I think the Wii is doing so well because it has a good price, it has ok graphics, it is for allot more than video gaming, the control system is inventive, and it has a wide selection of games. Though the PS3 is a great system, the good version was overpriced, It has less of a selection of games, and is for the more hard core gamers. The xbox360 is like the PS3 but better priced, however, there was the overheating problem. That's why the Wii is doing so well.

The Wii is doing well because it appealed to the Nintendo fanbase and then heavily captured the imaginations of the casual market

I pretty much agree. I might add that it seems like most of the audience that went to the PS2 seems to be turning up on the Wii.

It's the price, the controller and the endless amount of shovelware.

Nope to all of you. The price is definately a factor, but it is bacause of innovation people. Other people are sick of playing videogames with button mashing and they introduced motion control. It hs a new angle on all fighting games and provides to please casual and hardcore gamers alike. Now watch, next year the Playsation 4 and the XBOX 720 are going to copy Nintendo and then Nintendo's new heads will make something even newer and better. tHat is the way it wwas even from the original NES and SNES days. After Nintendo made th better system than the Atari, thenm Sony, Microsft, and even Sega for a short period copied them. So it all adds up to new innovation and price tags. as long as what type of games u are looking for.

When it launched it was dirt cheap compared to everything else. Also, Nintendo's huge amount of fanboys went out and bought it immediatly. Little kids got it because the control scheme was easy for them to pick up and was cheap, and they didn't really care about online play yet. All the people on the fence about buying a console had a cheaper alternative and something that is fun at parties (even I admit that waving the Wiimote around with 3 other people is kinda fun). It just appealed to most people and sold very well.

For the same reason Four Christmases and Twilight are at the top of the box office now.
For the same reason the top hits are 99% of the time terrible.

Easy, understandable stuff sells a lot.

It's doing well because it's afforadable and really appeals to non-gamers. I think Nintendo did a good job tricking everyone,.

Tricking? It didn't take a genius at Nintendo HQ for them to figure out the majority of people who buy games are casuals. they know casuals love things like the wii

affordability as a factor went out the window when the gc failed to surpass the competition

it's like asking why guitar hero is so successful.. don't think too hard or you'll hurt yourself

it's about bringing simple concepts to life with interactivity

this must have been what the people who never got tetris were like back in the day "but its blocks! wheres the story!"

it's like having a home arcade.. and it's no surprise the most successful arcades here generally consist of nongamers who are drinking while enjoying pick up and play games

it's not about competition or training, it's about fun.. it opens up a level playing field

Why not just say the general public ? They way you say it makes it sound like its bad that old people, women, and little kids enjoy it. Like they are not allowed to enjoy gaming, makes you sound like a gaming elitist.

You don't become a gamer. You are either born a gamer or not. And what were they before they became gamers? Check out this pic:

it's a gaming console that appeals to non-gamers, and lets face it, there are more people who are not gamers than people who are. typically, the age of gamers is between 12-30, that's about an 18 year span. Well, the wii is appealing to people from age 4-12, 8 year span, and 30-death, which is a good 30 year span at least. I mean seriously, senior citizens are being reported in the newspaper as setting up wii bowling leagues. and of course kids, who have never played games before, are going to be attracted to the ease and accessibility of these less complicated games like mariokart, mario galaxy, and all of the cheaply made titles that draw children's eyes like m&m racing, mario and sonic at the olympics, and chicken shoot. the 360 and ps3 are appealing to core gamers, those of us who want graphics that push the technology we have constantly, we want solid controls, good stories, a challenge, we want solid and competetive multiplayer, we want to be immersed, and we certainly dont want to feel like children playing mario and sonic at the olympics. we expect more from our games and a gimmick like the wii doesnt appeal to us, unfortunatly however, this gimmick does interest the people who are not gamers, and they have the numbers over us games. this is why the wii has suceeded, it is appealing to a broader audience than the 360 and ps3.

Ok I've hear some good opinions and some bad ones. The guy with the huge pharagraph was right exept for the fact that the Wii is bringing in the hardcore gamers. It snagged alot with Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess. Tp was a good game but the graphics STANK! Nintendo needs to work harder on games. I hope they don't make the next zelda as annoying as Wind Waker. Great game, good story, but I get bored trying to get the triforce shards and restart. I still haven't beat the game.

I'm gonna say this once. Gamers before they were gamers either played with legos, there friends, or watched tv. When they got older they read books. I got a play station very young but I still enjoy a good book. (Some directors should be arrested for butcherring Harry Potter when the books went to movie!) If you say I'm not a true gamer give me your brawl code and I'll tear you appart!

Atari came before Nintendo. The Gamecube was no where near as great as PS2. Nintendo only changed the controls and not the gameplay at the cost of horse power so no innovatiton. Lastly, Wii is for casuals. I have a Wii and its just boring. Yeah hardcore my ass. Nintendo is NOT the creator of video games.Sorry but you seem to sound as if Sega and Sony never released kickass systems
