[QUOTE="Jynxzor"]If you couldn't find a slew of games that appealed to you on the PS2 then something is wrong with you.nameless12345

That's like saying something is wrong with someone because he doesn't like console games. Sounds like stereotyping to me.

Let me rephrase this, if you played console games and couldn't find a slew of games that would appeal to your tastes on the PS2 then something is wrong with you, no other system could even compare. Hell the PC didn't even have as strong a lineup of consistant quality releases like the PS2. There was always something around the corner, something new coming out, something to play. PS2 has something for everybody, if you didn't like the PS2 for whatever reason *Price maybe* then that was your problem not the systems, it had games for you wether you want to admit it or not.

Well, I know the Dreamcast gave the PS2 a run for it's money when the PS2 came out. Later when the DC died and PS2 started getting actually good games things changed, of course.

nameless12345

not really, the dreamcast didnt have a few 3rd parties behind it, especialyl one that is considered the biggest aka EA.

Launch PS2 titles included the first SSX,Tekken Tag tourney (a highly rated game both by fans and critics),Smugglers run,DoA2,Ridge Racer V.Which tbh looking back is a fair shot better than this gens offerings minus the wii's trump card Twilight princess.

All of those didn't live up to the hype. Or better said - only people who thought "PS2 is god" believed the PS2 wiped away the other systems in game quality.

thing is it did :S i owned an Xbox and a PS2 last gen i think im well qualified to comment on a lot of things.

Fantastic Third and First Party support, some of the best may I add. It may not have been the best graphics wise, but it's certainly makes up for that game wise. Plus it wasn't that expensive.Lexter45

At the same time GT3 was considered the benchmark for last gen which was on the PS2.Also Splinter cell was on the PS2 aswell and one of the most praised platformers early last gen was Jak and the precursor legacy which is one of my all time favourite games aswell.

At metacritic and on gamespot,Gt3 could be considered the benchmark for console simulation games last gen...sorry but somone has to put your babbling and derivative self in thei place.

razgriz_101

GT3 was only the "benchmark" untill GT4 came out. But still Forza on the Xbox had features GT4 didn't have (i.e. online play, visible damage, ect.). Splinter Cell was on the PS2 but the PS2 got the inferior version. Compare Chaos Theory on Xbox to PS2 version - there's no comparison. PS2 was strong for platformers, yes, but at the same time I don't feel the PS2 platformers just wiped away all other platformers. Mario Sunshine, Conker and Stranger's Wrath were all very good GC and Xbox platformers.

At the same time GT3 was seen as the biggest LEAP forward

That's because it had much better graphics. The amount of cars was actually smaller than GT2.

And I don't know why saying that Spliter Cell was much better on the Xbox isn't an argument for it.

After all, multiplats count too or don't they?

TC, you trying to convince everyone the Xbox is a better system then the world changing PS2, doesn't make it so. If you have to bring out the "games are subjective" argument when the main source of its praise is the sheer amount of quality titles, then you may as well as the Colecovision is the best system ever for having games you like.

It would be dumb, but it would fit with your argument.

Not that the DC was a bad system mind you. Always felt it was under-appreciated. But it gave no one a run for the money, as you put it, once there was anything to compete with.

No it wasnt :S there was an overhaul of the physics engines aswell...its quite apparent aswell if you play 2 and 3 side by side.

And im curious why do you intend on posting topics like these aswell every single day as essentially troll bait and proceed to be schooled by people on here.

In what ways was it so "world changing" ?

A lot of the stuff the PS2 did I already seen prior to it on the Dreamcast.

And I feel the Xbox did more for the console gaming than PS2 too.

The sheer volume of JRPGs. Back when I actually liked the genre for more then SRPGs it felt like a quality JRPG was hitting every month.

Dreamcast has an extremely limited and very focused time of games, and people try and play that as some upper hand card. But in reality the DC comes nowhere close to the PS2 and actually a few dreamcast games ended up being canned or moved to PS2 aswell.Or in the case of some sega games ported over.

if it hadn't destroyed it in terms of gaming then the DC would've lasted longer. I liked some DC games, i have fond memories of sonic and house of the dead, but as far as gaming goes it didn't take long for the ps2 to get a lot of excellent games consistently.

It destroyed it because of hype, not because it was "ten times stronger" (or what ever).

Of course it did. The PS2 has one of the most highly rated libraries of any console, ever. The Dreamcast had some fantastic games, but it wasn't around long enough to garner nearly as many.

I'm fine with you preferring a different system, but there's really no arguing against why the PS2 gets the amount of praise it does in the gaming world. Simply too many great games to ignore.

it's easy to understand really it had great software. For you it may have not been so great or just soso but for millions and millions the softwares was amazing. you can name Forza all you want but millions more prefered gt. There was a lot of games in almost every genres. You may think mario sunshine was better then r&c some will agree with you, others don't.

to make really simple just because you didn't like something or you think something is better doesn't mean everyone agrees with you.

