I think my PS3 is mesed up also. Compared to my other consoles, I have to turn the volume on the tv almost all the way up, just to get decent sound:(SmokieXIts completely opposite for me. I need to turn my volume down just for it to be at a reasonable level.
im glad you found ways to justify it.....just kidding. listen man, it great that you have reasons for liking your ps3...but you dont need to justify your purchases to anybody.....because wether others agree or not doesnt matter when its you who will be playing on it...anasbouzid
Yeah you're right. I just figured I'd share my experience since the PS3 seems to be getting bagged a lot everywhere, and the point I was driving at is that there are people out there that it suits more than others.

yeah, the wii too....but i love it...and the ds....and i wasnt a nintendo fanboy last gen; in fact, i hated the GC (no offense) and went with the xbox.
i just like the simplicity, the compactness, the variety, the family friendly games....and on and on....and no, i dont consider myself a casual and i am over 21.
so i see where you coming from. i find myself frequently defending the wii and sometimes the 360....but it doesnt really matter THAT mush in the end. I just saw that you are a new poster and so i assumed somesome.
[QUOTE="wisdomWarrior"]I bought a PS3 in late July. it's a pretty good dealtaikthebate
Something not right
Considering that I use the PS3 in some way (gaming, streaming, bluray, dvd with upscaling) nearly everyday, I think it's extremely good value.
If the system is to compete with the 360 and wii, then the price will need to be reduced as most people see the PS3 as only a games machine. (I don't see it that way though)

It's all good. Actually it's funny that you raise the issue of the Wii.
My brother bought a Wii the day before I bought the PS3. The Wii is awesome. I play it quite a lot, sporadically. Like if I have to kill 10 or 15minutes I'll pull out the wii and play some Wii sports. My brother is only a casual gamer as well but he enjoys playing the new Resident Evil game.
Seeing my mum play Wii Sports (Tennis) and actually enjoying herself a LOT was something I never thought I'd see. She's never taken any interest in playing video games. Everyone that comes over enjoys the Wii as well.
I don't think it is a gimmic either. I think that when we start seeing more games like Wii Sports that are designed from the ground up on the Wii to suit the motions of the remote as opposed to hacked PS2 ports, then the system will sell more games and attract more 3rd party developers.
I think the Wii is a great system to compliment something like a 360 or PS3 as the gameplay mechanics for the games are so different.

That will happen if you have 2 different pieces of electronics plugged into the same audio plug. (IE, through a splitter of some sort)

I'll take that as a compliment :)
I totally agree with you! I use my PS3 as a media centre. I steam photos throught my mobile(N80 with wi-fi) or even send movies and music from my pc(on the 2nd floor) to my PS3 and watch/ hear them on my Tv. Blu-ray looks good, but didn't tried it yet =(. Well in terms of gaming I agree, my 360 is way better(for now) but overall I have more uses for my PS3 =P. For its price it includes a Blu-Ray player, a media centre and a gaming console...just a Question how you steam from PC?(I can do it with mob..but from my laptop and PC nope so I tranfer the files throught network and save them on PS3's HDD)
Btw about Resistance, Story is good in SP but still another FPS..expect multiplayer(40 players lag free) its so fun!

