We are currently coming off of one of the best gens ever with the PS3 and Xbox 360. And it's all down to one thing, competition.

Sony and MS have both pushed each other so hard to do better and improve.

What would the PS3 have been like without MS forcing Sony to get up off their ass and fight for their lives, because at the beginning of this gen, Sony were so used to being default market leaders, they weren't doing much.

For a start PSN would still be pretty basic, I doubt PSN Plus would have ever happened. Would Sony have felt the need to really improve/evolve itself or the feature set of the console. The PS4 would never have been designed the way it was. The PS4 looks to really be a competition console (business model and architecture), where as the PS3 was forced to compete, when Sony hadn't expected to.

Likewise without Sony, MS would NEVER have evolved from the first Xbox to the Xbox 360 (not talking about hardware here) and continued after that. Why would they have felt the need.

With MS jumping off the cliff, who will push Sony to evolve past the PS4s initial state.

Competitions healthy and MSs failure is nothing to celebrate or laugh at, because it's the gamer that losses.

This isn't damage control, i've already said i'm leaning towards the PS4.

Actually MS have already shown they can compete in the market on level terms so if their approach fails this time it would simply make them try a new approach. It wouldn't make them withdraw completely.

I don't want the XBox One to fail completely. I just want Microsoft to learn their lesson. Don't shove ideas down our throat. They need to let things evolve naturally, not make a console that won't if we're not online...

I agree competition is good, but we have more to lose by them succeeding than them failing. It sets a dangerous precedent with all these ways they try to directly control physical and digital software. It'd be just as bad for them to be a success. Be nice if they'd scrap this and put gamers first again like they mostly did with the 360 though even then, they were trying to squeeze money every way they could at gamer's expense.

Competition is always good for consumers.  But I still don't understand MS.  Why would you create a device that severely limits your possible buyers, offer inferior hardware for a 100 more, and be so smug about it.  They took two huge steps back and hopefully they learn from it after x1's gen ends.

Also, if we as consumers find something is horrible for the hobby we are in, it's fine to hope it fails.   That doesn't mean we don't want Sony to have any competition moving forward though.

Good point, maybe MS should fail at the begining and realise they have to drop the things people are pissed off about.

i really don't care.

companies screw things up then (hopefully)  learn from it and move on.

the 360 was designed at its heart as a way to get a piece of the new market of peoples living rooms as a revenue stream and no matter what kind of fail the x1 ends up being they are not going to give up on it.

there is just too much money to be made.

ms itself would literally have to go out of business completely for them to not have a way to sell you movies and music from your couch.

"MS is good for competition."
Only gamers would say something like that.
It's good to have competition, but of all the companies that could be a competitor they are perhaps the worst.

XBOX will fall to second place. Learn it's lesson. And come back all the better for it next time. The PS3's mistakes are why the PS4 looks so good right now. And so it goes and so it goes.

A little failure can be good for competition. It was the failed launch of the PS3 that helped get Sony back to their A game. A failure for the XBone could help get MS to shift its focus and polices back to catering to providing a top notch gaming experience build around preferences of gamers.

PSN+ got XBOX LIVE gold to offer games with it's service. This is what competition SHOULD do.

I want the Juan to fail not because I want M$ out of the console war but because I want them to stop being greedy douches and actually listen to their consumers. If the Juan fails chances are their next console will be a great gamers console. Look at Windows Vista for example. It was a piece of shit OS and failed, and because of that M$ actually went back and did serious work to make a great OS like Windows 7. Now Windows 8 is crap again and it's failing so chances are Windows 9 will be a great OS. M$ needs to fail once in a while because of their arrogance. They keep doing stupid things due to their arrogance and trying to force things on their consumers. They are actually at their best when their products fail and they go back to the drawing board and listen to their consumers.

Our consumers seem to like the XboxOne, I don't see any room for failure. If you have concerns you should contact the many reps from E-mail to twitter and so on. So far with very little complaints, and great pre-orders o our website as well as third-parties for reservations, our consumers are happy. If you have any questions I am here for awhile to answer.

Eventually consoles will adopt always-online; it just won't happen this gen. Microsoft took a risky gamble by adopting it early and ended up presenting it to consumers through lies and half-truths, which is why they're getting slaughtered in the press.

The way it was conveyed made a world of difference. Microsoft didn't emphasize the strengths of an always-online system and they flat-out ignored the used-games issue rather than confronting it, which allowed rumors to fester. When they clarified the issue they only made it worse because the truth just confirmed what people feared. Even worse yet, they expected Sony to take a similar approach, but Sony realized this was bad press for Microsoft and rubbed salt in the wounds.

ps1 curbstomped its competition and we got one of the best consoles ever, the ps2, is a matter of how companies approach their products, with ps3 they got cocky but i think they've learned their lesson, we might have the next ps2 comming.

I don't want the XboxOne to fail. Neither do I want the Wii-U to fail (granted I'm not interested in the hardware but *sigh* I'll settle for the inevitable games). I want all three to continue making games I like. Without Microsoft, Sony would gain great hegemony and influence over the video game industry and able to jack up the price on their console or whatever. Then just say, "Deal with it."

I don't want the XboxOne to fail. However, I'm not supporting it like it is. Screw that.

Third party relations, online service ect. They became as big as Playstation fairly quickly. You don't think the Playstation 3 had evolved to match what 360 started with?

The most innovative thing they came up with was the boomerang controller which they quickly discarded. Now look at them go, Sony have gone from underestimating the competition to wanting to destroy them.

Nintendo changed in a big way because of the tough competition from Sony, it's the way things are, everyone does it, everyone has to adapt to changes.

To me only Nintendo changed and tried something different... and they suceded. As for the Sony and Microsoft... their both very similar.

I don't see your point with third party relations or online service... Online service was a natural evolution... It's not like either of them invented the online gaming...
