I know its been said many times. That Blu-Ray isn't needed because the most graphically intense game in on PC and that uses DVD9. The counter claim to this is that PC doesn't need a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drive because it installs game data on to the HDD.

Now a lot of people gave flack to MS for not having the HDD standard unlike the PS3 which has a HDD standard in every console. Since the PS3 has an HDD in every console like the PC why should it need a Blu-Ray player when PC doesn't need one as well? I mean you can't use the exuse that PC doesn't need Blu-Ray because it has HDD standard when all PS3's have HDD standard as well. To me the Blu-Ray is just a luxary it isn't a neccestiy for gaming or developers for PS3 if they have the HDD standard on all consoles.

Without the Blu-Ray player the PS3 would have benifited from a lower price and an earlier launch. I mean games aren't big enough on console that they need to be installed now but the 60GB HDD would have proved to be an advantage later on even without Blu-Ray. Even without Blu-Ray PS3 would still have the advantage of standard HDD thus the capability of the "so called" bigger unrestricted games so many brag about.

even with the hdd the games are in hd. the audio graphics etc. games on 360 may look hd but they dont give you the hd audio because the disc limit the space. with blu ray you are able to get the full hd experience.

also the games would take longer to load because they would have to compress them so much with blu ray the games dont have to be compress and this along with the hdd decreases load times.

It was about movies. 1080p movies with 7.1 surround. That was the reason for Sony using Bluray in the PS3. It had nothing to do with the games. It is a movie format.

Although, you do make an excellent point. If they compressed the games and stuck them on DVD9 (like PC's) they could have easily installed the games to the super fast HDD and skipped Bluray altogether. Seeing as how a lot of games are already doing this to makeup for the Bluray drives slow reading speed.

They should have made the PS3 a single SKU, with optional Bluray addon for those that want the movies, standard 100GB HDD with optional ability to change the drive to whatever you buy and pricing around the Xbox 360.

I am telling you, it would have been extremely successful.

I just read an article that says Resistance: Fall on man is actually 5GB, but it has 17GB of "artificial padding". It was from

November '06, but still..I can't seem to copy-n-paste it on Firefox, but I found it by googling..It was at qj.net. It was

found by some user who ripped to blu-ray -disc into linux ..They tried to contact Insomniac, apparently Insomniac has not replied.

1.umm to watch movies in High Def .

2.since analog broadcast will be dead in a year,  ppl might buy HDTV's during the next 2-5yrs time.

3 since anaglog is going to be no longer used. a person either has to suscribe for digi service, or buy a tv with DTV built in it (which are HDTV's)

4. i guess since ppl will have HDTV's due to analog dying which may prompt ppl to buy HDTV with DTV built in them. they would like to watch movies in Hi Def /shrug

I guess sony thought best to get ppl prepaird for High Def conten /shrug.

I think the HDD is for saving games, helping load times, for extra content from the marketplace, patches, etc.

blu ray disc is for an individual game's feature.

Very good point. I agree with u, and people dont understand that, with ps3 games on bluray, u get alot more then u think then u do with dvd9's. It was a good move by sony, yes it is a big risk because of price, but I think they were looking at this race at the long run of the ps3 is where they will start to pull ahead of the pack. If we learned anything about sony and there consoles, is that they support each system for 10 years of its life cycle, while others like MS and Nintendo seem to move on. I think in order to be on top, u will have to take chances sometimes but what makes the odds in favor of sony is that even with the price so high, we all know they will eventually drop and when the prices are dropped to where the casuals feel comfortable buying the ps3, they will, and to prove my point, just look at the ps2 sales even with the system almost out for 8 years, it still is the best selling system to date, even with the next gen systems out. :)

Infamous's point about HD Audio is the only valid point I am seeing so far. For you people that claim you need it to watch movies well sorry but this was supposed to be a game machine first and it was supposed to be for games. But is HD Audio the only benifit from using Blu-Ray over DVD9 + HDD? Do I need a certain setup to utilize HD Audio? (I'm buying a new system soon so might as well ask) Can PC do HD Audio?

