While it is trully great that excellent games like Super Smash Bros Brawl on Wii will have multi-player online modes, I just don't think it is anywhere near a good enough solution for online social gaming on Wii yet.

I have watched my friends play on Xbox Live and one of the single greatest strenghs of that online solution seems to be how easy it is for them to make new friends via the service (and chat to them), who they can then play over and over again across multiple games very easily and whenever they want with no hassle. My friend even had one guy from Germany, who he'd never met in real life previously, come over to visit him in the UK for Christmas and he turned out to be a great laugh (we all had a great time chillin with him). I watch my friend sitting for hours online playing games like Rainbow Six and he spends most of the time just chatting with the people on there, from all over the world. It's also great for people who don't own huge TV's (for split-screen) or multiple controllers or their friends are just too busy to come over and play. It's cyber socialising at it's best.

You just can't really do this as of yet on Wii and I think Nintendo is missing some great opportunites to really create a standout online community on Wii. Multi-player on the couch is brilliant, and still better than online multi-player in my opinion, but an online service like Xbox Live (with voice chat) is far superior to having to get friends codes just to play your mates online and even then you can't actually chat with each other or really have that social party atmosphere.

Nintendo really needs to implement some kind of voice chat system on their online games or they are never going to be trully as good as the could be when it comes to online on Wii...

I love how you can chat with anyone, anytime on xbox live.I always chat with my friends while playing single player games like Oblivion.I tell them to shut up while story points are happening :P

And I can chat while I watch a film or anything.I love it.

On System Wars everything is flaimbait.

I am making a real valid point about the quality of Nintendo's onlines and using Xbox Live as an example to show what is possible and what I would at least like to see from Nintendo...

Yeah the Wii online is pretty broken and primitive. The web browser ok, but trying to scroll precisely using the Wiimote is not too easy, and manually inputting all that text and straining your wrist in the process is no fun. Nintendo is still very ignorant and arrogant towards online gaming. "Gamers don't want to play online" is what they said a few years ago. Sure, on your consoles.

I'm not sure Nintendo ever really believed that gamers don't actually want online as they have been working on creating some form of online service since the early days of the NES. I actually think they fully believe in the potential for online gaming and more. I just don't think they have hit the perfect solution yet, or they certainly haven't implemented it fully if they have the solution.

I just wish they would let us have the obvious features that we all want and that would trully make the online a feature worth using in their games...

Sony and MS took care of online solutions like 5 years ago. Nintendo has repeatedly shown they just don't care. Like only two games that supported the GC adapaters, and then the friends code bs. I mean even DS has voice chat and that's 3 years old. Don't get me wrong, they did ace with the online components in Diamond/Pearl, but why can't they bring that level of online quality over to the Wii? Because they think News and Weather channels are important, I guess...:S

Well it has nothing on XBox Live, but compared to Wii, PSN is quite good. No friends codes, voice chat? Sounds good.

I think Nintendo did a bad job with online. But in some of the big games on XBL like R6 and Halo 2, the community is so bad. I know you can mute them, but still, do they have to yell N!! all the time? Oh well, Halo 3 will let you quickly mute the annoying children and the childish teens....8 DAYS!!!!!!!

I will agree with that. There are way too many Video game beer mussel people on XBL. You know who I am talking about, the 9 year old who talks smack knowing that I am most likely 1,000 miles away (orhe could be down the street for all I know) so he does not have to back up his trash talk. The funny thing is is that most of the people who do this are not only 9 but probably get picked on at school or whatnot and take there frustrations onto XBL and like to tryto play big man since they can't do it anywhere else. Although there are times when these people are just funny. The other one that I hate is the one who thinks we want to hear what music he is listening to and worse that we whant to hear him sing it.

I meant more about the part where you made it seem as if the headset is only used for trash talking. Uh...no. It's used for plenty of things that pertain to the games themselves. Co-op, team deathmatch, stuff like that. Setting up strategies, giving vital info to teammates, etc. And adding XBL Friends is still much more streamlined and universal between all games, not just a few.

