Am I the only one who realizes how much potential they have? Look at the wii u. It could have been amazing. They had the IP, they had the new IP, they had the games, they had to developers. Then they literally crash themselves by adding a gimmick of a controller that drives up production costs, making them cut back on hardware. Cutting back on hardware made third party stop developing for them. Lack of third party made people stop buying. People stopped buying, making sales flop. Sales flopped so Nintendo started working on the nx, 3 years after the last console.

I don't get it, why do they do this to themselves. They have everything they need. Think about how amazing a Nintendo console with 3rd party support, current gen hardware, and a REAL online system would be. I just hope they don't screw the NX up

^ ^ This. I keep asking myself why they are so stubborn and this seems like the only reasonable answer. Either that or Nintendo is run by a bunch of morons.

I think it might be an effect of how the Japanese market is changing. They seem to have that as their main focus. In the west we loved what they were doing in the past but they are shifting away from consoles. The west isn't. They focus on Japan.

This is simply my uninformed impression of the situation.

It's taken them 20 months between putting Metroid Zero Mission on eShop in Japan to putting it on North American eShop. NoA won't put Fatal Frame on disc but will print a handful of Devil's Third in North America. They they've done two LoZ remakes fir Wii U and the next LoZ is gonna be an NX launch title. Giving 3DS early adopters free GBA games and not even creating GBA VC section for 3DS eShop. Yes, they're perplexing self sabotaging ruining them from reaching potential.

Really? Because them falling into the trap that is mobile gaming (you know, one of many "modern" things Nintendo needed to catch up on?) says otherwise.

I'll never understand this "lack of third party" thing.

Even without Third Party the Wii-U is the only console with a half decent library of games.

I don't really think its up to us to question their ways. We haven't been in business for over a hundred and thirty years. I think the instant we've been in business that long then we can question them.

@Big_Red_Button: I will never understand how you can just "deal" with a couple games a year. My wii u isn't touched unless people come over and we want to couch co-op. The fact that I can not play the best games of the year on my wii u, makes me wonder why I have one.

Oh god I don't own a Wii U, but Nintendo's first party games sure as heck beat Sony and Microsoft's crap and the usual shitty casual AAA games you get from Acti, Ubi and EA.

I can at least think of ten games on Wii U I'd like to play that I can't get anywhere else. I can't even think of five between PS4 and Xbone combined. There's Bloodborne and then...???

I don't get mad at Nintendo for the choices they make. I just hope they eventually make products I want to buy again. They got a buisiness to run and they got to cater to whomever they feel they need to. People are buying the hell out of the 3DS but it's not for me at all.

I hate Amibos. But look at how they sell. I know what I would like Nintendo to do but I'm not sure if that would equal them making money. Maybe Japan should nationalize Nintendo which would take the profit motivation out of the equation, make a monster of a console and sell it at a loss until all other companies are out of buisiness. Just kidding. That would be more like China.

I think its silly to expect Nintendo to be like Sony or Microsoft. Those two are enough like each other as is. Why would we need three consoles that play the same games? Why would we need more of the same?

People always seem to criticize Nintendo for being themselves, but when they get it right its magic. I'm glad Nintendo does their own thing because I don't think we need more generic online shooters, or open world crime games. While most developers are seeking ways to be more realistic, Nintendo does their own thing.

Realism in games to me is boring, I want fun. Mario Kart is a great racing series because its fun, not realistic, Smash Bros is a great fighting series because its fun, not realistic, Zelda and Metroid series are great adventures because they are fun, not realistic, etc, etc.

I heard a rumor that Star Fox is seeing development issues because of the motion controls of the game.

Nintendo understands that they're gimping themselves for the sake of being different!

Because it wouldn't be the same. Nintendo's games distinguish themselves; you really can't get more different from the flavor Nintendo's software offers in contrast to Sony/MS, and it wouldn't matter if they made them with a more traditional controller method or have some gimmick shoehorned in.

Making the same console as the others wouldn't have guaranteed third party support at all. Nobody wants to compete with Nintendo. You get a similar situation to PC ports. Some AAA developers will gladly miss out on millions by not supporting the PC properly because that supports their almost religious beliefs about that platform. That has only started changing several years ago and it still happens. Would they support a Nintendo console 'believing' that it won't sell as much? And Sony and MS offering 'exclusive' content to price others out of the business?

