I think it will be mainly for menu navigation and such like. Microsoft have the new Kinect with fancy voice recognition and tech to use for such things. I guess this is $ony's response to that and is the best they could come up with while having such limited funds to work with :?
I thought touch-screens were gimmicks that the "core" (aka Sony's target audience on the PS4) hated?
Or am I wrong...
jakes on you...Nextbox controller will be you moving awkwardly in your small apartment to Halo: kinect wars
It's because the UI mirrors that of touch devices (smartphones, tablets, etc) and the VITA for remote play and second screen gaming.Â
Â
Sony basically leave that stream up to gamers to decide where they want to have it (be on their iphone, VITA, etc).
Jakes never on me Pal, you might but ol' jack don't swing that way. The 360 pad is the GOAT ms will never drop it or add it with gimmicks and a blue smiley face.jakes on you...Nextbox controller will be you moving awkwardly in your small apartment to Halo: kinect wars

I dont want a touch screen or a touch pad. The touch pad doesnt even make sense to me. Whats it for? I cant even think of a single good reason to have it/use it. Im glad the PS4 controller didnt go to far from the classic iconic PS controller tho.Nengo_Flow
Try using the internet browser mouse with the analog sticks on the PS3, then try using a touchpad controlled mouse on a laptop. There is your answer why it will be a good thing for the PS4. Alot of new apps and social features will probably need better mouse pointer control.Â
If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Crowding the controller with gimmicks isn't going to help gaming. The "share" button is already completely useless to me personally, but I'm sure some people will actually use it. The touchpad is a welcome addition though, especially for web browsing.
MS new controller - Kinect
ImBatman-
I would reserve judgement on this till the official specs are released, though admittedly it isn't looking promising.
Even if they get Kinect 2.0 to work PERFECTLY, I still wouldn't want it. I play games to relax after a hard day of work/school, not wave my arms around like an idiot.

Also I wonder how they will incorporate it into games it could be good for some games; Also it is a button because the touchpad on the PS4 controller looks like you can push it in like the analog sticks.[QUOTE="Nengo_Flow"]I dont want a touch screen or a touch pad. lol the PS3 web browser? I only use that the first two years i had my Ps3 to watch porn and some anime. Im not into anime anymore, and I barely got time for porn. Why would I ever need to use a web broswer on a console? The touch pad is actually good. Think of it as a laptop mouse.... on your controller. not a bad idea at all.MBirdy88That is basically what it is Laptops use touchpads instead of mice (I think that should be the plural of a computer mouse)

Â
Idea isn't bad but will the games actually use it smartly?
I mean, it could make games that require precision (i.e. FPS, RTS, simulation, ect.) much more enjoyable on consoles but I kinda doubt they will use it to that extent...

Who cares? if it adds functionality to using a console more inline with a PC it really doesn't matter. The touch pad is actually good. Think of it as a laptop mouse.... on your controller. not a bad idea at all.MBirdy88
Oh yes.
And I just imagine the accuracy, and precision of a laptop touchpad....... *shudders* :P
Â
To save money on production.
The cost to add a small, HD screen to the PS4 controler could very well double production cost with little added benefit from a screen so Small.
They would have to completely redesign the controller (a la Wii U) to take advantage of a touch screen.

Â
Those things are good enough for browsing and selecting. And (in my experience) the touchpads last way longer than regular buttons. regular buttons can fall off or get less clicky over time.Â

Apple/Mac pads are rather great.

Â
Not really. VITA has it and VITA is considered a core gamer device by Sony.Â

Why would I ever need to use a web broswer on a console?Exacly, it sucks and I haven't used it myself for like three years. The point is that they probably will want you to use your PS4 for alot more things, things that like you mention the PS3 has failed to deliver. Imagine a browser that works with mouse control that is good enough on your big screen TV, combined with gestures, like zoom in and out on a smartphone. My point is that it could have intresting uses that might help the OS navigation.Â
If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Â
The "share" button is useless?Â
Â
. . . I see your avy and Fallout is one IP I would love to have the share button for. If I die in the world somewhere and need to retrace my steps; I can literally just push a button and see the footage of what happened. Instead of depending on my crappy, short term, photographic memory of what happened, I can just hit that "share" button and look at the film that was recording my in-game moves. Sports athletes get better at their craft by looking at film, so it makes sense to me to have my own footage to look at.
Â
Also, that touchpad took up real estate that wasn't being used in the first place.

Even if it's simple hand gestures? (i.e. pointing a finger at the kinect and slightly flicking your wrist to scroll)

Have a good day, bro. :)
I prefer the touchpad. Â It's an option that can be implemented into games/system functions but is not forcing developers' creative direction any which way.

Yeah so that people would whine about Sony not being innovative.hiryu3whats so innovative about a touch pad vita already has lol  some one didnt eat their  wheaties
DS4 is probably the best gamepad to date.Â
The small touchpad gives you additional inputs, but not so much that it alienates the old school way of playing games.Â
Yeah so that people would whine about Sony not being innovative.hiryu3So they're going with a pointless track pad that's hardly going to have any game support? It's just like the sixaxis. How are they going to implement Killzone with it? Just no inspiration at all with this one... People were calling the gamepad gimmicky, which is far from true, the PS4 track pad is gimmicky in the worse way possible, I don't see that getting hate.