How exactly did the games your mention "push the limits of gaming" ?

GT3 and 4 were just GT in better graphics, GoW 1 & 2 were actually less complex than Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox and MGS 2 & 3 were just MGS in better graphics (imo).

nameless12345

There weren't better driving sims than GT. GoW was still better than ninja gaiden. There weren't better platformers than R&C, Sly and Jak. Splinter cell was declining by the time MGS3 came out. Your point?

There was Forza on the Xbox which, according to some, is the better driving sim. Whether GoW or NG is better is a matter of taste. Maybe those platformers were the most praised but I personally think Mario Sunshine came close to them. And some consider the Spliter Cell games to be better than the MGS games.

Jesus dude. Forza didn't come out until 2005. The XBOX was dead by then. The worst Metal Gear is better than the best Splinter Cell. What's your point>?

He has a point - PS2 was weak for FPSes. And KillZone didn't nearly live up to it's "Halo killer" premise. Perhaps only in the eyes of fans.

Because it had an enormous game library. PS2 was the only console on which I had backlog of games. Gamecube and Xbox had pretty damn good game libraries(GC moreso than xbox imo) but the PS2 just blew them away. That and the PS2 controller was the best.

There was Forza on the Xbox which, according to some, is the better driving sim. Whether GoW or NG is better is a matter of taste. Maybe those platformers were the most praised but I personally think Mario Sunshine came close to them. And some consider the Spliter Cell games to be better than the MGS games.

nameless12345

Jesus dude. Forza didn't come out until 2005. The XBOX was dead by then. The worst Metal Gear is better than the best Splinter Cell. What's your point>?

Nice opinion but I don't agree.

What? that wasn't my opinion. That was a fact. And its pathetic how you need to combine GC exclusives, XBOX exclusives AND multiplats to compare against the PS2, and are still using. Perhaps if you add in the PC you might have a better library than the PS2...

Because of the sheer scope of its library. It's like the SNES of polygonal gaming. Along with the N64 and the aforementioned SNES, it is undoubtedly one of the greatest gaming systems of all time.

It never got a good FPS, so it definitely did not appeal to me. The hardly better than dreamcast graphics were also something to complain about. I thought the GC and xbox had more must have games for me. The only game I really enjoyed on the Ps2 was MGS3.

nameless12345

Black? Timesplitters?

He has a point - PS2 was weak for FPSes. And KillZone didn't nearly live up to it's "Halo killer" premise. Perhaps only in the eyes of fans.

To me timesplitters 2 was miles better then Halo, but killzone did really sucked

I noticed that as well, like teaming up against the PS2 is an instant win for all other consoles of last gen.

Sure thing. Just as it's a fact that the PS2 is over-rated system and that it's competition was better in many ways :P

Did it really wipe-away the competition and all the other consoles in game quality and variation? nameless12345

Yes, absolutely.

Was it really so far ahead of it's time? Did it bring unprecedented technical improvement?nameless12345

Not really, but regardless.

As far as I remember, the console was nothing to rave about when it came out. It had jaggy and flickering graphics, poor game line-up and was expensive.

Things changed with time and I admit the console has seen some great games, but at the same time I still don't quite get it why it was so unquestionably superior to the other consoles. I mean and the competition offered some damn good games too.

nameless12345

Because it offered just that many more great games. As for graphics, it wasn't as advanced as GC or Xbox but developers progressively made better and better use of the hardware, and the result was many of the best looking games of the generation.

Beats me. If you didn't like jrpgs, and had access to other platforms, I didn't see what was so great about it.

So give me some reasons why I should prefer GT4 over Forza, GoW 2 over Ninja Gaiden Black, Ratchet & Clank over Conker, Shadow of Colossus/ICO over Wind Waker/Twilight Princess, MGS 3 over Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, ect. Well?

Why would I waste time comparing a few single games? If you didn't like GoW you had umpteen other great action games waiting to be picked up on the PS2, if you didn't like GT you had umpteen racing games to be picked up.

You didn't like Shadow of the Colosussus/Ico? Oh please....

Metal Gear versus Splinter cell...well if I didn't like Metal Gear I'd just get splinter cell on my Ps2.

Who said the other systems didn't have great games? Gamecube and Xbox had some awesome titles, but neither could compare the the sheer library the PS2 brought to the table. Like I said no matter your tastes there would be something on the PS2 for you. Xbox? Not so much.

Yes, absolutely.

But how do you measure game quality? By looking at critic scores and reading other's opinions or... ?

Yet again some sensless stereotyping. You can't say someone MUST like the mentioned games. It's my taste after all, not yours.

I don't know... maybe by playing the games and deciding for yourself?

Most of which the PS2 catered for, since as you clearly pointed out you would require a Gamecube, Xbox and Dreamcast to equal the PS2 library, and you ask why it was so praised?
