Japanese sales tracker Media Create just released the Japanese console hardware sales numbers for last week. And unfortunately, the Wii U isnt looking any better in Nintendos homeland.

The Wii U sold 9,500 units last week and came in at 6th place, behind all other consoles with the exception for the Xbox 360 and the original Wii.

  1. Nintendo 3DS LL (47,985 units sold)
  2. PlayStation Vita (27,553)
  3. Nintendo 3DS (21,454)
  4. PlayStation 3 (20,676)
  5. PSP (12,721)
  6. Wii U (9,539)
  7. Wii (1,323)
  8. Xbox 360 (543)

The Wii U is failing because Nintendo is screwed, people realized Nintendos ways of selling underpowered hardware for a premium price with no games aside from 1 st party titles.

The Wii literally had no games for the longest periods of time, 2010-2012 was literally spans of 5-6 months of no games. I mean games in general, quality aside.

Nintendo's lack of wanting to evolve bit them in the *** and MS/Sony are moving on while Nintendo is playing catch up.

Why by a Wii U when people can either just wait for the PS4/Xbox 3 or by a 360/PS3 for the price of a Wii Deluxe?

360/PS3 can do more, and have a lot more games than the Wii U ever will have, especially considering the Wii U is dead once next gen starts later this year.

Japans consumers realize this and are saving their cash for when next gen hits, Wii U is a current gen system by technology but a next gen one by definition.

In reality, it is not a next gen console.

Pretty much the only thing that saved Nintendo with the original Wii was the soccer mom/grandpa Wii Sports and Wii Fit craze.

Casuals loved it but gamers didn't, barely anyone played it. The console had the most systems sold yet on average its games sold way less than lower usebased 360/PS3.

Now that the casuals are gone, Nintendo wants the core gamer back. Why should we come back when they left us?

The way people see it is, F*** Nintendo

Nothing surprising here. The console is pretty much dead unless a miracle happens which is extremely unlikely at this point. The WiiU is definitely out of the competition IMO. I'm just waiting for the PS4 and 720 to release and finish it off.

Nintendo banked on the Wii phenomenon happening again and it didn't. Casuals are too busy with their tablets to give a sh*t about the WiiU and hardcore gamers are laughing at its outdated specs. Nintendo should cut their losses and focus attention on the 3DS.

The Wii is indeed the exception but that's only because of the casuals. NES and SNES are somewhat irrelevant because Playstation didn't exist yet. Besides NES and SNES were ages ago so that's not really helpful for your argument.

SEGA and NeoGeo existed back then. It's not like Nintendo didn't have any competition at all back then.

And they are too proud / stupid to not cut the price and take a loss on the system and make it up on games and accesseries like everyone else does. I agree with Pach. Iwata is a terrible CEO who clearly has no clue how todays market works.

Unlike Wii U, PS VITA which has far superior hardware and eventually will catch up with 3ds as soon as a few more good games are released... Wii U does not has the upper hand when it comes to hardware. It's already outdated and true next gen systems are not even released yet. Thus there's no potential in the system and all hope is diminished... only fanboys will invest in such machine. I think it was a mistake for Nintendo to rush and release first as it was a mistake to continue with the Wii brand. Imho... they'd better abandon the stupid Wii brand and invest in a new serious platform. It would be sad to see Nintendo out of buisness.

It just needs games.

The vita has skyrocketed in sales, because they released GAMES in japan, that people wanted. Once the WiiU does the same, itll happen. But there has literally not been one major release on the system since launch, so anyone who was interested in what is available, has bought it already. Its not that hard to understand

The WiiU has great potential. It just needs GAMES.

When Pikmin 3, WiiFit U and Wonderful 101 come out itll sell much better. And then during the holiday if they can get a big game like Mario Galaxy 3 out + a Windwaker remake that would be great

the sad thing is at the launch my friend bough FOUR Wii Us with hopes of selling them for prophet.   I'm scared to ask him how that went cause he is still probably still pissed.  Fact is Wii U has no games which means no reason to purchase one unless you need a new paper weight.

They're in no threat of going out of business completely. They've got huge cash reserves. The Wii U could fail as hard as the Sega Saturn and they wouldn't go under as a company. They could, however, be forced out of hardware production. To me that would be a good thing. They aren't a big enough company to subsidize hardware and so long as they aren't their console hardware isn't going to be as good as those that can. They should get out of the console manufacturing business and focus on software. If we really need 3 hardware manufacturers (Not sure we do. 2 is probably enough) then perhaps a Samsung, Apple, or someone like that could come along and fill the void. Companies like that have got the money to subsidize and subsidizing equals great hardware at an affordable price for us.

It's over 9000...

I don't know when was the last time a Nintendo home console sold well in Japan, tbh.

I think Wii got some sales due to being a "global phenomenon", but the last "traditional" Nintendo home system to do well over there was Super Famicom aka SNES, as we know it.

And even that was mainly so because it had many good (J)RPGs.

It's a different culture over there and it reflects in the game and game system sales. (altho there was recently more interest in some popular Western titles or atleast that's the impression I got)

Right now they are not playing anything. They are laying in bed thinking about Bioshock Infinite.

Japanese sales tracker Media Create just released the Japanese console hardware sales numbers for last week. And unfortunately, the Wii U isnt looking any better in Nintendos homeland.

The Wii U sold 9,500 units last week and came in at 6th place, behind all other consoles with the exception for the Xbox 360 and the original Wii.

  1. Nintendo 3DS LL (47,985 units sold)
  2. PlayStation Vita (27,553)
  3. Nintendo 3DS (21,454)
  4. PlayStation 3 (20,676)
  5. PSP (12,721)
  6. Wii U (9,539)
  7. Wii (1,323)
  8. Xbox 360 (543)

I like how Vita is climbing up steadily... just wait for the soul sacrifice next month and you'll see how Vita is "dead"... prophets my @ss

Unlike Wii U, PS VITA which has far superior hardware and eventually will catch up with 3ds as soon as a few more good games are released..

and then pokemon xy will drop and the gap between the two will become a valley

Nintendo's home systems always sell awfull in Japan. Just take a look at the Gamecube or the Nintendo 64.

I think Nintendo has branded themselves as the maker of cheap hardware. The opposite of the effect of what Apple has accomplished.