Yeah the streaming is really good.
I use Tversity for streaming and copying files from my laptop to my ps3 wirelessly. You need to put the correct resolution output settings into Tversity in order to get the best picture quality possible (if you are streaming).
I do sometimes stream an entire show or play some mp3s from my laptop as well (not copied via network to PS3 HDD)
My network setup is as follows:
Laptop connects to wireless router which then sends the wi-fi signal to the PS3. (laptop-->wireless router-->PS3)
The wireless router has a connection to our cable modem.
You really should check out bluray movies for your ps3. (particularly if you can get 1080i or 1080p on your TV). I ofcourse bought a HDMI cable for display output and bought an optical audio out cable that goes from my ps3 to the 'receiver'.
Overall, I recommend doing what you currently do and that is copy the file via network to your PS3 and then watch it. It is just more simple and easier to rewind and fastfoward etc when watching a movie or tv show.
If you need to copy across avi files then I recommend a program called XviD4PSP. XviD4PSP is free and awesome for converting avi files (and other file types) into mp4 (AVC) format. (It is so easy too, just select PS3 output from dropdown box and the rest is done for you)
edit: Yeah Resistance is great for having 40 players etc online at the same time and basically no lag. However my only gripe with Resistance's multiplayer online play is that the maps IMO are just too big. Also there doesn't appear to be as many maps as what I'd like. UT3 on the otherhand is a whole other story and is the main reason I'm so amped for that game. I'll ofcourse be hooking up my KB+Mouse for it :)
The multimedia features of the 360 is the only reason why I bought it. I haven't bought a console since SNES and Genisis, I PC game the most.
I can stream music, movies, pictures, play recorded movies/TV shows all through the 360, either by wireless or wired connection. And it is very easy to set up, through either Media Center XP or Vista.
But now I am enjoying the 360's games with it's excellent online capabilities, finding that I am getting back into sport and racing titles more.
I also see the PS3 as great value as a multimedia capible machine. It's more complex to set up, but it's definately more open once you have it set up, and not limited to the frustrating limited movie formats that the 360 is limited too, although you can convert the movies quite easily through transcoder, with some quality loss. Both play HD movies, though the 360 needs the HD-DVD addon.
The PS3 really needs moregames and a cheaper price if it wants to compete though. People like you and me that love multimedia streaming are in the minority, and most just want a "Gaming Console".
Either way, both the 360 and PS3 offer tonnes more than the Wii, for a little more $$$.

Thanks a lot, I bought a new Tv yesterday(Samsung PS42C91HD) support up to 1080i and don't have a home theatre sound system yet. Still I get nice audio and picture with my HDMI cable! :P. As for movies, over here I didn't find any dvd club which rents blu-rays and most of the movies out on Blu-ray either costs a bit much :P or got them on dvd...any recomendation is welcome :P
.For files convert I use PS3 Video 9 and to send files PS3 Media Centre X, but that takes space on my HDD(got like 35 gbs sound/ videos and still didn't send most of my playlist).
Thanks again!

Not little more $$$, but yea the offer a lot more, but most of kids and casual people just want a gaming machine and wii is just that actually.
As for the rest of what you said, true indeed. But to tell the truth 360 is a bit more limited as a multimedia. Cz u need Vistas or Media Center XP, as for its set up, I did it with my 360 some time ago and its easy. PS3 on the other side is more "on it self" no need for a pc at all, you use its memory card reader(SD/CF/MMD Pro), save what you want on your HDD(when I go to friend with my PS3 we usually watch a movie or two that I have store on my HDD), while on 360 you need a pc. But its kinda complicate, limited format support for videos and you need all that take movie, add sub, compress it and then convert it...time waste sometimes :/.

