Why is Final Fantasy 6 so overrated?

I played it recently and thought it was nothing special. The story was boring, the characters were not memorable and the gameplay was standard as hell. Also the game was super easy. It had great visuals and music, I will give it that, but other than that it is nothing extraordinary. Yet so many people call it one of the greatest RPGs, if not even the greatest game of all time. It is a tragedy that people think it is better than Final Fantasy 7.

I will probably give it 8/10.

6 was great. 4 is better IMO

All I can say about the FF series is that 6-10 are must-plays.

7 is my favorite, but I'm sure there's some heavy nostalgia in that opinion.

Lol. 6 is much better than 7. Thats not to say 7 is anywhere close to a bad game. But if any FF game is hugely overrated it is 7

Never played 6 but FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX are pretty much like my favorites. XII was okay. XIII was good but it didn't live up to the Final Fantasy name. The spinoffs were unnecessary because the game wasn't even that good. FFXV was good but severely lacking in story which really surprised me considering how long they took to make the damn game. Graphics were impeccable, tho

OP. What was the first RPG game you ever played? I've noticed a lot of younger gamers tend to have issues with 2D era games just because overall production quality as well as graphics have evolved over the years. For the time that FFVI came out, it was absolutely enormous. Also, the bad guy actually wins, thus beginning Act II and a completely different story arch for the protagonists.

Sure, there is little in the way of animation. The game is certainly dated in its design. Still, it has to be said that VI took the classic 2D rpg to its absolute limits (and heights). The only games that held a candle to it were Lunar: Silver Star and Eternal Blue.

I don't think it's overrated at all. I played it when it originally released and the game was amazing.

Frankly, I find that Final Fantasy VII and VI are heavily overrated. Fans of both games have put the two games on a pedestal that they can no longer live up to. Nostalgia goggles are bad, mkay? They distort your vision of the very piece of crap standing before you.

No idea, maybe because they didn't play Chrono Cross (PSX).

First 20+ hours are great but after around 30 hr mark, I lost interest completely. I dislike the combat system and the fact it has far too many characters, it would/could have been better if they focused on fewer characters but they are more fleshed out.

FF6 was fun back when I playedi t but it was many years ago. I feel none of the 2D FFs measure up to XII (my all time fave) and then VII, VIII and IX are all great too. Eaisly the high point in JRPG history.

To be fair, both 6 and 7 are overrated. The best FF game is 12 International.

FFVI is overrated because of the FFVII backlash. Before, FFVII was the one that was overrated, being hailed as one of the greatest games of all time. This led to an online backlash, with many overrating FFVI as a knock against FFVII. And now FFVI has taken its place as the most overrated in the series.

Yeah if Kefka is not memorable then wtf?

No main character, rather every single member of the cast has character development. Kefka stole the show, however.

I liked FFVI, IV and VII, not VIII, IX a lot. X was ok. XII was boring, XIII wierd, XV was well made but the story so bad even after watching the movie and the mini movie, it was like FFVI without what was good about VI.

X-2 is probably my least favorite FF.

He is a stupid clown, dont see the appeal. Cant even remember the motivation behind his actions.

He's supposed to be The Joker of the FF series. And he does a pretty good job of it... But since I find The Joker to be overrated, I'd have to say the same about Kefka.

Nope, FF VI is the greatest Final Fantasy I've ever played.

I mean, your description of FF6 could just as easily be applied to FF7 lol.

Anyways. I loved both games at the time, but I could actually replay FFVI now and have some fun with it. Can't say the same of FFVII.

6 is one of the best games ever.

I can always go back to FFVII, but that's just pure nostalgia. Unfortunately the graphics don't hold up well AT ALL.

FFVI on the other hand is pretty much the pinnacle of sprite based rpg graphics for the time, and still hold up well today.

That's a great game then. 8 out of 10 is great. If it is nothing special, I'd expect at least 6/10 at the most.

Why does anyone believe that there is an objective factual ranking of games or any entertainment? Its all subjective to an individuals tastes. I think they all suck.

Its a great game, but not the best of all time category etc. An 8/10 is a game that I enjoyed but didnt amaze me. I will give FF 7 10/10.

That's what I've always thought.

The motives are that he enjoys killing, destruction, and suffering. His motives are in his actions. He is a serial killer that enjoys the act.

His motives are far more clear than Sephiroth's.

Or maybe because VII just ages poorly. That's what happened. FFVI overtook FFVII because it aged far better and as more people played it, realized that its simply put, a more consistent game.

I actually find the whole series overrated, but that's just me. Playing the old ones as a kid might have made me a fan, but I didn't. And I've played some at a later age and wasn't amused.

To be fair, Final Fantasy 7 is uglier, has worse music and blander characters, and the story was a jumbled mess. I don't know why anyone would consider it a better game than FF6 (which is a masterpiece, and the series' peak).

Also, screw the nostalgia arguments. I played both of them again recently, and FF7 has *not* aged well compared to FF6.

It was even behind the times in the late 90's. Black Isle had better RPGs.

Makes no sense to say something was "behind the times" by comparing it to something that didn't exist yet.

You forgot to mention gameplay. That's where FF7 has the edge over FF6.

Fallout 1 and 2, Baldur's Gate I and II, Planescpae Torment and even Ice wind Dale are all more advanced RPGs than Final Fantasy VII-X

In fact, in 1997 Fallout seems to be the game model that stood the test of time more than FFVII.

6 is one of my favorite JRPGs. It's a wonderful game and deserves every ounce of praise it gets.

All of those games released after FFVII. It can't be "behind the times" if those other games didn't even release in its time.

The Fallout example would only make any sense at all if you're completely ignoring the JPN release of FFVII, which predated it by almost a year.
