is because MS did nothing to cater to the Japanese market at launch. And once they figured out what they needed to do, it was too little too late.

That's not the reason. Sony would do the same (don't forget we've seen glitches in the PS2 era), and they'd still gobble it up.

Perhaps so.

Most Japanese grew up with Sony. There's no doubt that they've left their mark in Japan.

It really is just cultural differences, it's hard to understand it unless you are studying it, or are living there right now.

Racial loyalty is a lot stronger among Japanese than Caucasians. Japanese will almost never buy anything non-japanese which tries to immitate a japanese product. Game consoles were a japanese creation by origin. The Xbox is merely an american version of something originally japanese which is trying to capitalize on the japanese market. I can see why many japanese won't support the xbox.

Cars were invented by the west. Japanese created their own versions of it. American's still buy japanese cars. Hence, not at the same level.

And many non-japanese products and companies are incredibly successful in Japan.

The xbox could have been huge in japan. Microsoft just didn't release the right games for it.

Well, the first commercially 'successful' game console was Atari. You judge an industry by the ones who set a standard for it, not by who invented the first working prototype without commercial success. Just like electronics, like any other technology in this world, were mostly invented by the West. But the japanese set the standard for electronics nowadays, and became a japanese dominated industry. In general, japanese have more faith in japanese electronics than American. The 360's RROD is a testiment to the fact that American's are just not as good at it.....

And i didn't say that non-japanese products won't be successful in japan. It really depends on whether the product has a strong japanese competition or not, and whether the japanese were the pioneers of that product.

I don't think the Japanese have a grudge against the Americans for that. To tell you the truth, the amount of people which died due to the Japanese WWII atrocities mounted to maybe 10x more than what the Atomic Bomb inflicted on them. If anything, the world had more reason to have a grudge against the japanese. During WWII in Asia, the japanese will decapitate or shoot anyone just for not liking their face. Almost the whole asian continent felt the wrath of the japanese.

And as much as i hate saying this, and i'm sure even the japanese back then knew it, but they really really had it coming (the atom bomb thing).

Unfortunately.

As far as the 360 in Japan goes, it has nothing to do with Microsoft being an American company (or has very little to do with it) It's all about the games that the Japanese like that the 360 didn't/doesn't have.

Microsoft was busy trying to solidify their existence in NA/Europe, which they have, then they tried to gain Japanese support, but an opinion was already made about the 360 there, and it is very very hard to change someone's opinion about a gamin console, which is evident here in SW.

Exactly! With games like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey the Japanese didn't want the 360. Instead they prefered the PS3 with great Japanese games like Resistance and Uncharted.

The 360 per se doesent fail much.

Its the games, look at the western styled games on the PS3 like Uncharted 1 and 2, Killzone 2 and the likes, they probably bombed in Japan in sales.

This... You guys should stop pissing on about the nuke. So they dropped it, how many more Americans would have to die to get Japan to surender? 50.000? 60.000? 100.000?

Ask yourself this: You can either send 100.000 of your countries young men to die on a godforsaken island in the pacific, or you can drop a bomb on them that would end the war and spare the life of those soldiers.
If i had the choice i'd rather drop something as horrible as a nuclear weapon then send my countrymen to die...
