yes, you heard me right...overrated.

http://apps.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbox360/alanwake

an 83 Metacritic rating? are you ****ing kidding me? after i played this i felt OBLIGATED to go back to a game with a more coherent story (from the constant melodrama) and non-repetitive gameplay (shine light, shoot, repeat, shine light, shoot, repeat).

any website that gave this game over an 8.5 need to be diagnosed ASAP for INSANITY.

I thought it was awesome, just beat "The Writer" today, I really hope they get to do a sequel.

Looks at CODMW2 and Heavy Rain metascores, if anything it was underrated.

83 ain't overrated... at least not these days, i could understand if it was a 90ish or something like that, but at 83 it does represent that the game has some issues, which has to be overlooked to be enjoyable

no specifics? these threads with a loose representation of overrated are boring. generic beat-around-the-bush explanation without having to play the game to really even know.

seems like a fair accusation if you don't want to provide those specifics.

ah well, at least this thread matches the norm.

but scratch another one off. how many Xbox 360 games are overrated now?

I wonder if there will ever come a day when a game is appropriately rated. Like, not over-rated, not under-rated, but perfectly rated. That's the world I want to live in, one day....

you'd almost have to ask for a world without exclusives.

even that might not solve the whole problem of slapping a loose term on every game when someone sees it fit.

I heartily enjoyed the game. Sure the Taken were repetitive, but as a whole the game was something unique. It's no Steven King novel, but at least it tried to be, which is much more than I can say for most games this gen, especially shooters.

I thought it was fantastic and hand a wonderful story/gameplay. A nice change of pace from the usual hollywood all style no substance games we usually get.

If you think it's repetitive, then every FPS/shooter on the market is even worse. It's a great game (and GS agree), and probably one of the best SP games I've played this gen. That's right, I said it .

I gotta be honest here.. AW became a lot less appealing once I learned it's a "wifey is kidnapped" quest and that the game want's Stephen King's children real bad.

I'm not gonna call SK a bad author but you really should'nt be putting him on a pedestal.

Edit: Feel free to spoil me. I'm dying to know why this psychological imagination thriller needs your wife kidnapped.

Editedit: I suppose Dark Tower by King is very good but he's nowhere near the caliber of people like Frank Herbert, Chris More, Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, Steven Erikson and I'm sure they must have a horror/thriller equivalent somewhere.

Which is honestly something I would argue takes it into a territory that is as bad as most games this gen(especially shooters). Why was it trying so hard to emulate a novel or a TV shows brand of story telling so much? A lot of it came at the expense of some gameplay pacing issues, and contrived scenarios where he would just end up in a forrest, or end up with no weapons all of a sudden. Games shouldn't be trying to emulate a Stephen King Novel, maybe be inspired by it. Ideally they should be working on being good games first(which yes I will admit I think Alan Wake is a good game).

The game has issues but overall it is great. My main problem is Remedy charging money for DLC that extends the main story. Finish the damn story in one game and make a sequel if the funding is there.

I thought the actual narrative was fantastically told. It was the variation of how it was told (manuscripts, cutscenes, radio) that helped build an atmosphere. It tried to be immersive, and for a TPS (I'd class it as that) it works. The horror elements were timed brilliantly too, not OTT and never cheap.

lots of immersion the game could have had was lost from the repetitive gameplay and nearly identical enemies, not to mention the lack of guns

What repetitive gameplay? I'll be honest and say yes, certain areas felt it - but overall the game felt fresh. Lack of guns? Should Remedy of stuck a rocket launcher in there somewhere? It felt like survival, and it worked.

I thought it was a pretty damn good game. It did not go the way of cover based shooters that are becoming ever so prevalent these days opting for a more interesting gameplay mechanic. If you play the game on the harder difficulties the constant search for light sources is pretty exhilarating. The story, while plagued with quite a few plot holes and stupid decisions (who gets drunk with axe murders in their back yard) was more in depth and developed then most stories out there. I would say the MC rating is pretty spot on

the whole wife thing is a typical game gimmick so I can forgive that but the console gutting along with the Steven King worship just killed my interest.

