I came in expecting an awesome soundtrack, and instead all I got was kingdom hearts.
Talk about epic disappointment.

I CAN HELP!
I would be quite pleased of JRPGs managed to purge this kind of music.
Also, this is the apex of JRPG music IMO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7wJ8pE2qKU
That's a good song, but why in Nomura's name would you pick the live version? If you want good KH music, listen to this.

Eeww, I always love live raw > recorded autotune bs nowadays. Okay I am just live performance-biased person. Indeedz I dont even like the Leona Lewis FF13 theme for the ads, disappoint. I loved this song back in the day, but hated KH bummer, yeah if anybody says otherwise I will without a doubt hunt you down.
i would take (Tales of Graces OP) over that song any dayfunsohng
Love that theme to death.
I hate KHs vocal tracks, but I love its compositions.
Yoko Shimomura did a fantastic job.
[QUOTE="funsohng"]IMO, english songs just doesnt work in JRPGs i would take this (Tales of Graces OP) over that song any day or this (Persona 4) EDIT: oh yeah... P4's song is in english. eh, that's an exception.KH-mixerX
This song beats both of those in my opinion.
eh, i generally don't like FF vocal theme other than the this one which they had for FFVI DS in fact, i think this beats the songs i listed lolSongs like that? Meh not a big deal (and personally I am not a big fan of the english version of both KH and KHII song). I care for the actual music in the game, and many JRPG these days have great soundtracks.

Birth by Sleep's music is just awesome. It the best soundtrack in the series IMO, and if the soundtrack comes out I would so get it!:D

I like Passion, but as I said I am not a big fan of the english version. Simple and Clean and Sanctuary are not bad through, I mean I don't mind listening to them.
The KH theme song is better that all that leona lewis garbage. At times it feels like they made that music for 12 year old girls.
Good lord, now that is great stuff. The second one split me in two. They've done a magnificent job translating the opening bit to FFVII into a full orchestra. Really brought me back...Awesome

LegatoSkyheart
Anyway Im pretty sure Ys still holds the JRPG music crown as its OSTs AND concerts are still very popular, in Japan atleast.
Great tracks.
Vacant Interference
Valestien Castle (The single most popular track in the entire series)
Scars of the Divine Wing
Ice Ridge of Noltia
Illburn Ruins

It works when you listen to a Live Orcestra Playing it! Now THAT was a master piece! it was truly a shame that they didn't play some of the most obvious songs (Terra's Theme & Melodies of Life are one of them).
No one has linked this.
Darklink25
almost did actually.
Mystic Quest is Epic! They should make a sequel.
FFIV - Prologue
FFV - The Dawn Warriors
FFVI - Terra's theme
FFVII - Judgement Day
FFVIII - Don't be afraid
FFIX - battle 1
FFX - Jecht battle
FFIV-X had amazing music (XIII I don't know, still going through the game :P) and above are some examples, but for non-FF JRPG music:
Chrono Trigger - Magus Battle
Golden Sun - Venus Lighthouse
Star Ocean 2 - Mighty Blow
Tales of Vesperia - The Final Showdown
Tales of Legendia - Legendary Sorcerer
Lufia II - Sinistral Battle
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance - Burning Ambition
I would post more, but I'm started to get exhausted of putting all these links up, and it's late. V_V

GOLDEN SUN! AHHHHHH!
how could I forget! :(
Gah, a J-Pop artist? That was terrible imo, along with most of the J-Pop linked in this thread :?
I like some of Utada's stuff (it's restricted mostly to her Japanese album "Ultra Blue") ..but she should really stick to singing in Japanese imo...far better than her English stuff. I also think she gives pretty poor live performances.
Tbh, I really haven't heard any decent J-Pop in games, outside maybe some of Kanako Ito's stuff.. (that is if you can even call visual novels like Steins;Gate "games." There generally isn't much gameplay to VNs.) Most of what I consider "good J-Pop" probably wouldn't fit into games very well..(what little I actually like in the genre is generally slower.)
On the topic of game music..while it isn't quite J-Pop, I'd love to see some of Shikata Akiko's stuff in more mainstream games (she did some opening music for Umineko.) Her style would fit well with JRPGs, I think.
Anyway, just for the record..this is what I think of when I think "good J-Pop":
KOKIA - 「白い雪」
熊木杏里 - 「風の記憶」
Spontania/JUJU - 「君のすべてに」 (okay, pretty R&B/hip-hopish, but meh. I consider this track pop.)
Again, not exactly game material..
Flame away, Utada fans >_>;

nice i like JUJU (Itou Kanako... not so sure. her songs are good, but i dont find them exceptional) best J-POP songs IMO are from Nakashima Mika or Mizuki Nana[QUOTE="KH-mixerX"][QUOTE="Brownesque"] As in: that song is pop music tripe.Brownesque

Yeah, JUJU is great.
The biggest problem I have with Itou Kanako's stuff is how insanely fake the instruments in the background generally sound. I honestly have no problem with electronic music (hell my current fancy is DnB) or even vocal synthesization if done correctly, but the instrumentation in her songs generally just sounds really flat, generic, and overall bad. Her vocals, on the other hand, are quite good..and at least her stuff is pretty varied (at the other end of the spectrum you have tracks like "A Wish For The Stars", for example.)
I'm not familiar with those two artists though, I'll have to check them out later.
