That console came out over a year ago and it's still sold out. I work at Best Buy and we only get them in once a month. About 15 or so and they sell out within a few days because no one else has any for sale.

Why is Nintendo intentionally bleeding the market dry?

Supply cannot keep up with demand. Simple as that.

Dunno really, by now one would think there shouldn't be any manufacturing troubles. And yet nintendo still doesn't supply enough... :?

Supply will never keep up with demand if the supply is too low.

It seems the manufacturing problems still persist since Nintendo isn't used to such heavy demand. Couple that with the fact there was never a downtime that they could stock Wiis away in warehouses like Microsoft and Sony could do with their Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Its not easy to get a steady supply when the demand has been higher than the supply since launch.

Wii is a worldwide success and Nintendo isn't as big or MS and Sony so they can't produce as many machines. I guess...

Yeah something is up, I have a feeling that theyll let a flood of wiis come out with BRAWL in March. Why else would they be doing this? Not enough supply to meet demand is bull crap, nintendo has plenty of money- I think they are just preparing for the gameing in March

They produce 1,8 million a month. That's a lot no?

They will propably ship more copies in the US with Brawl coming out.

That's a silly statement. Why on earth would Nintendo withhold units to its customers? That defies logic. It is in Nintendo's best interest to sell as many units to as many customers as possible. While they make a nice profit off of consoles, a large userbase will ultimately yield more revenue than just the console alone. With each console sold, customers will buy games, of whose profits some goes to Nintendo.

If you think that Nintendo is creating an artificial demand, you apparently do not understand much about the market.

there are obvious reasons for nintendo to keep the supply low

1. to make it seem like the wii is still the most desired console on market

2. to justify the comparitivly high price for this piece of low grade tech

3. to ensure steady sales - no flooding of the market

bottom line to max out profit - just like any smart buisness would do, take advantage of leading position

Sigh... You don't have to pretend when your product IS the most desired console on the market. It's by far the cheapest console on the market. Call me when Sony and/or MS regularly outsell the Wii. Then we can talk about not supplying enough products to the market.

no doubt that wii wii has sold a lot of units since it has been released- no doubt there are a lot of people who have a wii or are in varied degrees interested in getting one - i am one of them - the point is that nintendo would like to sell as many as possible and rightly so, there are many ways of keeping a good rolling and denying a wanting market it s supply is one of them

With all respect, based on what? Business theory and history shows that this strategy doesn't work outside of large-ticket, status-symbol items that people purchase to prove they're successful. And even then it decreases sales, not increases them. If Nintendo is employing such a strategy, and I see no evidence to suggest they are, then their management needs to be fired.

The Wii is not a luxury item. The tactic of restricting supply don't work for electronics. People would just get tired of waiting and buy another alternative, of which there are plenty.

Bingo, I would have bought a Wii already if nintendo wasn't horribly failling at making more consoles.

They ARE hurting themselves by not making more.

That might work at in the beginning, but over a year into the console's life? I don't think so. The trick would be to keep the customers baited enough for them to hold out on the Wiis without losing interest. By now, with media exposure, casual appeal, etc., that strategy is useless. The opportunity cost is too high for Nintendo NOT to increase production.

This is an issue of supply and demand.

Supply will never keep up with demand if the supply is too low.

The Wii supply is larger than that of any current or past console. Its supply is not low, it is in fact unprecedentedly and record-breakingly high. However, it is still not a match for the even more impressively record-breaking demand.

Nintendo is upsing the same market strategy as apple is with the iPhone. Control the quantity supplied to maintain the price. The worst thing that can happen is an over-abundance the a product in a market.

B Squared laughes at the people who say Nintendo is sending out short supplies. I mean you do realize the Wii is outselling the competition by a large margin don't you? If Nintendo was restricting shipments then that makes it worse for you haters. I mean a supply shortened system destroying the competition lol.
