Why is the 360 so noisy compared to the ps3?

I love both my 360 and ps3 but I just hate the noise the 360 produces. Installing just takes too long

It needs plenty of cooling, that's for sure :P

Installing is fine on 360, it can take a while, but it really cuts down on noise. It's why I love my 120gb HDD.

Because the PS3 is made with an advanced form of highly classified stealth technology that is based on pieces found at the Roswell UFO crash, yet the 360 is made with pieces of a crashed 747 engine. Just kidding of course, though I could not resist. I am guessing it is the sort of fans used, not sure.

the 360's dvd drive is where the noise comes from. when playing a game off the hdd, there is little no no noise from the fans (at least from the jasper units).

360 might have smaller fans then the ps3. so they have to spin faster to produce the same cooling effect. also the PS3 only reads discs at about 4x speed. whereas the 360 dvd spins MUCH faster. that makes a little more noise.

then there's the design of the console. just the design of the 360 could amplify the noise.

actually the reason that the 360 costs less than the ps3 is because the technology in the 360 costs less to make. the blu-ray drive in the ps3 is still the biggest factor as to why the ps3 is still twice the cost of the competition.

And the standard wifi, bluetooth, HDD, wireless controllers, usb ports, and many other thing didn't drive up the cost at all right? Bluray is the biggest factor. But it isn't the only thing driving the cost up.

actually from a 2006 isuppli chart stating the costs of the individual components, the bd drive was the second most expensive component. the RSX was the most expensive. here's the chart:

granted the costs have come down but bd may still be among the most expensive, if not the most expensive component.

Because consoles aren't all built the same. Some require more heat reduction.

Because it has to work twice as hard to pump out 720p. I play all my 360 games from the hard drive and its still loud. Thats my theory.djsifer01

a dvd spinning at 12x is a lot louder than a br spinning at 2x thats why.

Actaully the benq and liteon drive that have shipped in the 360 for the past 1-2 years are pretty quiet anyway compare to the old ones

ms doesnt really care what happens after you buy the console. they break down, are noisy, and aren't as well made overall. And M$ overprices the accesories by a ton. usually you can get a ps3 accesory equal to or greater for a atmost a half of the price of the 360 accesory
