I don't out right hate FFXII but it is my lease favorite of the Franchise. I'll list the postives first though, the new gameplay was a nice step forware for the series, and I did like the side quests. But my main complaints goes as such:

  • Un-interesting story: Personally preference I know, but the story was awfully dull. Kudos to Square for going against the "Save the World" type, but FFXII was just far to political for my taste. And this leads me to my next point
  • Poor Cast: I could not get into the characters of thsi game for the life of me. The only one who was likable was Balthier.
  • Soundtrack
  • Boss Battle: While the new gameplay was nice, boss battles basically just felt like normal enemies with more HP.
Just overall it lacked the magic. :?

I think that has to deal with the gameplay ****though, when going with a free open combat system like that, have the time you can do the exact same attack without thinking too much. With turn back you actually have to think more about your next move a lot more.

I agree with everything stated there, it didn't feel like, well it didn't feel like Final Fantasy, it felt like an MMO, and an boring one at that, the story i couldn't of cared less about, the dungeons were just grinds to the end to advance the boring story, there was just no good moments in that game. If your going for that kind of combat, atleast give the players some way of using good looking moves, and not yawn fest auto attack (the magic sucked)

Honestly as someone said before me, it's the only final fantasy i didn't enjoy, and i'm dissapointed with the fact it got 10's in many places, it didn't deserve that, and i hope Square listen to there fans, and not these fools.

The story was good up until after the stillshrine of miriam. Then it kind of "quickly" wrapped up ... meaning tons of dungeons and only a few story moments before it was over and not much happened in the story overall.

That and there were other problems with the system, like the license board being mostly pointless (especially the skills), boss battles not having their old charm, summons being useless compared to myst quickenings.

The ordinary battles, however, were very fun compared to the chore they can be in other final fantasy games.

I liked FFXII quite a bit. It probably should've been called Ivalice Alliance instead of FF but i enjoyed its tone, political story and art direction alot more than the overdramatic POS that was FFX, with a Meg Ryan look-a-like in the lead role

But my tastes in FFs arent that popular, my favourite FF is still FFIX...and then FFVI,

Fran FTW

Balthier FTW

Judge Magisters FTW

Ivalice and Soundtrack FTW

I haven't enjoyed a Final Fantasy game in the main series since IX, X, X-2, XI, XII.... I think they're missing the point these days. I'll take IV, V, VI, VII, VII, and IX any day.

I always thought it was funny when people call XII's story more poliitcally oriented.

I found VIII to be more politically oriented than XII.

See, I didn't like FF10 all that much. The path was incredibly linear, and some of the characters (Wakka, imo) were pretty unbearable.

FF12 on the other hand had great main characters, and I enjoyed having a strong female protagonist, one who could really kick butt, instead of the usual wimpy white mage that needs constant rescue.

Add in tons of side quests and optional boss monsters to fight and gameplay that lasts over 100 hours and I would call it the third best FF of all time, right behind FF2(IV) and FF7.

I liked the new battle system.

The only thing good about Final Fantasy XII was the soundtrack especially Victory Fanfare. It felt like a pain playing that game, it took me around two years to finally finish it.

Totally. I based my party around her, and had her as my user controlled character, giving her all the white magic I could and always equiping her first. Nothing like having a female paladin tanking.

I loved IX too, i only actuley played it once, cause it was late in the PSones life, but i remember enjoying it way more than VIII, and i can't wait to play it again, i hope i still enjoy it.

Though about the characters in 12, i never really connected with any of them, i didn't like ashe either, i don't like "tough" girls or girls who are supposed to be leaders, it just doesn't go with me, and it usualy just irriates me. However i did like Basche, he was the only character who seemed like a real man, and not a cross between a woman and a man, or a vice versa. However with 13 keeping a similar combat system, i hope they can manage to add more tactical things to it, like with turn based, not where it's just zerg like 12.

I'm suprised no one mentioned the immense amount of grinding. That was ridiculous. Ignoring that FF12 was an excellent game. I don't know why people say they don't like the characters, I thought they were quite like able, save for the leading role and his annoying girl thing. I don't remember much of the story, but I enjoyed it. The only thing that put me off finishing the game was the stupid level of leveling. I wish I had finished it though, one of the best JRPGs I have played, and at this point I have played a fair bit. Though my guess is alot of the hate come from the fact it's a square enix game, and that appears to be the cool new thing to do. If 6-10 were good, and 11 was an MMO, then how can SE have runied FF in one game? I don't get it. I guess it's just people living in their very own little nostalgic centered world.

i won't say i HATE the game, but it's definitely not my fave. i liked it initially, but after awhile it felt like i was just grinding from point A to point B and i didn't really like the plot that much. all in all, im not a MMO person and it felt like i waited years for a half baked offline MMORPG and while i played it to completion some parts really felt like a chore, like requiring the bubble magic or belt to complete the game. i've never need a specific spell or item in the past before FF10 nor did i need a super specific strategy before FF10 to beat one, i can't appreciate that, i'd prefer the strategies to be open ended.

well first of all the main character Vaan is probably the fruitiest looking character of all time. the story wasnt nearly as good as FFX their last major release. and there were no romantic elements which i think SE does well. The best thing outta FFXII was the real time battle which i'm glad their putting in 13. hopefully i'll gain some interest to beat it before 13 whenever a game drought comes along this year.

Agreed Vaan was a wonce and I'm a main character type person, ff12 levels were all grinds, they were as dry as heck and creatures wouldn't leave you alone. as for characters the only one I really liked in the least was Basch. But I prefer warriors type characters, so for me finshing ff12 was not that easy. FF10 isn't to everyones taste but the story was epic graphics in the time were amzing and the battle system worked for me, thats what FF series is all about.