Thats why it has sold so little.  Because sony turned it into a BluRay player instead of a game console.  The ps3 is a joke, right?

Why are you asking me if the PS3 is a joke with a "?" at the end? My objective isn't to prove that PS3 is bad/good or whatever. I am just looking for informative answers.

not true, there are a lot of dtv sets that are not hd, available on the market, ... and you don't need to buy a new tv, you just need a set top box, and they can be picked up for around £30

I have a PS3 and some BR movies, and HD-DVD has a superior menu interface and looks just as good visually.  I know it's not selling as well though.

So I'm sorry, but I don't like it.  I'd rather the PS3 cost $400 and used DVD for games.

Simple to answer! BR discs hold a lot of data for ultimately the highest definition for DVD movie play. Also it will allow a canvas as-big-as a game developer could ever need it. They built the system to last 10+ years. M$ has already released another xbox with the Elite and the PS3 is still ahead of the Elite in hardware.

Wow alot of you people are missing the whole point of games on blu-ray disk.  Why not just put games on regular CDs? The'eve made some really great games on the CD format  (PS1 games were on CDs)  As you all know, that would be lame...reason why games have moved to Blu-Ray is simple cause of storage issues...People want big levels, longer games, high def graphics, uncompressed audio...ALL THAT CANNOT FIT ON A 9GB DVD WITHOUT BEING COMPRESSED,THIS IS WHY GEARS OF WAR IS ONLY 7 LEVELS LONG. THIS IS ALSO WHY OBLIVION IS 4 DISKS LONG!!  High Def takes up lots of space!

It's not needed. Sony has a vested interest in the success in Blu-Ray.

Why not put it in the successor to what is likely their most popular product?

Because the game has to fit onto a disk...The HDD is for faster load times, downloadable content and saves.

Wrong. Hook up your console through a $2000 THX certified sound reciever through some referance quality speakers, then come back and tell me that a PC sound card is better.

That argument might work if Gears of War actually filled the DVD 9. :|

And since when is Oblivion 4 discs long? Last time I checked, there was only 1 disc in my Oblivion case.

In addtion, High Def does NOT take up a lot of space. High Def audio and FMV's take up a lot of space. Real time graphics do not take up a lot of space since it's only telling the GPU how many pixels to render on screen.

Well the sound card is part of the PC's hardwarde the THX certifed sound reciever is just another peripherial that both the PC and PS3 are capable of using which completly destroys your point of claiming PS3 has better sound.

This bring me to another point. If all Blu-Ray is doing is allowing bigger storage then why does PS3 need it with standard HDD's? Its been proven that PC has greater sound capabilities and its still using DVD9.

Sony says they needed to have Blu-ray disc from a game design point of view.

The chipsets in PS3 chew through data at such a rate that in order to build variety and detail and quality into the games, we need more than nine gigabytes.

You can hook up your PC to that setup and it will defaintly sound better...

If you want the best audio around you play it from your PC with a Auzentech X-Meridian 7.1 or for gaming a Creative Labs X-Fi...

They kill console audio... FACT/

P.S. audiophile use PC to obtain the highest clarity and sound from PC..why would you use a console with a generic DD decoder..

[QUOTE="Shu76"]Wow alot of you people are missing the whole point of games on blu-ray disk. The_Game21x

Real time graphics do not take up a lot of space since it's only telling the GPU how many pixels to render on screen.

...I think that was ownage

Sony says they needed to have Blu-ray disc from a game design point of view.

The chipsets in PS3 chew through data at such a rate that in order to build variety and detail and quality into the games, we need more than nine gigabytes.

Simple to answer! BR discs hold a lot of data for ultimately the highest definition for DVD movie play. Also it will allow a canvas as-big-as a game developer could ever need it. They built the system to last 10+ years. M$ has already released another xbox with the Elite and the PS3 is still ahead of the Elite in hardware.casey7672

It's just a revision, not another generation all together
