Competition is great for the gaming industry and the consumers of gaming products. In 2008, the battle for best console will be won in many domains including most consoles units sold, best game titles, best multiplayer and brightest future.

For the last few years we've seen the Xbox 360 dominate in many domains of competition. Microsoft has continued to receive key titles on their platform because their development support is extremely friendly and consumers, in the United States specifically, have taken to purchasing the console as the PC-alternative for current generation gaming. Microsoft's LIVE! integration for gaming is tightly built to the 360 experience and allows consumers to quickly purchase add-on content for game levels, rock band and guitar hero songs and silly content such as picture packs and themes.

Microsoft isn't perfect; however, both developers and gamers have seen the instabilities in the 360 product line and live in fear of red rings of death or other fatal malady. Gamers spend weeks waiting for their 'coffins' to arrive and their refurbished 360s to bless their stoop. While they wait in concern Sony and Nintendo attempt to lure the weakening gamer to their console empire. We stagger and question our livelihood as 360 gamers while our box sits dead upon the shelf wondering to ourselves, "did we make the right choice?"

Then we look to the library of games the Wii has to offer and find titles like Wii Play, Bass Fishing, Mario and Sonic, Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy, which fit our fancy in high school but aren't convincing the older gamers with limited game time. The PlayStation 3, already a few years old, slowly grows their empire with promises of a Final Fantasy, God of War and Metal Gear solid yet we've seen nothing which makes us wish to invest our precious greenbacks. Yet the PlayStation 2, last generation's winner, sells consoles in tight competition with Wii to help remedy Sony's game division financial concerns.

Convinced we're on the path best traveled, we replace our 360 with a refurbished build, buy used on eBay or hunt stores for the infamous "falcon chipset." This time, however, we invest in a warranty extension because we don't want our inner child to feel the pain and remorse of another dead console. Life goes on. We know it seems dirty to invest in a faulty piece of hardware yet the games library is extensive enough to warrant the repeated investment.

Early in 2008 we've seen Sony arrive with positive news by dominating the high definition DVD race and beating the competition using their unlimited wallet. This new Blu-Ray technology is the "one ring to rule them all" for next-generation DVD quality and it comes to us for free in every PlayStation 3. Oddly enough, average consumers are murmuring about this high definition battle for which they know little but do hear the words "Sony" and "PlayStation 3" being thrown around. Subtle words, true, but words that fall into the recesses of our long term memory to arise later when decisions must be made: which console shall we buy?

Vaporware in the name of Metal Gear Solid and God of War arrive in full color on game trailer websites, youtube and video podcasts around the world; these games are real! Two years of development stroll by and large firms start to kick out PlayStation 3 titles to rival that of the 360 in terms of graphics and game play experiences. Burnout Paradise, Grand Theft Auto IV arriving soon, Call of Duty 4: Modern Combat and, eventually, their grand exclusives Metal Gear and perhaps Final Fantasy. A console is only as good as its library of games, scratching backwards compatibility off our list; we're now looking to the future of gaming to forecast the smartest console buy for the money.

What of the Wii? The hottest selling console just releases Super Smash Bros. Brawl and gamers line up all over the country to sell out the, soon to be, number one game of the year on the Wii. The only game to rival the best selling CoD4 on the 360 is Wii Play with Remote-a game which isn't worth the CD it's pressed on but arrives with an additional remote for local multi-player experiences for which the Wii thrives. The Wii, it rivals that of the infamous bald eagle in terms of rarity and casual gamers cannot stop slapping down cash for this elusive white gold. Novelty or best console of the year, the fact of the matter is this: it's the top selling console month over month.

Casual gamers make up the largest demographic around the world so it is no surprise the Wii is killing at every retail store, however, casual gamers also buy the least amount of games and equipment ("the attachment") and thus the console is hot while the games are not. Gamers with worldwide friends find no solace in Wii as the friend code nightmare is simply too frustrating to deal with, so gamers resort to local friends and neighbors for multi-player gaming.

Sony is at the doorstep of success in 2008 in terms of owning the domains of the console war. Their network infrastructure isn't as solid and integrated as that of the 360 but it makes the Wii friend-code system look like a resume written in crayon. The PlayStation 3 has had its fair share of bad press but nothing in terms of the drastic hardware meltdown seen by its older chipset competition and the new conquest of Blu-Ray hardware shows us that their risky investment in a "Blu-Ray Trojan Horse" was nothing but masterful albeit a bit lucky.

