This is a known problem that has affected a very small number of Wii systems.
Most Wii owners probably are aware that the system runs at a higher temperature in its passively cooled standby mode than in its actively cooled running mode. A very small percentage of Wii systems suffer damage to their GPU chips under sufficient heat.
The GPU damage causes "sparkly" graphical artifacts, but the systems typically operate normally otherwise.
This usually happens as a result of high ambient temperatures or blocked ventilation. It only affects a very small number of systems in any circumstances, so it is quite safe to run the Wii in standby mode. It's unlikely to happen to you, and covered by warranty if it does.

Hence is better to leave it on standby so if its indeed defective you get a replacement while still under warranty.

Back up your save games and play something else until your system gets replaced, is my advice.
