Why is it that the biggest/hyped franchises always seem overrated and underpar?

I'm specifically considering games that were hyped as sequals from last generation.

Metal Gear Solid 4

Halo 3 / ODST

FF13

Splinter Cell ( flopped here, but in general it didn't )

Overrated/underpar to who?

I found them all to be excellent games.

You nailed it right there with the word "I".

It's all about what we individually feel, and I felt that all those games were great.

I see where the TC is coming from. Basically, games become hyped to a point of absurdity, and expectations surpass reality. Alan Wake for example, this game has been hyped for the past 5 years. If its not a perfect 10 people will be saying, "we waited 5 years for this?".

Not everyone is like this, but its always been my theory that hype kills most big-name games rather than results.

because most of those games under deliver, for example if you compare the amount of things to do to any of those games to their previous one, you gonna realized that graphics is the only that was improved. It may be the exact same game but most of the time they actually have a lot less content then the previous one.

except for splinter cell or other franchises i didn't play yet ( since i never played one yet) there isn't one game from this gen that was better then the one done last gen and yes I prefered FF 12 over 13

i have to say that is one of the funniest sigs ive seen. kudos for you

back to the topic, i think the biggest hyped franchise is halo. omg its such a subpar game with bad hit detection or super super juggernaut. even from halo one, its pointless to run with an assault rifle because it takes soo many bullets to kill someone and i'm not even sure it has a box to detect headshots....

final fantasy 13 isn't that bad. it isn't x-2. its linear, but this is one fun combat system...and the story,though a bit complicated, its pretty solid, actually good imo though i can see why people won't like it.

Thread failed at MGS4.

Because fanboys try to convince others of the superiority of the game they like over every other game other people like, so they therefore sometimes (most times) end up over emblishing what the game can actually acheive in the real product vs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>what they hype it to be.

Remember at the beginning of the gen how oblivion (one of the first current gen games announced) was hyped? Man that game was awful in the final product IMO but they hype made is seem like you would never need to play another game again.

Because everyone knows that:

PS2 > PS3

XBOX > XBOX 360

and Wii > Gamecube

On another note TC if you really wanted to make an example of OVER-hyped games that didn't pan out, how could you forget FABLE?

Suggest: replace SSC (not hyped anywhere near the others) with Fable, better suits your argument.

never played it but from the reviews and what i've heard from PS3 Heads, that game is beyond brilliant.....pretty much like any other MGS game in existence

so sorry if i'm not gonna take ur word for it pal....

1. Unrealistic expectations 2. This is system wars and everything is either best ever or worst ever. If a game isn't the best ever it's going to catch a lot of flak 3. It's cool to be a hater...Senor_Kami

Whenever anything is hyped to the extent of Halo 3 or MGS4 there is going to be a substantial amount of people who are disappointed in the game. Why? Because they didn't truly know what to expect from the game and were simply riding the hype train that avid fans created. It's sad, but it's the truth.

To be honest, i'm finding small devs games to be more fun. Example: I bought Moun & Blade casue it was on sale a while back on steam and have played that game to death, graphics are meh, butOMG the gmaeplay beats alot of newer games by miles. And then the Mods.......wow. Amazing for a turkish dev team with only 6 employees.

I think that they are fine. If you stop looking at them for acclaim and start looking to them as just any other game you might feel differently.

because people have dumb unrealistic expectations, and then are angry when the sequel doesn't cure cancer too.

Like really... Halo 3? its your opinion but how high did u hype it that it was lower than your expectations? MGS4 got a 10 here... big big flop. etc