This year gamers will be looking to the future of the current generation hardware. If a gamer wanted an Xbox 360 they've had ample time to develop such desire and savings to purchase one. Now they're looking for the next greatest thing, for Xbox 360 owners that might be Gears of War 2 in late November and for Wii that will continue to be Super Smash Bros Brawl and Wii Mario Kart. Once Nintendo issues its big hits for this year they'll be fresh out of titles to draw in console buyers-not a problem given consumers are purchasing Wii for one game: Wii Sports.

The Sony PlayStation 3 offers gamers promise of blockbuster titles this year, a Blu-Ray experience for high definition enthusiasts on the only high definition media, a multi-player experience a bit less than the Microsoft LIVE! but generations above Nintendo's solution and a slowly dropping price making the purchase within the grasps of an avid gamer. The price to play on Sony's solution is free, much like the Nintendo solution, so gamers know their getting what they paid for in these two scenarios. It's hard to compare a free solution to a $50.00 a year solution which Microsoft supports so when comparing apples to apples you must compare Wii to PS3.

Honestly, at this point Sony has nowhere to go but up in terms of sales figures and realizing revenue on their high end higher priced console. The question remains, will the fervor of this years Gears of War 2 title best that of Halo 3 and cast shadows upon Sony and their Metal Gear solid franchise? If Microsoft's hype machine can hold consumer interests until November of 2008 and Nintendo continues to ride the casual wave it will be a steep slope for Sony. Remember, Sony bought their way into the next generation of high definition media, they might just buy their way into this generation of consoles too.

There's fair logic in this arguement, but it seems to be just an amalgamation of a bunch of arguements that have been thrown out over and over again in System wars and each time the only response I have seen has been the MS fanboy company lines............

i think the PS3 is headed in the right direction, except the PS3 doesn't have enough good exclusive games compared to the 360. I mean c'mon. MGS 4 and God of war 3, GT 5.... thats only three freaking games, 360 has the best exclusives easily. It will be a close race between the PS3 and 360 but if the 360 keeps spitting out better exclusives then it deserves to win the console war

Great thread.

I agree with you: the way things are now, MS will strive to maintain sales (their lineup won't make sales go up, but they'll probably make up to the bad press of 3rls). Now, the PS3 is in a much better position. Even with no games it still outsold 360 in 2007 by 1.5 million units. In 2008, it already is outselling the 360 by more than a million units worldwide. That's with no Home, no games, no in-game XMB...

As long as Sony's big titles stay exlcusive, we can safely gurantee a tie for 2nd or a 3 way tie for 1st if the Wii ever slows down. No one will be leading by a huge margin this gen.

Doesn't matter how many exclusives Sony will get, I don't think it will catch up to the Wii or 360. Its fallen way too far behind.

But if Sony concentrates (and backs) the PS3 and its software l think in the long run (10 + years ) they will come out on top. Its hardware is way more reliable than the PS2s at launch. Blu ray will continue to strenghthen and ultimatly lower the price of the PS3 in the future also. Multiplats will be worked on on the PS3 first. IN the long run they have a chance.

Wow there are way more than 3 and those 3 are the worst imo (sorry snake eaters but the MGS series kind of sucks) i could name 10 if you wanted me to. Thing is Micro soft won't be able to keep a number of exclusives up because it was there few 1st party devs

I don't know if the PS3 will beat the Wii just cause they have such a huge lead right now, but the PS3 is picking up speed and it doesn't look like it'll stop anytime soon, the 360 is slowing down in sales and it's pretty obvious PS3 will beat it out, untill it passes the 360 it will be interesting to see if it passes the wii.

i'm eager to see when people will be bored by the wii and when we will start to see hundreds of spin offs from the mario/zelda/metroid franchises like in the days of the GC where games like resident evil kept the cube alive

There are considerable amounts of exclusives coming to the PS3 this 2008. Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Motorstorm 2, Haze, SOCOM: Confrontation, Tekken 6 are just few of them.

Add Playstation Home and more Blu-ray movies to the mix then more PS3 will be sold and the PS3 will dominate 2008. IMO, The PS3 will not win but finish in 2nd when this gen ends. The Wii will most likely win this gen.

i think sony will take second by 09 for sure, two years is plenty of time to catch up with the 360.

you should take into account that the ps3 has out sold the 360 so far this year, and has been for some time in europe and japan.