Fair enough. Still dosn't explain why alot of people feel the FF series has gone down hill. Save for a few dodgy spin offs (7 and 10 spin offs.) every FF game to this point has been good. Even if you consider FF12 as bad, that's still only one trip. If FF13 creates a split when it's released, then that would mabye suggest the FF series has gone a bit down hill, but at this point I don't see how anyone can judge it in the way they do. I mean you could say it's just SE in general, but the only evidence to support that is one or two meh RPG experiments, and lots of re releases, which are not really a bad thing. Try find a copy of FF tactics today and the chances are it will put you back a fair bit. Why not just get the improved PSP version instead? It makes sense to me, I'm glad they are re releaseing their old games for the effort it takes them, which can't be alot.

Ok I know not everyone likes the FF games, but through my years iv never seen so much hate to a particular part. I was just wondering why do people hate it? Dont mind my user name. At the time I made this it was all I could think off. I would change it if I knew how lol.

finalfantasy94

While FF12 had a lot of excellent qualities, it also fell short in some areas. And when a game shows huge promise it makes the setbacks all the more obvious.

I personally loved the new direction for the story, but felt it got bogged down and went from interesting to dragging like a snails butt. And then, just when things feel they are really going nowhere, the game throws what seems like 10 boss battles at you in a row and the game is over. The pacing is just way off which pulls you out of what could have been one of the best stories in all FF games.

Another problem with the game is that the level up system gives you freedom to develop your team how you want. While sounding good on paper (or in strategy games) this just made all you characters feel identical and therefore with any identity. WIthout differing identities there really isn't a reason to bother with more than 3 characters for the whole game.

Some people also a problem with the combat, but I personally didn't mind it. HOwever, the reason I didn't mind it is because I didn't even bother using it. I just played like I normally would and gave continual orders to the whole team. They were set to "fight always" or whatever, and when necessary I gave different commands as I felt necessary. I didn't use a single case of the battle systems ordered menu. I think this is a problem because if you want to revolutionize your game series, you have to make it more user friendly and then essentially force people to use it. Even if there was just a "assign best" option like they did with junctioning in 8. Didn't care about junctioning? The game would set up a decent option for you. You can't just create a new fighting system but then have people not using it or doing what they want.

Prehaps but I still think games should be raising there standards especially FF series owned by Square Enix who have a personal goal. (we aim to make unforgettable experiences through epic storyline for our fans.) Or something like that, any way they try to hard in some areas, not enough in others. Example. FF13 sorry to say I know this game is going to take another year or more likely two.

I don't understand the hate FFXII gets. IMO it was one of the best FF titles to come out. The story was good and also the battle system was pretty good too, art work and world setting was great to look at. Although there are a few things I didn't enjoy thoses being Vann and Penelo (talk about some awful characters) some of the character interaction was pretty dull for a Final fantasy title (on a side note I'm still sad that Yasumi Matsuno left during the project also leaving Square-Enix). Other than that FFXII was a great game IMO better than the borefest called Final Fantasy X.

It gets hate for the terrible, and I mean terrible story. FF games are generally known for their moving stories and interesting characters. FFXII had none of that other than that girls tiny red skirt.

I loved FFXII for its amazing battle system and open world.

IX is extremely popular and so is VI. VII and X fans are only second to IX fans.

Lionheart08

I know VI is popular but IX? I remember it being criticized by its look and "lack of bepth back then. Even today people praise VI, VII, X, and even VIII over IX

Dude, you should probably check out some FF boards. IX is actually the only recent FF that doesn't get harshly bashed.

I should've bolded "back then". I dont frequent FF boards, my ignorance is understandable. Happy to hear that anyway cuz i know it wasnt that well regarded a few years ago

It's true. Ironically, I do find that it lacks depth and the nonsensical ending lacks any real meaning whatsoever. I replayed it recently (haven't done it for years), and I was very disappointed with the direction the plot took.

IMO, FF12 lacked the mysterious beauty and epic sense of scope prevalent in previous titles. But the gameplay was good.

You know I thought the insanely high scores and millions of sales meant it was a good game, just a hunch though. It's IMO the most well made FF to date, doesn't mean it has to be your favorite though.

My question is that is this worth buying?

I dont really wanna spend hours and not enjoying it.
Only a good story can keep me going, but if this doesnt have it, am afraid this might be the only major final fantasy game i will never try out.

7,8, 10 are ones that really stand out.

A good story is all based on opinion. Professional critics praised 12's story, though I'm not sure if that means anything to you. Personally I loved the characters and the setting. The story is based more on a world in conflict rather than an underground issue that threatens the world. I think if you liked the story of Final Fantasy Tactics, you'll enjoy FFXII.

The battle system was a broken mess that allowed for cheap hits galore on your party.

I actually thought it was cool because you could fix the battle system whenever you thought it was broken, but hey that's just me.

dull... corridor corridor corridor....

what made me finish the game was i was always looking forward to the plot to make me more interested in the characters...

but no, they just wanted to group together and fight that mutated fellow guy(who i think was a cousin of sephiroth).

Final Boss FFVII = Finall Boss FFXII

On an awesome level, FFXII cant catch up though. :P

oh and the endless grinding, besides that, the game was an 8.0 fine for me... :D

I agree. You can tinker with it 'til you get it right.

I guess it's just people living in their very own little nostalgic centered world.WasntAvailable

true.

the game had too much grinding for its own good.

there was no REAL depth to its grinding too.

i felt dissapointed.

im playing iv right now and i must say, i wish FF games still had turn based gameplay.

FFXII is technically turnbased, they just made the world much more fluid by taking out random battles. i only grinded for high level hunts, which is optional.

FFXII has been my favorite for a while. No game (except Tales of Vesperia which was close) has been as good as FFXII especially not that turd Lost Oddysey.
