Why is it so hard to believe that the PS3 could last ten years?

I mean if you look at the ps2, sony is still supporting it. It came out in late 1999 if i can remember correctly and for a last gen console, sales are still going strong. And say beginning of 2008 is a cutoff point, then that would mean that the ps2 lasted and was supported by sony for a long 7-8 years. Why dont you think the same could be for the ps3?

Microsoft and nintendo totally abanodoned the gamecube and xbox alltogether when their new consoles came out.

Sure some could say that maybe sony is still supporting it cause the ps3 is doing so poorly, but i believe they did the same for the ps1, in fact i dont think they offically stopped supporting it until years after the ps2 came out. Im thinking this gives sony some credibility in their word.

And who knows what E3 can bring and where sony can go from there so i dont think people should be so quick to disclaim that statement, althought make all the cracks you want about the 4d statement :P

P.S. there is a new game engine coming out that promises 4d graphics, 4d is time in space, so basically what the engine promises is that the environment will degrade in time ad the game progresses. Heres a linkt to the youtube video.

Sony is still supporting the PS2 because it made a profit before the PS3 came out and it's still selling. The Xbox only lost money, made no profit and was selling poorly so there was no reason to keep it alive after the 360 hit.

That's not hard to understand either.

I don't doubt it, though 10 years is a very, very long time.

sony's support for the ps2 may be waht's hurting the ps3's sales. Companies don't want to become their own competitor, and hgaving 2 consoles out at the same time will do just that.

console always come out about every 5 years, and sony will need to release the PS4 about 5 years from now to compete with the other 2. Supporting the ps3 at the same time isn't a good idea, because it will steal sales away from their newest console. Sony will probably WANT to pull the plug on it before 10 years is up, so they don't loose market share next gen

Having two consoles out at ones is a great idea.

The PS2 and PS3 arent aiming for the same audience at the moment, the one is an last-gen system with an incredible library and a small pricetag. The PS3 is the new and hot toy, with beautiful graphics but at a very steep price.

In 5 years when (and if) the PS4 is realised, it's not gonna compete against the PS3.

The PS2 was realesed in 2000. The PS3 won't last 10 years, thats just PR BS. It isn't turning out to be the dominant console this gen (it may change, but not on the same scala as last gen), and why would a console all of a sudden last 10 years? The development of electronics is growing ever faster, what seems like an impressive piece of hardware certainly won't in only 4-5 years.

I think they mean "last ten years" in a literal sense. Sony will probably continue to manufacture the PS3 deep into 2016. After all, the PS1 only ceased production in May 2006 if I recall correctly, a good 10+ years after its launch date. And even if third-party support dries up on the PS2, it will probably still be manufactured until around 2010. I can see a little logic in the argument that the PS3s long life span will steadily contribute to its overall success in the console war. Not to outright say it'll win though, oh no..

Ten years is a very long stretch in a consoles life, by supporting I think they mean to keep manufactoring hardware and software, but a continues flow of games for ten years is something I'm scepticle about.

sony manufactered psone for 10 years. sony plans to manufacture ps2 for ten years as its going into its eighth year now. they said they will do the same with ps3 i don't know why it is hard for people to understand that. just because they said they will manufacture ps3 for 10 years does not mean ps4 won't arrive before the 10 year period is up.

10 years from now, if the PS3 is still Sony's most recent console, it will be last gen while its competitors are getting ready for the generation after next gen.  Even if the PS3's visuals stay relevant there are many more things that go into "next gen." I'd really hope that they wouldn't commit such suicide.

itll last 10 years if its successful like the PS1 and 2 were. sony will drop it like a stone if it fails to compete though. they supported the others for so long because they made money. they wont support a platform thats not doing enough business for 10 years.

so basically it comes down to how well it sells and how well the software sells. there will be a PS4 around 2011 though...to compete with whatever ninty and MS have. PS3 wont be there leading platform for 10 years. by 2010 itll be so out of date it wont be funny.

This is why people shouldn't judge PS3 based on current sales. Who knows what they have in store for Wii and 360.

The Playstation brand is too powerful to just fail. It's all a matter of what sony does to make it worth buying. I see sony taking rather large initial losses before they just let one of thier flagship brands die off. Playstation makes sony alot of money, and is an integral part of thier corporations revenue, they use thier PS brand to push thier other products, and they use thier other products to add value to PS consoles.

10 years wont matter 3-4 years more next gen will start, you wont care about ps3 in 2011 anymore, sony just trying to get people to think it will get amazing games through 10 years ,

ps2 hasnt hit 10 years yet, and look at it, its collecting dust for me

Well they just stopped making Playstions last year. I don't doubt it, although it's kind of funny that they think it will sell until then. It isn't even selling much now.

I would agree with you about a year ago, but right now PS is losing Sony money without signs of releasing any pressure.  Everyone thought Sony was unstoppable until the PS3.  They've obviously proved that they can make mistakes.  Nothing is invincible.