Don't get me wrong but this games reeks of wanting to have a deep and good story and if that's the case, I don't see why they could'nt think of something better than another "go get wifey" start and then proceeding to kiss Steven King's ass every 10 minutes.

I read too many of his books to be fooled by that.

it's actually a decent game, i hate how u cant crouch and the game points out the enemy..the darkness for you though.

It's actually underrated pretty much, they should add a multiplayer mode lol, darkness vs humans...or straight up deathmatch lol where everyone is already possessed by the darkness and with flashlights trying to kill each other..cool because u gotta keep light on person for a few seconds to get darkness away then u kill them.

Gameplay was hardly repetitive and their were about as many enemy variations as their were in say Killzone 2.

Wait wait wait. The horror was timed terrible. Nothing was more horror/atmosphere killing at times than when the game pans out and tells you where everyone is coming from. The game has this uneasy atmosphere, but when it came to the game play it did so much to make you feel safe and protected essentially. The multiple devices to tell the story was good. The other scenarios that feel like a product of the TV/Novel styIed story telling ran the fine line of being questionable though. They could have done some more variation with him not always ending up in the woods. Also the game needed to start tipping its hand too much. That swirling wind thing was too much of a give away that a bunch of taken were near. Little complaints maybe, but I thought they would have sold the atmosphere/horror a bit more.

I think it's a good game. One that is well worth completing. But the game has a handful of design issues as well as a fair amount of repetition. I also may be one of the few who enjoyed the game but found the story to be weak for the most part.

Thank you. That's worthwhile info. His concepts are fine and he's written some great books but he's rather easily dismissed as mainstream if you're an avid reader. Hence, why I hated the idea of the game wanting to be a King book.

Here's to hoping for a PC port then (or the 360 peaking my interest enough for a new purchase :P)

@ Champ (because the quote system confused me). The highlight of enemies did annoy me, but it also terrified me - as I suddenly knew I had to face 5 enemies with 4 rounds of ammo and a flare. Maybe it's just me, but yeah it worked - but it could've been better definitely.

Yeh...maybe you should finish the game.

I did'nt play it at all.

the whole wife thing is a typical game gimmick so I can forgive that but the console gutting along with the Steven King worship just killed my interest.

Don't get me wrong but this games reeks of wanting to have a deep and good story and if that's the case, I don't see why they could'nt think of something better than another "go get wifey" start and then proceeding to kiss Steven King's ass every 10 minutes.

I read too many of his books to be fooled by that.

Right, let's pick a writer 80% of the audience has never heard of, because that makes sense. Your contempt for a game you haven't played and Stephen King are pretty humorous, and seemingly baseless.

His name gets dropped a few times, but it's hardly a giant billboard of Stephen King quotes. Follows similar concepts of his brand of horror story telling to an extent, but nothing to be insulting to anyone sick of Stephen King to be frank.

There are some obvious homages to some of his novels, but the name dropping(which Yahtzee had fun with lol) was only there a few times if I remember correctly. The opening cutscene, but in that sense I kind of agree. I hate when anything horror related explains itself. The minute you explain everything it stops being scary.

The only thing "overrated" about Alan Wake was that stupid picture of the jacket people would post for years. Other than that, I think the game gets a decent amount of hype (not too much, not too little).

You really need to read more if you never heard of, or think a lot of people don't know those writers he listed.

So you had no idea who the hell they were name dropping? I don't see any contempt for King in what I wrote. I just don't think a game should worship his material since it in itself is somewhat mainstream to begin with.

And I'm supposed to ignored my knowledge of the source material? What does "80%" of the audience's ignorance have to do with me?

I already got a much more informative and usefull response so just keep it up.

Edit: And pretty much everyone knows who Stephen King is. Everyone who reads anyway.....

I've read more than most on these boards, but thanks. Drop those names on XBL, and I can bet over half rarely read novels, and the rest have heard of Douglass Adams if they're lucky. I'm not saying they are bad writers, but they don't have the notoriety by any means that Stephen King has, and most wouldn't even make sense in the game.

I wonder if there will ever come a day when a game is appropriately rated. Like, not over-rated, not under-rated, but perfectly rated. That's the world I want to live in, one day....

skinny_man_69

That world does exist. Outside of system wars :P:P
