3 franchise decide weither or not a console succed in Japan.
1/Dragon Quest
2/Pokemon
3/Final Fantasy
At the moment the PSP has FF7 Crisis Core, DS doesn't have a recent FF,pokemon,DQ, nor does wii. But I'm pretty sure once FF4 comes out the sales will raise.
I'm sure they'll pick up again once SMG and FFIV are released. At the moment, they're all going crazy for Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.Cactuar_Scott
I wouldn't be surprised if they were holding some supplies so that they would have more for the holiday sales.
5 out of 6 children own a DS in Japan.
Wii, well... Don't know. Mario Galaxy comes in less than one month BTW. Mario Sunshine spiked GC sales 287% on the first week.

Or maybe, finaly every single japanese gamer owns a DS :O
Many people have already purchased the systems... I heard something like 1 in 6 people in Japan have a DS or DS Lite...cfamgcn
Actually I think its 1 in 4 people...
@ OP.
the DS has been outnearly3 years now (3 years! i know its hard to believe myself!) so its probably starting to hit market saturation- the DS Lite rocketed sales back in '06 when it launched- & now most ppl probly already have either a DS or DS Lite.
With regards to the Wii- its probably down to lack oftitles- right now there's just not that many AAA games- they are on the way so i expect that will boost sales- so will Xmas aswell.(they do have Xmas in Japan i think)

That may be true, but they don't all own a Wii.
If i recall the PSP sold so well this month because of Crisis Core and the limited edition PSP's. There were 77,777 and all of them sold out. They were very cool looking.
Other then that here is the common sense for the rest of your post.
PSP 128000
DSL 72000
Wii 25000
PS2 13000
PS3 13000

So if 12800 PSP's were sold 77,777 of them being promo offers then you would clearly see that the PSP numbers are exactly were they should be around 70k for a big game release. The other reason that ALL console sales are down is this is thee time were everyone goes back to school, things will be picking up for everyone back to regular sales levels in OCT and the start of November, I would expect monstrous sales for Wii in Japan and 360 in NA along side Mega NA Wii sales.
Truth is 40 million plus DS's already sold. 20 million PSP's and the PSP is now under 200$ so its at that great point of " I am consumer I will buy thing under 200$ *Robot noise* " So i think the PSP may just start selling well.
2nd truth is those number probably aren't on the button and when the Wii is selling almost as much as the 360, ps2 and ps3 combined in the slower part of the year, you know there not doing bad. All and all summer isnt the time to sell consoles neither is september where the world goes back to school. October Nov and December are all right around the corner and as far as i can see the Wii is a mach one Jet racing 2 Jetta's there just may be no contest.

according to vgchartz, ds has sold 19.48m units in japan
according to google, japan has a population of 127,433,494
thats 15.29% of the population, so... yeah, i think just about everyone who wants one, has one..

Because Sunshine sold terribly compared too ther Marios. The ONLY Mario to not break 1 million in Japan, or 10 million worldwide.
New Super Mario Bros. sold 5 million copies in Japan alone. I expect Galaxy to do similar, if not better numbers.
