I don't know if it's just me, but I don't think nintendo is taking the industry in any direction. Sure, they bring in plenty of casuals which is great, and is what most consoles these days are trying to accomplish, but other than that, what does it do? It shows we are wowed by a remote, that in my oppinion, is not very good. I own a Wii, and the games are fun, Warioware is blast with friends, but now I kind of get where people come from when they say it's like a Gamecube 1.5. I know it's a bit early, but it seems like you coulda just given a motion sensing remote for the Gamecube and play these games on it. They aren't taking the industry in really any direction at this point, they haven't done much to improve their hardware at this point, and they haven't gotten a solid online going yet, annd other than the wiimote, what are they doing? I'm sorry if it sounds like I hate Nintendo, because I don't, I think they are a great company, I like my Wii, but seems more like a party kinda thing than an actual game system. I don't find myself playing it much, all my games get repetitive, the only time I really play it is when I have friends over. Does anyone agree with me on this? or are you all just going to flame me? :P

Sure, it's Gamecube 1.5 but it's cheap and something that I can play with my girlfriend. I love it and because it has so many units out there, expect companies like Square, Rockstar, Konami, and Capcom to load it up with goodies. Everybody and anybody who can afford to game HD should check into the Wii.

I agree it's fun and something you can use and play with friends, but idk, maybe I'm just complaining about it because I'm more of a hardcore gamer, but to me,it just seems like they aren't moving the industry forward really.

I played Warioware for half an hour over my lunch period today with some friends. It was pretty fun, but I couldn't see myself playing it for more than 1-2 weeks.

I would say warioware has a lot of replay value.  First of all, a lot of the micro games have great viceral enjoyment (like slapping that polygon wario in the face).  second, it is very worth it to unearth the goodies.  Pyoro S is a great addition to the arcade section of that game.  That conducting thing is fun too.

Chances are I didn't get enough time to fully appreciate it, but that was my initial impression.

Where are the other companies taking the industry?

They're doing the same thing, and now that our vantage points are placed along this direction, it's easy for people to say, "what's nintendo doing?"

It's called a paradigm shift.

The Playstation opened the gaming industry to casual gamers. It still offered games for hardcore and casual alike.

The Wii is opening the gaming industry to non-gamers. It will still offer games for hardcore, casual and non-gamer alike.

If hardware and online is really your thing, just stick with a PC or something.

Nintendo has improved the hardware (but boo hoo, it's not enough)
It's working on its online (but boo hoo, it's not good enough)

The heart of the matter is with Nintendo and the Wii is a lot of people are vocal about it being "not good enough."  In reality nothing is good enough.  Honestly if there's a lot of fun to be had playing games, the arcade is probably the best place to do it.  A short burst of fun that only lasts a few hours at most.

It's moving the industry forward more than the other two are doing.

Please tell me what the other consoles are trying to accomplish and tell me how its different from what consoles last gen are trying to accomplish.  Online, that was done last gen, and besides nintendo hasn't even released its online so how could you judge it?  Graphics? Yes, their better.  AI? I cant tell, it seems like bs. Physics? Do you really think realistic water is the future of gaming?  Gaming is supposed to be about stimulating gameplay, not games that strive to look like Shrek.  Nintendo's controller is something new, pointing at the screen is huge advancement in console technology, and motion sensing is an interesting aside to that.  And dont think that the wii cant do a deep adventure game or satisfying, dark FPS.  Just because there isnt one now doesn't mean there can't be in the future. (I know, zelda, but that is tacked on wii controls, beautifully done, but still)

If you're looking for a "hardcore" experience, you have to have the "hardcore" games. If you're playing Warioware, a collection of micro-games, you can't expect to have a lasting single player experience.

Zelda, Red Steel, Call of Duty 3, Excite Truck (not very "hardcore" but pretty fun with some replayability), Medal of Honor: Vanguard, Super Paper Mario (can't get more hardcore than going retro :p), The Godfather (great melee gestures), Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Prince of Persia (if you haven't played it already), Sonic, SSX Blur, Madden (best on Wii), and Trauma Center (mini-game'ish but an intense game) are some great "hardcore" games.

Soon to be coming are Alien Syndrome (sci-fi Diablo clone), Battalion Wars 2 (mix of third person shooter and RTS), Driver: Parallel Lines, Escape from Bug Island (no clue how that's gonna turn out - survival horror), Fantastic 4, Fire Emblem (turn-based RPG strategy), Godzilla Unleashed, Guitar Hero II & III, Harry Potter actually looks interesting on Wii, a Kirby game is apparently in the works for this year, Manhunt 2, Mario Strikers Charged (crazy soccer - online), Metroid Prime 3, Nights, Mortal Kombat, MySims (seems there's more customization in this version than the others, except for perhaps PC), No More Heroes, Pokemon Battle Revolution (online), Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil UC, Scarface (chainsaw - hope Jeff is reviewing :p), Space Station Tycoon, Spiderman 3 (2 handed webslinging and exclusive features!), Spyro, Super Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros Brawl, and Smackdown vs. RAW.

I think we have a good stream of good "hardcore" games here and coming 5 months after launch. :)

You're joking right?  Nintendo will throw the more hardcore a game here and there, but not nearly as many as they should.

Getting people that have never played games b-4 IS moving the industry forward if you know the buisness side of the industry you would clearly see that no one is moving the industry forward as much as nintendo today.

Oh yeah and whats more is giving developers a CHOICE (to make a 5 million$ game for the wii or a 20+ milloin $ game for the 360-PS3 is moving the industry forward by allowing even small companies to survive and big companies to be able to take risks) The Wii has widened the playing field in more ways than you are thinking. And from an investors standpoint (me) that is what moving forward is all about.

Nintendo is trying to take the market to the mass market. And that's dramatically different from the others.

Sony and Microsoft want their consoles to be appealing to the hardcore gamer. As a result, they've designed consoles to push the edge of technology to make consoles more powerful and more capable than before. They further appeal to the technophile by adding in all kinds of multimedia functions. However, this comes at great cost, driving away the mass market and limiting the consumer base for not only their systems, but the industry as a whole.

Nintendo wants the industry to go in the direction of gaming that's accessible to everyone. In terms of price, in terms of control, in terms of interface, in terms of ease-of-use. Gaming that can appeal to non-gamers just as easily as hardcore gamers. And as a gamer, that's what I want to see. I don't want to see my hobby become increasingly niche, dwindling down the path to obscurity.

I am glad Nintendo has taken the path. There are those who will challenge me, but I stand firm in this belief.Â
