I and many people, are wondering, why there is so much hate towards certain gaming series? I am just asking why. I miss the days when there wasn't too much hate like the NES days where gaming was a little bit more peacful. For example, I have recieved much hate for the fact that I own an Xbox 360.

Have you ever been a victim of this gaming hatred? Or do you know why it happens?

dunno, this generation gaming as a whole has been filled with hatred, but it isn't anything new, there's hatred between the SNES and Sega Genesis fans, there's hatred between the ZX spectrum and Commodore 64 fans, between the Atari ST, Amiga and PC fans, between the 3DO and Jaguar fans (yes, 'im serious), and there's hatred in this gen as well. people like to think that they chose the best system and as a result will insult those who think diferently, it kinda reminds me of sports fanboys rooting for their hometeams

The hate's always been there. It's just that now, we have the internet to broadcast all that hate.

As with anything, you can choose to let it get to you or you can ignore it and focus on what you like. I choose the latter.

I'm a little sour because everything this generation seems to be an FPS title. The amount of sequels (and number of franchises that have them) is also pretty ridiculous. JRPGs for the most part have been non-existent on current platforms (not counting handhelds) compared to the two previous generations. This generation I think is just filled with a lot more disappointment overall when compared to last. Of course, the grass is always greener...

Basically everyone thinks they're right and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong/an idiot. The internet just amplifies that.

I don't feel strong enough about games to "hate" them, but the reason I dislike the trend I'm seeing in game development today is that it is moving in a direction away from the type of games I enjoy. The preferences of other gamers are actually harming my own gaming experience.

With music for example, I can just listen to an endless selection of jazz, fusion, prog metal, classical, folk, etc. while being completely unaffected by the current horrible trends in the music industry. The same can basically be said for movies as the artform has been around for a century.

I can say that I'm quite sour with this gen. Incomplete games at full price, overpriced DLC that were supposed to be content in the game at release, DLC almost everywhere, a sequel like almost each year or two...

There are more kids playing games these days, thus the level of video game discussion plummets.

Content being withheld at launch just to put it up as DLC. Makes me upset just thinking about it.

Cognitive dissonance. Once you choose one console over another, people want to feel they made the right choice. So they begin to rate their own choice more favourably, and the competitor less favourably. This happens unconsciously most of the time. It happens with everything, but the effect is often stronger it a large amount of money involved. Consoles are expensive, so the effect is pretty strong here. Also, people are generally more brutal and honest when they feel anonymous (such as on the internet) so that's why you're seeing what your seeing.

I don't really hate any game series or game system, I just say what I don't like. The fanboy hate is nothing new. Infact I think the most intense console wars were in the early 90s between Sega and Nintendo. Nothing really comes close to that.

Well, I don't think it's hatred as much as going on the defense. As others have said, it's mostly just based on defending your purchase. I think ohthemanatee had it right when referring to people rooting for their sports teams. We are at each others throats to defend our favorite teams, but when it comes down to it, we will stick together for the greater good (Like over the whole "violent video games" BS). It's just a sub-culture. We all have our preferences, but we are also all gamers. I'm sure some of the less mature people are actually in it just for their console, but I personally am in it for gaming. In the face of governments trying to ban games, I will stand hand in hand with wii owners, 360 owners, fellow PS3 owners, hell even iPhone and other handheld gamers. I would say PC gamers, but they never leave the house :P (just kidding hermits :)) So yeah. Don't take the hate personally. Deep down inside, we are all alike. we are all gamers.

lol? Which NES days were you living in? Back then I was a kid and everyone either had a NES/SNES or MS/Genesis and there was a lot of hate between the systems, even ads oiled the fire oO There was just no internet to make it visible for everyone. Now I'm a young aduld, owning every console and I while I do critic things like the fee to play online on the x360 as well as games I didn't like ... as long as I played them and I have a realistic critic. But while some like me got older, there are others that still just own one system and they do everything to defend their choice. While I made fun of Mario to get big by eating poissioned mushrooms, others do it by hating the exclusives of this gen :S

Hehe , you are too young to remember.... This "war" is tooooo old... Atari st 1040 vs Amiga 500 ( oldschool gamers know what i mean ) NES vs MAster sustem SNES vs Genesis BIG RIVALS... Even in arcades there were such rivalry like Street Fighter 2 VS mortal kombat , or Tekken VS Virtua fighter etc etc I think is nice to have rivals in a "good and friendly" way. Just for the fun. But i get what you mean , some "kids" take it to another level and its annoying. But in the end , even if we "fight" for games i bet most of us in here if we had a chance to meet in real life , probably we would have been friends , drink some beer and play some games ... and have fun.

When the majority of people are exposed to certain things, this case gaming it opens pandoras box which is filled with kids, people who have anger issues and elitists.

I truely miss when being a gamer was not as "exposed" as it is today.

What about people who have every platform, though? What dissonance is pressing us to argue?

I didn't say dissonance is the only cause. It's just the biggest one. I actually own all consoles, and I will occasionally get into a mild debate about consoles. I don't express any hate and I don't get abusive. But he wasn't asking why we argue, he's asking why we hate. And those of us who own all consoles are not likely to hate any of them. Otherwise, why would we have purchased them? But these peopledo exist of course. Maybe they just discovered they hated the console after purchasing it. Maybe it was given to them as a gift. The explanations are virtually endless, but in my first post, I went with the biggest one.

Entertainment media tend to generate a lot hate. It's just the nature of the business. I think it's because we tend to focus on entertainment more, whether it's a movie or book or game, so we tend to notice the little flaws. And since games are very complex, small and large flaws are more frequent. I also think the way console users and PC users are divided into factions helps to serve up the hate.

And many of your friends put lots of hate towards other gaming systems. I guess it's just a lot of new genres are being introuduced and some people like it and some don't.

Alot of gamers are obsessive and spoiled. If every game isn't their favorite then it's awful to them and they'll be especially angry about it if the game they dislike is popular/successful and they aren't willing to see it any other way.

I don't believe in that one bit. If I buy a console that ends up sucking, I'm gonna sell the POS and sing songs of hatred towards it. Not lie and try to justify my purchase of it.

Or do you know why it happens?

imo this has nothing to do with gaming , if you were on a different forum you would get hate for having adidas sneakers or driving a honda car. Some people will hate you no matter what , they will find a reason. Such individuals have problems and it makes them feel better to hate and diss you , the internet "anonymity" increases this behaviour also much because in real life they wouldnt probably have the guts to tell you the same face to face.

people don't usually get crap for the games they like, trash talking usually occurs when someone is vocal about a game they don't like

It's pretty sad that some people spend more time bashing other platform players then actually playing games on their platform(s) of choice.

There's a lot of hate in the world in general.. so it's suffice to say it will happen in gaming or anything.. But why pay attention to it? I don't.. waste of time. Back to gaming. :P

Anonymity breeds asshats who just want to spread their ignorance. Ignore it and have fun.

This. However the asshats are becoming more prominent.