I disagree, the 360 is just a little more money than the Wii, and you get tremendous more features than a Wii. But I did state that mulitimedia folks as our selves are in the minority, and most just want a gaming console.
And you don't need Vista or Media Center to stream media to the 360, XP will do, just not all the bells and whistles. Sometimes I just bypass Media Center and stream my music from my PC so I can get the funky pycadelic screen saver playing.
All though you can use memory cards, I find it rather redundantand impratical to use them. Why use them when all your media is on your HDD, but a point regardless.
And why not use a external HDD with the 360? Format the HDD with FAT32, plug into the USB port and their you have an External HDD hooked up to your 360. But yah, MS and their limited movie formats are a pain in the behind, having to use transcoder to convert them.
And as I mentioned before, the PS3 is a more robost multimedia machine "IF" you spend time installing Linux with all the programs to stream the video's. If you do that, sure, the PS3 is better as I mentioned in my previous post. But out of the box with no tinkering, the PS3 is sort of on level playing field as the 360 minus the bluray player which can be added (HD-DVD) to the 360.
Their are plus and minuses to each machine, with the PS3 having the ulitimate edge with Linux and accesoriesinstalled for multimedia. For me, I choose the 360 soley for my needs, which the 360 meets pretty good multimedia wise, better gaming library right now and definate better online capabilites.
Too each there own.........but definately for the money, the 360 and PS3 leaves the Wii in the dust if you utilize there full features.
I bought a PS3 in late July. It turned out to be a defective unit. It would freeze all the time.
At first it worked ok with just the occasional freezing and auto-switching off. But then as two weeks went buy it got increasingly worse. At that point I took it back to the retailer and got it exchanged for a new one.
The new one I got has been really rock solid, so I'm extremely happy with it.
Anyway, like many others have posted about the PS3, they say that it has little games and not a great system to own at the moment. I have to disagree. I'm not a hardcore gamer and work full time. I'd say I'm quite happy if I get 5-7hrs of gaming fit into each week.
My system came with Resistance and F1 CE. Resistance is ok. (typical fps). It is fairly enjoyable to play in single player mode with a good story. The graphics are ok but nothing spectacular in my opinion. The multi player is fun in DM and TDM but CTF is not interesting (the maps are waay too big).
F1 CE is fantastic but because my PS3 was defective (the first one), I lost all my save games and now have to start world championship mode from the beginning again (which is mildly annoying). F1 is an awesome game with excellent longevity. I seriously see myself playing that game for years and years.
My latest purchase has been Ninja Gaiden Sigma and its absolutely incredible fun. I only bought it a week ago but I'm already up to chapter 6. Great fun.
The PS3 has been great for me, personally because I love the DLNA streaming capabilities and being able to copy movies, tv shows etc to the PS3 (via wireless network). I copied the entire season 6 of smallville and my family has been enjoying that aspect heaps. Prior to the PS3 I would hook up an s-video cable from my laptop to the TV in order to watch dloaded movies but now it's much better.
I also regularly hire out Bluray movies from my local Blockbuster. It's swheet watching movies in High Definition.
The PS3 itself looks like it fits into the home theatre setup we've got at home. (it doesn't stand out).
Anyway I think that already there are plenty of good games on it but I'm mostly looking forward to UT3, time crises 4, and Uncharted. When I say plenty of games, I'm talking about from my perspective (of a non-hardcore gamer).
My personal opinion is that if you are a hardcore gamer, then you should definitely pick up a 360 instead, until more games come out for the PS3. If on the other hand you want to use your console as more of a media centre+some gaming then pick up a PS3. The PS3 looks nicer in a home theatre setup and with the ability to watch bluray movies and stream content without buying attachments (HD DVD and WiFi), it's a pretty good deal overall :)wisdomWarrior
Congrats dude the PS3 is seriously worth its price.

My volume also seems too high but thats a minor problem. I am more worried about the freezing, happened to me twice last night during Warhawk matches...thinking of taking it back before it gets worse.

When your system freezes, do you still have access via the control pad to quit the game? i.e. hold playstation button down for two seconds to bring up the quit menu?--Does that still work during your freeze?
When my system was defective I could do nothing with the control pad.
I'll tell you this. My system got more and more worse as the frequency of freezing increased. It eventually became unusable, crashing just by insterting a game cd.

That for the money I said it more like a joke, so relux.
Memory cards are useful, when I want to connect my camera or mobile(without using Wi-Fi, eg:low on bat.) I use my memory card.
Actually I said that PS3 got more limited formats. The external HDD idea didn't tried it to sayd my opinion. But I read on a MS FQA that you can't save files, just steam them, maybe I am wrong but anyway...
You don't need linux, just find and install a good media center apli on your PC(like PS3 Media Center X) and you can browse your PC files and download them on your PS3. Still a bit more complex that 360.
Both got/ will get HDMI and 360 will include a such cable in the box, unlike PS3. Making 360 more like, HD out of the box :P
I agree that both consoles leaves Wii in the dust, if you use them on full scale. Which is better? for now 360(even without HDMI), for everyday media center. while ps3 is more like, the future(ffs sony how long in the future? i want something more as a gaming console!) and since DvDs are not out the market yet, blu-ray or hd-dvd is not so needed! when that happen, I think Blu-ray will stay(more companies support it + more retailers) so it may be a good excuse to the 360 - PS3 price different!
I think my PS3 is mesed up also. Compared to my other consoles, I have to turn the volume on the tv almost all the way up, just to get decent sound:(SmokieX
I know what you mean. What a pain having to turn up the volume and charge your controllers. I'd rather buy batteries and have to deal with customer service to fix my console /sarcasm off
