When there is a talk about fighting games and someone mentions DOA they get flamed. There are quite a few fellow DOA fans here but everywhere else I get eaten alive. The only reason I heard is that all the characters have 'weak personalities' (because we all know that Vitrual fighter's characters are so deep with their one-liners and story-less cut scenes) and the combos and few and too easy to pull off. But besides blind hatred can anyone give me detailed reasons why it's a weak fighter? :(

DOA4 is great it's fast fun and has easy cool looking combos. Tekken just feels to slow for me after DOA same with Virtua Fighter

I've never played it, but a lot of people say it's too much of a button-masher.

Not really sure why, but after playing SC4 online, my fondness for DOA 4 grew. DOA 4 feels more balanced and less button mashing to me now.

It has an awesome counter system, i'll give it that. I just found DOA4 really dull after a few hours. It gets old very quickly.

They're not bad, I rather like the DoA series, but it's not Virtua Fighter 5/Soul Calibur good, and on System Wars, every game that isn't widely considered the best game ever made in its genre is considered to be absolutely terrible.

Because DoA has just as poor balance as SC4 (SC4 is balanced other than Yoda/Starkiller), in fact it's even worse. The high tiers completely obliterate the low and bottom tiers and the fact you can button mash and win even against a skilled player makes the game less fun.

It's not bad, I think it's really good. But the fighting system needs some more polishing. For example, a missed counter has a shorter recovery time than a missed throw which means there is too little risk in spamming counters (especially low ones).

DOA isn't a bad fighting game. The characters are balanced. Because of that I could never really say it was bad (unless I pulled some insanely extreme examples... that DOA series clearly wouldn't fit into), but its just different. It seperates itself from other fighters. You either like it because of that or you dislike it because its not like something else.

is it just me or 75% of ppl bought DOA:Xtreme bolleyball 2 just for the graphics?

this kids

12345yon

Just you. I say 99% of people purcahsed it for masturbation 20% purcahsed for masturbation and because they love games where you have to collect alot of stuff. 25% purcahsed it because they think a volleyball game would be fun to watch, plus at worst they can use it for masturbation 1% has no plans of masturbation and either just wanted a game where you can collect stuff or were fooled into thinking it was a serious volleyball sim.

Especially 2. My friend has it (yes its my friend, check my gamercard if you doubt) and the volleyball mechanics are really kinda crappy. The camera is bad and you often can't really position your characters to hits because you can't see them when the ball is on the other team's side. Things like that show that the volleyball as a gameplay mechanic was an afterthought and it was more like, "We can't make a strip club simulator, but I do want to have a bunch of women running around half naked with their breast bouncing and wearing thongs... what will allow us to do that?" And everyone decided volleyball was the way to make it happen, and nobody would be upset when there were no male characters (unlike how it would be for a fighting game).

Unbalanced, too much button mash, forgettable characters, emphasis on style (big boobs) over substance (deep combos, balance).

I don't hate it, I just tend to be really biased towards Tekken. The only fighters I like these days that aren't named Tekken are Soulcalibur and Virtua Fighter.

In the old days it was Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Killer Instinct, King of Fighters... Battle Arena Toshinden was kinda like a precursor to Soulcalibur, I thought it was fun, but I was like 11 the last time I played it so I don't know if it still holds any water. There was also this banned 4 player 3D fighter on PSone that I had a EU copy of, it was ridiculously violent... mental patients killing eachother was the premise. Played surprisingly well. I also had some fun with the first two Def Jams and the Wu Tang clan fighter. HOO! HAA!

Side note, does anyone remember an exclusive Sega Genesis fighter? I am blanking on the name, but it had sort of Street Fighter-esque graphics... the only character I definitely remember was a lizard/serpent guy with a trident.

I'm surprised anyone would consider it bad, I mean it's a hybrid mix of two great franchises (Virtua Fighter & Tekken), with it's own unique flair (multi-tiered, interactive environments.) The characters have their own personal techniques and the only 'unbalanced' one's are the ninjas, but that doesn't mean they're unbeatable.

DOA has come a long way to become the good fighter it is today.

Battle arena toshiden suffers from pretty much everything you just said :|

the sega game you're talking about is eternal champions which also suffers from everything you just said

and i always thought DOA 4 was pretty balanced (except for the boss battles)

Why do people mention that the DoA games are unbalanced and shallow and then mention Tekken as a good fighting game?

I can agree that Virtua Fighter is a much more deep and balanced fighter but Tekken is not.

I love DoA 4. But the Ninjas are unbalanced. Go against a SS with 2 Ninjas in tag and he's pulling 15-20 hit juggle combos. It's amazing to watch them pull it off but it's frustrating when you're getting your ass kicked that bad.

People are getting owned on the game and claims it's the games fault, same reason they claim that SSBB is shallow.

People don't know how to counter.

Most of the good people don't even spam counters. Each missed counter is more damage taken from you. They only counter when they are pretty sure at anticipating the next move.

Yes it's very similar to Tekken. At least SC is balanced other than the bonus characters, and VF and SF are generally fairly balanced series as well. Tekken and DoA are quite similar. If only the Ninjas in DoA4 weren't so ridiculous it would've been a much more balanced game.

Well it's much more balanced than SC4 since the button smashing is easily dealt with in DOA4 with counters.
