when you could just get a ps3? Even if you hate the games it has (you must not be human) it still has been proven to be the best and one of the cheapest blu ray player available. Plus (imagining that you didn't get it for games) it can still b used to download and watch movies and shows, watch sites like hulu and youtube on your tv and you can store images, music, photos ect on it or steam them from your pc.

If adoption rates are any indication, most people would just as soon not pay for a Blu-Ray player at all.

A lot of Blu-Ray players can be found in the $200-$250 price range. Wal-Mart has 3 models in that range to be exact. Spending an extra $150-$200 for the PS3 just for watching Blu-Ray movies doesn't make a lot of sense. Those little extra features you mentioned that the PS3 has doesn't really matter to most people who are looking for a Blu-Ray player. They just want to stick in a Blu-Ray disc, sit on the couch, and start enjoying the movie.

My brother found a early model standalone blu-ray player on ebay for $20 (and it works!). I think thats a good reason to buy a blu-ray player by itself.

You gotta remember that a good number of people still hasn't upgraded to HDTVs and if they bought a blu ray player or a PS3 for a blu ray player they would have to also buy an HDTV and the way the economy has been going I don't think alot of people would make that large investment right now.

And I'm that kind of person. I feel like getting me a blu-ray player but not a PS3. I personally don't really care for any other features the PS3 has besides the blu-ray. I'm not interested in any of its games neither. Thats just me though.

A PS3 is no longer the cheapest Blu-Ray player. The cheapest PS3 model is $400 whereas now there have been Blu-Ray players dropping to $200 - $250.

They are getting even cheaper. Prices for older players that are in spec (1.1) are expected to be in the $150s this holiday season. I think Sony is in a bad place when you can buy a Xbox 360 + BD Player for less than the price of a PS3.

Prices have really dropped on these things. A year ago the PS3 was not only the best BD player, but it was one of the cheapest. Now you can buy almost 3 stand alones for the price of 1 PS3.

I'm guessing standalone Blu-Ray players have better sound and picture and probably aren't as loud as the PS3.

Because you can get a stand alone Blu Ray player for $200, get an XBOX 360 for $200, and then have a superior game lineup without wearing on your game console when playing movies... All for the cost of the lower end PS3 model.

Actually, the PS3 is still one of the best players on the market. Not the cheapest anymore, but still among the best.

Really? Well, shut my mouth. I always assumed standalone players were superior. I guess the TC has a point then.

I don't know about loudness, but the other two aren't right. Its upscaling isn't as good as others, but for BD its been rated on par with or better than other players (some being waaaaaay more expensive) for picture and audio quality.

The fact that the PS3 can and does receive firmware updates regularly is a main reason for that. Its one of the reasons it was one of the first players to support BD-j 2.0.

Stand alone players are 175-200 now...I have a funny feeling when black Friday comes around ..A big box store like Walmat will push a 99$ BR player..

In any event I like the BR found in the PS3 because it has firmware updates...

I'd have to agree that buying a stand alone player isn't generally the best option, considering that the PS3 is still largely considered one of the best blu-ray players available; however, if you're looking for a strictly economical option, than stand alone's are a good choice. As people have said, they're much cheaper than PS3s. Either way, I've been working with Warner Home Video on some blu-ray projects and I've got to say that regardless of player, the format is definitely worth it.

i am going to say most the majority of people who own bluray players are still audio/videofiles...the majority of them have a harmony or some type of universal remote that controls all there equipement. And sony decided not to put a darn sensor in the ps3 so these remotes can not control it... so i would rather buy a stand alone if i was not a gamer for that reason alone...and they can now be had cheaper than a ps3
