New Scans

Anyways, I thought i might explain..atleast IMO why Halo is a popular shooter...so here it goes.

Halo made Shooters on console's WORK.....Plain and simple. The dual anologs placed in a perfect position to take proper control of a FPS like Halo, Halo also simplified shooters for a more FUN experience, Throwing grenades with a touch of the left trigger and shooting with the right, just made it feel natural, Instead of your usal scrolling to find your grenades etc etc....it also has a great mascot..the MC, like Samus behind a armour..puts you in a middle of a war and behind the visor of a super soldier...easy to enjoy and relate too...just plain COOL.

Lets Not forget the warthog...worked great for multiplayer/co-op..for its time. IMO, it had alot to do with the timing of its release and the visual look compared to anything at the time...it just looks great and was simply FUN........mix that with a great and deep story of an alien race. You got a HIT!

Halo just did everything in its OWN way....and it did it right.

Thoughts?

I don't know about you, but I don't relate to a 7 ft. super soldier

But, yeah, the game reaches out to that trigger-happy, grunting, hoo-rah yelling, commando audience. And me :)

I completely agree with the TC. I find Halo just fun to play, everything just flows well together. It's no Unreal tournament or Half-life but if I want to lose a couple of hours, Halo is a fun way of doing it.

Halo vastly expanded on what Goldeneye had proved a console FPS should be. The campaine experience offered was easily of epic proportions. With absolulely huge environments, multiple pathways to go, vehicles and weapons that made you feel like you were at war, and action put on screen that no other game had come close to at the time. Not to forget this was all possible with co-op. The visuals were of the best ever seen as well (just look at the last level in the game, it almost holds up to today's standards). Then we move to multiplayer, also blowing away anything before it. up to 16 players connected through 4 Xboxes, tournaments anyone? The multiplayer options were so vast and customizable as well, they weren't just presets anymore.

When Halo was released, it was absolutely top of the chain, and not many contested against it (other than fanboys). Every person with an Xbox at that time was in absolute heaven.

What gave Halo a bad reputation was Halo 2. Criticized for barely being an update, worse single player, and multiplayer similar to what was already out on the market. Meaning Halo had lost most of what made it unique in the first place.

Now Halo 3 is coming, promising a healthy blend between the awesome Single single player (4 player co-op!), and a healthy dose of multiplayer. We'll see if it actually lives up to its name.

right place at the right time, it was a AAA shooter on a new console trying to prove itself. If it were on the PS2 I don;t think it'd get as much praise

Halo just feels natural to play, I'm not a fan of the plot or even that much of master chief. Its a great game overall but the xbox controller just suits it soooo goooood (and the 360 controller as well)

Throwing grenades with one hand is impossible last i checked, not natural. Its rather unnatural.

I think what makes it so popular is the ARMOURED vehicles that redirect damage to the passengers. The pistols with sniper scopes and hollow point rocket rounds make it coolio, the tracer sniper rifle eliminates stealth in a most modern fashion.

Seriously? I reckon its the only FPS with a decent art style... to me that was what made it genredefining, but somewhat boring online, and damaged over-ballanced gameplay. That was my opinion.. but Halo 3 is actually looking fun, and i'm going to give it a try.

No but you do feel a conection to a lone man (or a few men) doing all he/they can to save something they think is worth fighting for.

Anyway this whole thred is a bit of a duh don't you think? Halos not the best FPS ever it's just a REALY solid game that anyone can get into ( I say anyone but we all know thats not true). Thats why people like it it may not be everyones favourite but (exception going to thoughs who activly try not to) it's something they can all like.

It appeals to the lowest common denominator. Casual to the core.

Nope, not just you. My friends and I poured countless hours into GE, then PD came and wow. Way more than Halo, which we played a lot of, too.

Trigger nades and melee were pretty cool, and they fit so perfectly in a console shooter. Halo CE is a very solid game with the best gameplay mechanics of any console shooter. I can't say the same for every aspect of Halo, which i think someone pointed out earlier. It's not the end all, but it's good and deserves credit.

What disturbs me though...is how rabid the fanbase is. I'm not seeing the UBER greatness of its multiplayer that really justifies the huge close minded fanbase (i mean specifically the "only Halo" fans). The single player's rabid fanbase size is also a little surprising given it has superiors in the PC world.

Yeah, its the fanbase that scare the heck out of me. I still don't understand how something like that happens. It would have been one thing if most of the fanbase really liked the game and thats that, but its another thing when a lot of the fanbase is made up of some really ignorant people.

Is it that hard to believe that hardcore gamers actually like Halo? Halo is for both casuals and hardcores, and that is what makes the franchise so amazing.

Well yes, HALO: CE was a great game for its time and it deserved hype and everything. However, it DID get lucky as to how big it eventually became, cmon, not many games sell 7 million copies. It DID get lucky but also blended in with good quality that attracted people in the first place.
