Why not games developed to cover Current gen and Next gen on a single disk?

I saw an article on Gamespot on how developers don't want to jump on a new console because it's customer base is small and they would rather stay on PS3/360 customer base of 50 Million each respectivably for better sales.

And then I got to thinking of Epic games and their Dev kits for UDK4 and how they scale beautifully or something. Why not make a game that runs great on PS3/360 and if you insert that same disc in the PS4/720 it has different sets of textures and improved particles/lighting and AI?

Just a thought.

wut? Anyways, thats wat having a good first party circle benefits you. Sony can get their first party to start making PS4 exclusives instead of worrying about convincing 3rd party devs to please make next gen games on the new system.

to my knowledge there's only one game that actually did that. Shantae for the Gameboy color if you played it on the GBA the game's graphics would improve a little

Nice thought, but lighting an AI is all coded in the game's engine. You'd have to create two different versions of the game for each platform and then fit both of them on a dvd, which the 360 uses. farrell2k
I don't think it's as hard as all that imagine you want to make Deus Ex 4, make the 360 your main system, but if you play it on an xbox 720 then it ups the resolution to 1080p. it's actually not a bad idea

Because they'd have to create 2 versions of the game and that would make the costs go up.

if you're going to make a 360 and a 720 version you're already making two versions of the same game

There are plenty of games from the late 90s - mid 2000s that were a dual pc/mac disc.

yeah but those are PCs that's different

a lot of Pc games still do that

but on consoles it's not really common

That's...quite the interesting idea. It would certainly make the next gen transition a heck of a lot easier.

Cover both gens - if the developer can do this and it will be economically viable for them (Battlefield 3 or 4 type games prime candidates?) then why not.

Single disc - good for the consumer. Publisher probably wants to sell the game twice if possible, putting two versions on one disc would prevent this.

Covering multiple gens would probably be a smart idea for ~1yr after the new console comes out.

First wave of next gen games will most likely be cross gen. The next gen version would be 1080p, have more aa, af and better overall graphics. Kind of like pc versions of games are now. Wouldnt be surprised if they have cross gen mp on games like COD so you can still play with friends who havent upgraded yet.

With higher res textures there may not be enough space on a single dvd.

Yeah, but if resolution was the only difference between the current and next-gen version.. that'd be a pretty sh!tty next gen version.

Well, that's under the assumption you are doing it (kinda like LOZ:TP) but I don't remember many titles that have done so.

It's simple. Consoles aren't PCs, and console games aren't developed for two different configurations of hardware. The only reason it's possible to pull some of the things console exclusives are doing nowadays on 7 years old hardware is because that hardware is fixed. Before even suggesting something that "runs great on PS3/360" and "has different sets of textures and improved particles/lighting and AI" on PS4/720, look at the state of backward compatibility first.

it seems like it would be more work in order to make a better product, although a change that would give them less money at least in the short term. It might make sense in the long term to promote the console and the software but if it backfires somebody's getting fired.

Then what would be the point of getting the newer consoles if you can already play them now?

Neither company is going to risk that.

The console owners would never allow it. Even if they did, consoles use different disk formats and mastering processes. Plus you typically have content processing pipelines that output different versions of all of your assets for each platform. For instance on Xbox 360 you'll probably compress normal maps to the special format supported by that GPU, while on PS3 you'll stick with DXT5.

I'm not so sure about that. It's not unlike Sony's Cross-Buy program for the PS3/Vita: if a PS3 owner already has a bunch of games that are not only compatible-with but improved on the PS4, that's a pretty good incentive to stick with Sony instead of jumping ship to MS/Nintendo when he upgrades. You'd just have to use DD for the next-gen version(also not exactly a bad thing: gets people downloading titles right off the bat)instead of slapping them both on the same disc.

I couldn't see that working on consoles

I do think there'll be some games that get Next - Gen versions along with the Xbox 360 version like GTA 5 & Bioshock infinite which will be like the high end PC version

Very bad idea, imho.

You are essentially saying that console makers should give less reasons to buy the next-gen consoles to people and bottleneck the game development on the new consoles...

And to be honest, I think companies that don't wish to jump on the next-gen bandwagon due to smaller initial install bases should not do so then.

They're really asking "why aren't there any PS2 games still made since it's got a install base of over 150 million users?"

Well, go develop games for it then...

in theory it could work though since the idea is that someone who is not sure about getting the xbox 720 (for example) would buy the double version. If the game is enjoyable then the gamer might seriously consider getting a 720 to play through it with an upgraded experience. This impulse would get stronger over time as the gamer with only a 360 would have all these games that would immediately translate over to the 720 and so it's like starting off with an okay library off the bat.

I can think of a security issue with that... if you have a single common file, and the encryption on the current gen side is compromised (inevitable), you now have a known plaintext from which to attack the next-gen version.

the_bi99man

resolution, framerate, texture quality

this is faily common in the beggining of every gen, look at just cause for the Xbox and the xbox 360, they're exactly the same game, except the 360 version runs smoother and at a higher resolution. Or look at the Wii-u's multiplats

I can tell that you have no background in programming. You actually need 4 ports of the game made, one for each system (360,ps3, 720,ps4, then you need to fit all of them on the lowest common denominator as far as storage spaces goes, which is the 360's dvd. Lighting effects are not something you can just add on to a game without modifying its engine. You can upscale graphics to a certain extent, but you cannot make them that much better, as the data required just isn't there. A great example of this is Oblivion for the PC. Playing the game in 1920x1080 looks nicer than 800x600, and textures do look a bit more crisp. but you really need a high-res texture pack to make them look extraordinary. By the way, the Xbox 360 currently has the ability to upscale its games to 1080p. How much better do games look at 1080p vs 720p on the 360?

you got me there, I know nothing about programing :P