I won't past judgement on the PS3 until I see how big effect "PS Home" becomes. Sony has created one of the largest gaming company around; therefore, I'm not worry about exclusives. I want to see how much of a push will they give to new IPs. Will they continue to reinvent Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, Folklore? Or, will they push for new ideas. I'm looking for a PS1 type library, not a PS2.

Wow, is that really the current state of affairs? People without online friends have to "resort" to playing with local friends and neighbors?

On the arguments, I see very few arguments that haven't been repeated plenty of times in SW already or are operating on flawed logic.

When the Xbox came out, the PS2 had a tremendous lead. The Xbox was the most powerful of the three consoles then, but was slightly pricier, had virtually no foothold in the Asian markets and correspondingly, had a very action style of library, more suited to the North American and European markets.

Yet the Xbox came out slugging, swallowed down initial losses on the cost of each system, and earned a place in the market.

Now PS3 is in a position of catch up, but they don't seem to be playing to their strengths.

MGS4? Final Fantasy? GT5? To me, a library is like a hockey team. Tampa Bay had the powerful Richards-Lecavalier-St. Louis line.. yet even two years after winning the Cup and they don't even make the playoffs. Why? Star Power does not make up for depth.

Show me a Suikoden. Show me an Armored Core. Show me a MegaTen grindfest and a ShinMegamiTensei resetfest.

Then we can start talking about the future.

Note: I really don't follow gaming news, so if these titles are already in the works, substitute them with some of the dozens of other, perhaps not so lackluster or appreciated, PS2 exclusives.

Why did you say no fanboys in your title? Are you trying to block 90% of system wars posters from entering the discussion?

Having owned all 3 next gen consoles at one time or another before finally settling with just my 60gig PS3 i can honestly say that if

The Wii had HD, updated hardware, and a better online scenario it would be even more of a contender, but it's still a very fun console

The 360 did not have the plague of the Red Ring of Death, they would be much further ahead of all the others by now with their game library

The PS3, however requires nothing in terms of hardware, it has the free online service although not as user friendly as Xbox Live, it just needs more hit titles, which i believe time will take care of, i also think that the new and old exclusive franchises the PS3 does have are more value to Playstation fans than most other console exclusives, don't forget PS3 has such new and established hits like...

Ratchet and Clank, Resistance, Gran Turismo, God of War, Metal Gear, Warhawk, Haze, MLB:The Show 08, Motorstorm, Twisted Metal, Champions of Norrath, Heavenly Sword, Tekken, Killzone 2, Socom, Kingdom Hearts, Jak & Daxter, Sly Cooper, Final Fantasy...

And according to Playstation magazine these titles either have already been released, or will be receiving PS3 sequels to come along with the 167 titles listed in a recent issue to be released by years end, now in reality i'm sure half those titles will either be pushed back, some might be cancelled altogether or released on time but either way, i just believe that if it only comes down to a matter of good titles to be released in order to propel the PS3 into serious contention and perhaps even the eventual console leader then i'd say between the few exclusives listed here and the eventual multi-plat titles shared with the 360, then the PS3 with it's more powerful and reliable hardware will eventually be the force to be reckoned with once a serious game library is established.

First of all, I want to thank you for writing a real, intelligently thought out thread. we don't see many of these around here.

However, I think there's some stuff you've over looked, that could hae some real effects on the future of the ps3.

While the 360 RRoD is indeed a problem, that doesn't seem to be deterring many sales, and the ps3 has only out sold it for a couple months now. Even if the 360 and ps3 continue selling at their current rates, or if the ps3 picks up just a little bit, it will still be quite a while before the ps3 can over take the 360 in sales, Added to the fact that MS probably has some stuff planned, the ps3 over taking the 360 doesn't look like a great possibility.

I thinkthe ps3 will have even more problems beting out the wii, because not only is it still selling like mad, but it seems that every one's buying it. You were certainly right when you said that a lot of casuals are buying it, and that they buy the fewest games and accessories. But the wii's price point is making it attractive to al ot of people as a second console, and these people are buying more games.

With the ps3's future, especially MGS4 and FFXIII, we can certainly expect a rise in sales, But if MS and ninty do something great to counter their moves, the ps3 will stil be a long way from winning.
