Simply amazing. Nintendo finally has a winner after 10 years (N64-1996, Wii-2006) but I've always loved their consoles.

VGChartz corrects its monthly numbers to match NPD. That's why VGChartz doesn't appear to be far off. It's off by up to 100,000 each month, but that error is removed when they get "official" NPD or European numbers.

I know that. But there have been several posts lately bashing Vgchartz. Some are even going as far as to say their estimates are off by millions. There was a post the other day claiming that Wii had only sold 13 million consoles and Vgchartz was an utter joke who is biased towards Wii. Then there are people saying PS3 has sold far more than what Vgchartz indicates. Their estimates are usually not that far off, and they do correct the numbers once the official sales numbers come in. People act like Vgchartz is never ever accurate, and that is simply not true. I've ever read posts on system wars replying to people quoting Vgchartz estimates saying "You use vgchartz. Your post doesn't hold water." People have gotten out of hand with the vgchartz bashing.

Well, personally, the problem with VGChartz only crops up with its weekly numbers. I use it all the time for historical data.

[People have gotten out of hand with the vgchartz bashing. AvIdGaMeR444

No they haven't. Vgchartz is crap for PREDICTIVE numbers. Future looking numbers are no better guess than yours or mine. People (and vgchartz) get owned all the time over their 'weekly' sales numbers and monthly estimates. Those numbers might as well be generated by a random number generator.

They are much better at reporting the PAST numbers. That's cause all they do is assemble the real numbers from all reported media trackers. In that regard, they aren't bad because they are one of the few sources that aggregates world and life to date numbers (other than the manufacturers). There is the problem that much of Europes numbers are not available. Nevertheless, they can adjust based upon the manufacturers quarterly numbers.

So....vgchartz threads on 'this weeks sales' = crap. Or this months sales = crap.

Whereas, lifetime to date aren't bad. And when you think about it, the longer and larger the lifetime numbers become the more accurate they will be since it will eventually be manufacturers numbers for every year...which will be equal to retail sales numbers, except for the current year. Ipso facto, the current years estimates will be less important and less a total % error overtime.

Hope that helps

This isn't about the them occasionally getting it right, it's about the fact that it's only occassionally. That pretty much decimates their credibility.

Its been a little more than 1 year. Not 2. So they will manage to sell 100 million in 4 years if it keeps selling at that rate.

The fact of the matter is you can go to Vgchartz.com and read what the total console sales are and those numbers are going to be VERY close.

Only for historical numbers. For weekly numbers, they're off by as much as 60%.

Only the total number are close because anyone can get those. Every 3 months the 3 companies release there total sales numbers. So, now take the 20M that Nintendo just announced and for the next 3 months add the media creat numbers to that number each week, than add the NPD numbers to it each month. Than make up a number somewhere in between the Japan numbers and NPD numbers and add it for Europe. In 3 months Nintendo will release more official numbers and see the magic of being "close" to the real numbers.

They have been off by much more than that before. I remember that they had a game listead as selling 750k in it's first week and by the time NPD was released they had it well over a million. NPD had it at 350k for the month and VGchartz all of a suddent took off 3/4 of the sales of their numbers.

VGCharts is outstanding for historical sales data - however, their weekly data is normally off by a considerable amount.

Those really don't count because Nintendo is the portable market and has been ever since June of 89.

vgchartz is a good source for things like comparing userbases, but anything short term is garbage. We have seen months where their short term estimates were off by hundreds of thousands of units

If my knowledge serves me right, the N64 wasn't its generation's console winner. It was the PS.

i think its a bad thing i dont like the direction the industry will take if nintendo dominates their online strategy is a joke and their focus on casual games could mean a decline in the sorts of games we have come to expect

I meant that they weren't winners since the N64 launched, but went to the top with their new console.