Yes, I don't think i ever said Wi-fi connect was better then XBL did i? No, just that everyone says it's terrible... but not because it doesn't work... it works fine... because it doesn't give you some of the things your accustomed to, things that are just frills.

And like the Wii won't have a head set? Sure they were stupid and it didn't come standard... but there will be one.

No. It's bad right now because playing online on Wii, outwith your current friends (if they have a Wii and a copy of the game and give you the friend code etc) is just like playing bots. It may as well be. You can't talk, you don't know who they are. you can't find the same person again after a game. etc etc etc. Outside of the small chance you have all the above options to actually be able to play a friends match the online multi-player options on Wii right now are just crap.

I have seen how much potential there is for online gaming and community, on Xbox Live, and Wii pales in comparison right now...

See the main issue is most "gamers" like socal networks... where as I don't care, I just want to play other people... and don't care at all who they are, nor do I care to hear them whine or taunt, or anyother thing. I just want to play other people online... and the Wii does that. I don't need all the extra frills. And really a vast majority of console gamers are in this boat... I mean just look at how many million xbox 360 owners don't get on live...

If it has chat then that would be a great suprise, but because they have shown the quick comments feature I am suspicious that there is not going to be any form of real chat, and that to me makes the online battles pretty much useless. I don't have any mates who will have the game and therefore I may as well just play against the computer, as it is just as faceless as a person I cannot speak to or interact with in any meaningful way.

I can bring my friends over and play in my house sure, but as an online feature it just doesn't do anything that is any use to gamers like me, who's mates don't have Wii's or wont get Smash Bros, and that is the crime here. I just wanna play online wi some real people and actually interact with them and have that social party atmosphere you get when your mates are round. That, right now, is not an option on Wii or Smash Bros, and that is a crime...

I think Nintendo is trying to make sure that they maintain a family friendly console image which I definitely respect and understand. Who wants there young kids playing a Mario game online only to have some idiot screaming expletives and racist epithets at them. At the same time I think they should control what is allowed using parental settings instead of relying solely on friend codes. Setting 1. only online with friends codes, no chat, Setting 2. can chat with friends via friends code, play with anyone with no code, Setting 3. Can create "gamertag" allows unrestrained online. Have it default to setting 2.

seldom did i find the chat during fighting games useful. The main reason ppl like online for fighting games is because the computer doesn't fight like a person. you might be able to beat all the AI on hardest but that doesn't mean that you'll be able to beat everyone online or be #1 on the ladder. so no, it's not the same.

Ok so the Wii's online is bad to people because you can't trash talk or be a jerk to everyone else...

Not because it doesn't work... or doesn't work well... but because you can't rub other peoples faces in it...?

WTB is wrong with you people...

GundamGuy0

If you are happy playing online in a way that is pretty much exactly the same as playing a bot, but it takes far longer and more hassle to set up, then that is all fine and dandy for you. I am not and if the option to play the way I liked was then included then BOTH of us would be happy. Don't be so self centered. It's better to make me and you and everyone else happy than just the people like you, and that is the fact of it. Xbox Live offers the best all round solution and Wii offers a solution that pales in comparison. Don't use your own personal preference, which in my opinion is a mile off what most other players, hardcore, casual or whatever, would actually choose if they hade a choice, to justify the severly lacking Wii online and chat service.

See this other reply too:

Hey. But as long as you are happy, it must be fine eh!

I agree with you, and I think they could have implemented a better solution to avoid those idiots that sometimes play online. I just wish they did have some form of voice chat though. It adds so much to the online gaming and the whole social aspect of it, when used properly.

I also like you ideas by the way...

From my point of view it is posted because I saw SSBB's online solution and while it is nice to have online play I just wish it had voice chat too, and I wish Wii had voice chat in general. I was not one of those people who ever said SSBB would flop without online, just so you know.
