Thats actually good news in some way, it's same how PS3 online works and how ony plan it, this also opens door for steam on Wii U same as it opened it on PS3 :) Thru Nintendo at least could implement some unified ID system and messages system same as PSN do

If they add steam to the wii u then it would be great but that is not going to happen. If they let you make your own server that would be great but i doubt that is going to happen either. The net work is nintendo's and they own the platform. The only reason they are letting 3rd parties do the online per game is because they just want to do the online store not the online gaming.
No, you think in wrong way, Wii U will have ethernet port and WiFi (probably?) that allows to connect consoel to Internet. Internet is a free network that any device can do the same thing, but yea as a platform owner Nintendo ca nset rules what is allowed or not, they can start there game networking support and order people to use it, like MS do, but thats expensive solution. They may pick Sonys way, that developer can do wahtever htey want with internet connection and they will only provide support services like unified ID and communication, they might do nothing at all.
Reason why Valve actually include Steam in to Portal 2 for PS3 is not because they was thinking that it would be awesome, they been forced to do so, because Sony don;t give any game server support only a unification support. Sony didnt give so they needed to make there own, but what to make another service f they got existing one that is most advance service on PC? Same thing goes to Wii U if they go Sony way with openness, they wuill be forced to use Steam if Nintendo won't give them any server support
Live mixed up people minds about game networks, "online" is not part of console hardware or even software like Live trying to make you think, it's a Internet that you already pay to access to your ISP and you can access service that is inside, it does not need to me platfrom owner to manage it they may allow developers to use there infrastructure that already exists for PC, Steam for example.
