The sheep cannot hope to retain the top spot for long due to the fact that the Wii suffers from two major drawbacks.

1. Lack of third party support.

This is crucial element needed by Nintendo. History has proven via the GC that third party support can make or break a system. Sheep will claim that it is coming citing Capcom making several RE games. But compare this to Wii's competition that is getting RE5, GTAIV, Orange Box, and UT3 while it is left out in the cold. Also, take in to consideration that more development time is put into third party games for the 360 and PS3 (ie. Madden). With the Wii's competitors getting more and better games than it, there is no way it can win system wars. And there are no high cailbur third party titles in the works on the Wii that can compete with the ones listed in sales. GTAIV will sale thousands of 360s and PS3s by itself.

2. No Direct appeal to target market

Who spends the most money on video games? Men from ages 18 to 30. Sheep can talk about how it is more benefitical to expand beyond this demographic, but this is the main market where sales come from. Also, this market is more tech savy than others because of its demands for HD and internet connectivity, two things that the Wii does not provide completely. If you want to sale a video game you make something for this market. Consequently, this market is driven by sex and violence which is something that Nintendo does not do well. No one buys the Wii for a violent game. It sales because of its franchices like Mario and Zelda which are morally water down adventures. I hate to say it but the market finds more mature game elsewhere.

The Wii is only in its current position due to its cheaper cost and the relative newness of its gaming style. When the 360 and PS3 drop enough in price we will see a negative effect on Wii sells. Sheep this is not an avalance your riding. It is only a steep climb to a plateau where there is no where else to go. The best the Wii can do is to become a companion system to the 360 or PS3.

1. Wii is selling great and many devs, including the massive EA, have gone on record saying that they regretted not supporting the console earlier and will move more resources to development for Wii.

2. DS is proof that aiming for all markets can be successful.

Again, nice blog entry. I'd say I'm right in that target demographic.. I don't play games to see sex and violence. I don't watch movies for that either. Guess I'd not a normal 'man'. Oh well :)

1: 3rd party support will grow as the Juggernaut (Wii) continues to out-sell Sony and MS on the sales floors... we have seen this with the xbox360 - the larger the installed-base, the stronger the 3rd party support.

2: Nintendo target market is gamers of all stripes - people young and old and everyone in between who play for fun and enjoyment - not to pander to 'customers' looking for cheap, gratuitous virtual thrills. They are smart enough not to pidgeon-hole themselves that way.

Microsoft made this mistake - ask most people what xbox360 content is all about and they will tell you 'run-and-gun shooters', 'tunnel shooters' or 'tactical shooters'. Microsoft's demographic, in their own words, is mature (lol) gamers who like 'lots of swearing and lots of violence'. Xbox Live is a perfect example of this philosophy at work... Sony Online is trying hard to ape MS's success in that regard. There goes the neighborhood...

To imply that Nintendo is somehow missing out on something great because they prefer not to cater to [that demographic] is - well - you know what it is...

That isn't to say that there are no Mature rated games on Wii - there already are, and there will be more - but I think that Nintendo has made it abundantly clear that that is not the audience that they are trying to reach...

nothing wrong with that...

I think in a year or so people will realize how limited the Wii really is. I found out how limited it was about a month after I bought mine. Its just a matter of time. The Wii is cool until you buy a high-def TV, and I think the vast majority of gamers will have one in the next 2-3 years and they will expect something more. The Wii will eventually become something you keep in your closet and pull out every once in a while for nostalgias sake.

Exactly... too many so-called mature gamers who think 360 is the end-all of gaming because it's got all the shooters.

You know why I like Nintendo? Because they're more concerned with creativity and fun than with sex and violence.

Wii will win this gen for 2 reason.

1. You're not in charge of Nintendo Corp.

2. I just saved a bunch of money by switching to Geico

After a year though, that has yet to pay dividends.

Im not saying it wont happen, but heres the catch:

3rd party devs want their games to SELL. The big drawback of a nintendo console is that you will be competing against nintendo games, generally, some of the best games in the industry. 3rd party games dont sell on nintendo systems as history proves. Will that mean the same for the wii? We dont know but i'll tell you this: 3rd parties feel more secure putting their games on a system where they can sell. The 360 has over 2 dozen million sellers. So this whole "hardware sales = game support" isnt as black and white as sheep make it seem.

Sorry, but I disagree. While I fall just outside that range at 31, I buy losts of games, certainly a heck of a lot more than I did from about 15-25. You know the time when you have little money due to things like working low paying jobs, dating, college, setting up your first apartment. I also can't stand games that focus on extreame violence or sex. Why people have such a hard time understanding that such thinks aren't for everyone I don't know.

As for HD, I have a nice HDTV, both my Wii and 360 are connected to it. Can't honestly say I care too much about the difference when I switch between the two.

Avg Wii player is 29 years old

Reggie met with key third party publishers last week. Wii supplies were talked. Nintendo is on a sales pace with Wii that has never been achieved in this industry. Activision having tremendous success.

Link

More people from the ages 18-30 want the Wii more than any other system for the Holidays. There is another 2 links by two companys that shows this. I will see if I can find them.

Fact is more people want the Wii no matter the age group over any other system.

I strongly disagree with that statement. Not to say Nintendo is kiddie, but even Playstaion average age is less than that. Wait...Maybe they are counting the 80 year old man who play Wii-Bowling? That would be just inaccurate count.

Wii has more 3rd party million sellers than the PS3.

Wii is targeting those crowd as well, just because there aren't guns doesn't mean they aren't good :|

The Apple iPhone didn't make the top 10, ranking #15 overall. Laptops were preferred over desktops 2-to-1 in the 18-34 age group, and all three game systems were on 18-34 lists, with the Wii #8 beating the PS3 (#9) and Xbox 360 (#12).

It's accurate as hell. Even with the prediction that Mass Effect would sell a million. Holy, I didn't even know it was that many. But all you gotta do is read it and you know it's true. All of those games sold well.
