By your explanation and understanding (horribly flawed as it it) all anyone does is lose money....alextherussianPoint being. No need to be so proud of a system's sales when you get nothing out of it

System Wars has always been about Sales, and I mean always. People just say other wise now because the Wii is winning.
Sales do matter in which direction the industry will go.
Most of the time, it is used as a factor by system loyalists to claim superiority over other systems. Only at this point is when sales do not matter.
It's funny when people brag about a system getting more sales than another system, when it's your money they are taking. That's right they win, you lose money. Everytime somebody brags about a system winning sales, they are loosing money to the system, yet they are so proudmetal-movementerm. i lose no money if somebody else buys a system i own. sales means the likelihood of my system being supported for a long time goes up.

if youre a fan of something you will want it to succeed
same thing applies to sports, im a fan of the Lakers, i get nothing from them winning, i even PAY to watch them play, but yet i enjoy it when they win.... life if funny like that

Sales don't affect the way the industry will grow? What? Why do you think Square Enix dumps so much into the FF, DQ, and KH franchises? Why do you think Sony and MS both present motion control?
Companies want money, and sales are that source of money. There is a direct correlation between sales and what happens in the industry for most cases.
Nope. Sales is the only real way to determine whether to win a gen or not, because all other factors are subjective, whether it may be games, quality of games or features. Heck you can still find people here on SW who think that Lair is a good game and sixaxis is a mentionable feature for the ps3, because it is their opinion, but it doesn't necessarily make it right in my opinion or yours (just an example, no offense). Sales on the otherhand represent a consoles popularity and the general populations interest in the console, and also how likely it is to see a next gen version of that particular console.
Losing money would be finding an open window and chucking your wallet out of it.Skittles_McGee:lol: I applaud the humor!
@DoomZaW
I agree, but when sales numbers are in the tens of millions for all consoles (Wii 50million, Xbox 34 Million, PS3 27 Million, I think...), does sales matter as much, as say last gen (When the PS2 totally hammered the competition) . All of them have got huge amounts of sales, and this gen has been the closest since SNES/Genesis, in terms of support, and games. So, sales may not matter as much as it used to.

They matter because there is NO other way to determine officially whether a console "wins" a gen or not

I probably didn't say that right. I know sales matter and I know it affects the industry's growth. What I meant was that the fanboys use sales to say that their system is better than the others rather than compare sales without acting arrogant about it.

ps3 has lost sony $4.7 billion and are still losing money on each ps3 sold.... are you sure sales still dont matter now?

Sales matters as no-one/company can survive without it.
According to your logic I am losing money if I go and buy food from McDonald's lol Losing money would be me making a fire and then proceeding to throw my money in while laughing maniaclyTheMightyHoov
You could loose money by breaking something on purpose and replacing it.

There is so much hypocrisy in System Wars by the "sales don't matter" camp, as whenever there is a NPD/Media Create/VG Chartz, etc. hardware/software thread, it is often generates hundreds of posts from that camp.
Sales do matter for gamers, developers, and publishers. The video game industry would not be worth billions of dollars and grown to rival the film industry without sales. Gamers will not see sequels of their favorite games or see more innovative ones without sales. Developers would go under without sales and their employees will be laid off and with them their talent without sales.
