hi everyone except that idiot Richard.

im trying to decide what would be best for my hypothetical son, Richard. He is fresh to high school and likes video games, but he also has to do homework.

which do you think is gonna be the best? A wii u, or a cheap pc with ubuntu, then the linux steam client?

in terms of price they're gonna work out about the same. im willing to budget a bit more for a linux box because it will give him a machine dedicated for his homework. i like that i can spend the money on hardware instead of

Wii U can play the Wii's library, here is the list here:

188 wii u games some of which are unreleased - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_U_games

1222 wii games some of which are unreleased - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wii_games

Linux is emerging

185 games with native steam linux support - http://store.steampowered.com/search/?snr=1_230_linux__12&term=#category1=998&os=linux&sort_order=ASC&page=1

dosbox works easily on linux. so there are all these thousands of games too - http://www.dosbox.com/comp_list.php?letter=a

I also think it would be good for my son to get exposure to linux at a tender age. but i heard that nintendo make the best games for children, and i dont want to give my son something he can't have fun with. then again, theme hospital was awesome and that's a dosbox game. but the wii u gamepad is kind of a homework tool because he can wikipedia with the tv off in bed.

i don't know guys, what would you do?

i was wondering about that. wii u should run all wii u games perfectly but the pc will need an upgrade eventually.

one upgrade possibility is just installing windows.

A Linux box.  Not only is the WiiU a complete and utter disaster, but you could be smart and also teach "Richard" Java on the Linux box so he can write his own PC, MAC, Linux, and Android games...

such a terrible mistake.

hypothetically about $400. but i know sometimes if you spend $100 more, 25% more - that sometimes it works out being about 50% faster. so hypothetically i would be flexible on budget but its not really supposed to be a gaming beast.

Why do you think so?

he wasn't  planning  on getting a  linux box but "cheap pc with ubuntu".   he isn't teaching his"  son" programming , that 's best  left to a  teacher or a university if  he choose to do that.

A cheap PC with Ubuntu is a Linux box. Learning on your own is perfectly acceptable. You can spend all day playing with our wii (pun intended), or you can play games AND expand your mind at the same time.farrell2k

Actually yeah. This is the way to go if you're playing the long game, MSXBOX ... whatever.

When I was growing up I had to make do with gaming on the family PC. Sometimes I broke it, and had to fix it myself - it basically gave me the skillset of a desktop bench computer tech by the time I was 17. It's a great skill to have and has served me really well.

Plus if you build it right, you can be upgrade ready. Usually works well if you have other PCs in the house, which it sounds like you do.

Plus I own a Wii U ... in terms of games. Well, I've played everything I wanted to so there is nearly nothing for me on both systems. However, for someone fresh to gaming either side should offer plenty of fun.

[You're a terrible father John_Matherson

You have made a mistake. It is your father that is terrible. He failed to teach you reading comprehension. I talk about a hypothetical son, not a real one - therefore I am not a father, therefore I cannot be a terrible father.

You poor thing. Life must be so challenging when essentially skills like reading comprehension are missing.

lol. i can't believe wii u can't stand up to linux. quality of the libraries look about the same.

1. your son can upgrade the hardware in his linux box later if he wants more graphics. linux victory

2. your son can upgrade the OS in his linux box if he wants a bigger library. PC victory.

this last part is a guess. but, lord gaben said AAA titles were coming to steam on linux. im wondering, considering the level of multiplat support for wii u ...  could it be that linux gets better multiplat than wii u as we move forward?

That's like saying his son can buy a PS4 later if he wants better graphics and a bigger library. Wii U victory. A $400 PC won't even play current games well. It also doesn't even have Windows, so it is extremely limited on what it can play, period. Spend $800 on the PC and put windows on it, and the PC wins easily, though.

Also, of course linux will get better multiplats than Wii U moving forward. I expect it to get better multiplats than the PS4/Xbox One, too. Just not on a $400 PC.

lol. look at my sig? see that radeon 7950 for half the price of a ps4? yeap. now compare that to the ps4 upgrade you're touting, you know the kind of upgrade where none of his wii / wii u games are going to work at all - that's not even comparable. plus that is a victory of the ps4 over the wii u not a victory of wii u over pc.

a $400 pc can't play games amazingly, but it would be stronger than wii u.

not having windows i already covered that, see my number 2.

as for your last comment, yeah that's great and of course i agree. however, i can see what tc has done here. he has put the weakest console up against a gimped pc on purpose, just to see if even a gimped pc can be more attractive than wii u.

i think that it can.

You would have to upgrade that pc to the point that it is no longer gimped to do that, though. PC gaming is clearly the better experience and the long term costs are less than console gaming, but if you can only afford to put $400 up front, it's better to just stick with the consoles. That won't even get you a mid-range rig.