And Nintendo would have had to put in ads and ask for a monthly fee or their online wouldn't even have a chance to be as 'smooth' (I actually think XBLive and PSN are still pretty bad) so nobody would want to buy the multiplats on their console anyway, cutting off features for part of their audience who cannot pay the fee.

I think they will (have to) do that with the NX. Minus the ads maybe. But the idea that they didn't want to is really cool.

They are a very conservative Japanese focused company run by a bunch of out-of-touch old Men. They absolutely hate Western focused games as those games don't represent the type of content that Nintendo believes in. They have zero interest at all to get PS4/XB1 owners interested in their platforms because that means they would have to offer all those "Violent and Disturbing" video games that Nintendo hates so much.

I'll never forget this article. Really gives you an idea on how Nintendo views game content.

Still "your favorite company," right?

Besides that, fine. Not like PS4/XB1 owners ever had interest in what Nintendo has to offer anyway, nor do "Mature" gamers really care post-Rare buyout to Microsoft (sales of widely praised Eternal Darkness and Bayonetta 2 show this). Pretty much a Chicken-Egg relationship there.

I fail to see how Nintendo's current situation changes the fact that I play mostly on my Nintendo consoles, so yes Nintendo is my preferred video game company, just I prefer older Nintendo, not modern Nintendo. Its really not that difficult to understand how someone can both like and dislike a company at the same time.

I think Nintendo feels like it's too risky to directly compete against Microsoft and Sony. I believe Nintendo would rather survive by offering consumer products that no one has anywhere else.

I just think that people need to keep things in perspective. A company doesn't stay around since the 1800s without being adaptable and being good at being a business. It amazes me that people still act like Nintendo is dead and bankrupt when they're still posting profits and making money. They will be here long after we're all dead but it still doesn't stop people from acting like they know what's best for Nintendo.

Nintendo is run by old japanese executives entirely out of touch with the current trends in gaming, men refusing to let go or get the principle of "Nintendo always innovates" rolling in different ways, not just the hardware aspect of their gaming electronics, it's software where they're stronger. A regular, stand alone console, easy to develop for with little to no gimmicks on the hardware aspect would make them rich and perhaps dominate the market next generation.

They're still great with their games, but they need to do something about their hardware. The NX better be something special.

Nintendo always been about that "new" gameplay thing and so doing their own thing.

During the NES it was the revival of gaming, during the SNES it was the first controller with 6 boutons offering more option and introducing many new genre. on the N64 they bring on the table analog stick and rumble. on the NGC they tried link between the GBA and NGC. Wii was a motion control revolution and WiiU added a second screen just like they did with the DS.

The thing is during the N64 they had Sony as a new rival and many 3rd party exclusive went to Sony.

During the NGC, Microsoft bring PC games into the consol gaming for the first time as prior to this consol, not that many PC games came to consol, now it was a selling point.

Then Sony and Microsoft barely changed their controller which opened the door for multiplatform games on all 3 systems.

So in all, Nintendo never made a system to interest 3rd party developer. They made consol to play their own games. I'm sure they create the system and controller around what gameplay they want to develop instead of being a platform on which only graphics boost matter.

@paradocs: I agree, they understand they lost the core gamer long ago.

Wii U sold terrible because of it's high price point at the time (for what it offered), it's tablet controller gimmick, it's confusing and non-aggressive marketing, and the fact that Wii was only successful because of non-gamers. That demographic doesn't care to keep up to date with latest news and gaming consoles, so they'll be happy with their Wii forever

Are you kidding me? You think that hardcore gamers play Skyrim and Assassins Creed and shit? THOSE are kids games.

Nintendo makes family games. All of the Mario games have levels that are a shitload harder than anything in Fallout 4. You've got The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2, which are 10/10 action games compared to the heights of mediocrity that are Uncharted and Halo. There's the new DK games and stuff.

It's not much, but it's more than PS4 and Xbone. I guess I just like actual games and not glorified movies designed for teenagers.

I don't know, man, but I'm running out of patience here.

They're still great with their games, but they need to do something about their hardware. The NX better be something special.

It has to be or its just gonna end up selling as poorly as the Wii U.
