What does it say to developers when:

The best selling non-bundled game is Wii Play (5.4) outselling zelda

Wii sports (7.8 ) is best selling game in Japan (not bundled there)

Other top selling games includes WarioWare, Mario Party 8 and Rayman Raving Rabbids

Red Steel (5.5) sells over 1 million worldwide

???

It says we want party games.

It says we can't tell the difference between crap games and good games.

What developers and games do you think this demographic will attract?

i think that most of it is the devs fault, it really can't be helped if they are lazy and make party games just to make a quick buck (of course that is where the business aspect comes in)

Yeah, we need more Wario Ware's and less Metal Gear Solids and Resident Evils... What a stupid thing to say.

It says there is a market for games on a Nintendo console. One previously unheld by the Nintendo name plate.

Most console gamers are casuals... not having games that appeal to them on your console is market suicide.

I can't believe people put down "party games". "Party games" are for social people. You know, people with friends. "Hardcore games" are for lonely people with no friends who sit by themselves all day. Have you seen the South Park episode where they become hooked on Warcraft? Remember the older, fat guy who sat there all day drinking pop, eating junk food, and playing Warcraft by himself? He's a "hardcore gamer".

Is that what you aspire to? lol

Wii Play sold because people wanted the remotes and wasn't bad considering it was only $10. You say party, I say multi-player which personally I like to play games with my friends much more than I do by myself.

only so many party games can be sold on the Wii... No one is going to buy 5 party games when they already have 1 or 2 that are great. I bought Wario Ware as my party game, and im sticking with it.

considering that wii play is only $10 I'm not exactly surprised its selling the most, the only reason I bought it was because I coulndt otherwise find a wii remote and I knew the game would be good fro a few laughs.

You care about your image more than how much fun you're having? ok. Don't worry...you'll grow out of that once you hit puberty.

You obviously didn't get what I meant. I was making fun of you for saying such stupid things and by using your logic. YOU IS IDIOTARD.

1. I wasn't the one who started this thread.

2. Your post implies exactly what I said it did. That we need more party games and less games for the core gamer, which is a stupid thing to say because if it wasn't for the core gamer most of these companies wouldn't be in the position they are today. Especially Nintendo who is giving all of us the middle finger with their recent attitude. There's no question the PS2 was the casual's system of choice last gen but at least it had tons of great stuff for the core gamer as well, the same can not be said of the Wii's game lineup.

Sadly it's true, Nintendo needs to release some of the more hardcore titles so they can look less casual, even if it's their plan.

The delopers have to start making "real" games with plots and gimmics instead of giving us party game after party game

me2002

Exactly.

There was a similar thread a few days back about the Wii's fantastic sales numbers... I'll just copy and paste what I wrote rather than retyping something similar to a post I've already written.

It's a matter of developers catering to a given system's demographic, and that is precisely what we've been seeing in practice for the past 8 months on the Wii. For example, if a huge portion of potential Wii game purchasers are "non gamers" (people that didn't tend to enjoy video games prior to the advent of the Wii,) and they are, coupled with the fact that actually developing the type of game non-gamers are most likely to purchase (pick up for 5 minutes, put down. Rinse, lather, repeat) costs a small fraction of what developing a more traditional "old school" type of game costs then said developers are going to use the Wii as a direct pipeline to pump those sorts of games into the hands of the Wii's massive "non gaming" audience. They're going to reserve their larger-budget, traditional games for the 360 and the PS3 where the audience on that side of the fence is, by and large, far more likely to buy the more "hardcore" fare in massive numbers. That's what has been happening and there is absolutely no reason to believe it won't continue to happen. When you combine this trend with the fact that developers can no longer develop a game for one system and spread it across all three you can pretty easily visualize how the Wii's gaming landscape will develop in the upcoming years. A more traditional game developed for the PS3 and/or the 360 can not trickle down to the Wii, its hardware is prohibitively underpowered and its control scheme far too incompatible with those of its competitors.

Nintendo has managed what no other video game company has managed up to this point in the industry's history, they've targeted and locked onto non gamers (your mother, your sister, your aunt, your grandparents, etc.) with enormous success. Now, to maintain this newfound fanbase they're going to have to continue to supply them with games that cater to their tastes; Wii Sports, Wii Play,Monkeyball, WarioWare, etc... simple distractions that can be picked up and put down in 5 minute bursts. Those aren't the types of games most traditional gamers dig, I know I don't. The Wii is harvesting, and will continue to harvest, that sort of library. It has to, Wii developers need to follow the system's already-established audience to have the greatest chance of being financially successful on the platform.

The third parties are not taking the Wii seriously so they end up making bad games and the casuals don't seem to mind so that the third parties are now getting lazier.

I kinda see your point but hopefully when Devs see just how well the Wii is selling, they'll bring their "hardcore" franchises over and if they sell well (which I'm pretty sure they would) we'll see more hardcore games instead of the party games that are supposedly filling up the shelves. I don't see what the big deal is about party games. I've got 10 Wii games, 2 of them (Wii Sports + Wii Play) are party games and I easily see more single player games than party games.

I hate this argument.

There can only be so many games of a particular genre that eventually one company will make a title stand out so much that other developers will have to increase their standards to match it

Let's use party games, for example. The Mario Party series has been getting stale, yet they continue to sell well. What if DeveloperABC comes along and releases a vastly superior party game and blows away the Mario Party series? Now Nintendo needs to push the Mario Party series until it can surpass the standards DeveloperABC had set. This competition leads to better games.

Even the Wii doesn't have room for a dozen subpar games of a particular genre. The reason some of these efforts are doing well now is because they don't have any competition. Red Steel is a prime example. It sold well not only because it was a launch title, but also because it's a unique game, at least for the Wii. If there was another game like Red Steel that was better, I'm sure that game would have sold more copies and Red Steel would have sold less.

i have xbox360 and a wii. i got an xbox360 on launch and a wii on launch and havnt touched my xbox since i got a wii. the wii's controls are so awesome and games like warioware are extremely fun. i only play xbox for gears of war and that gets boring fast compared to wii games like zelda and super paper mario.

Remember the older, fat guy who sat there all day drinking pop, eating junk food, and playing Warcraft by himself? He's a "hardcore gamer".

Is that what you aspire to? lol

My friends don't play much games except a few, we'd rather go out than stay home and play games although its good for those boring days. The ones who are into gaming like pc games and ps2/ps3. I'm the only one who's got a 360 but I play withpeople I don't get to see often on xbl which is great.

Is that what you aspire to? lol

You care about your image more than how much fun you're having? ok. Don't worry...you'll grow out of that once you hit puberty.

You'd rather play a mini game with your grandma than a game that has depth?

If it's more fun why not? Isn't that the point you were making?

Could the reason why these games, Wii Sports, Wii Play, RRR, Warioware, Red Steel and such sell be because they were designed in a way that works well with the Wii-mote(RRR, Warioware) or be a very highly hyped exclusive game in a genre that people were excited to see what the Wii-rote could do (Red Steel).
