WiiConnect24 isn't bad. I like the interface. It feels like Nintendo. The Vote channel is a nice addition. Nintendo will be fine with thier online strategy.
My only gripe is the friend codes. I think a gamer name would have been much easier to do, but maybe we will see some changes with this.

The press still wants to think the Nintendo is trying to do the same as Sony or Microsoft with their consoles. Different strategies, different online philosophies. In short, people just want something to complain about.
I think Wii connect is fine. Although I never really expected that much out of it. You got the VC, and a few channels throw in a channel for upcoming game video and demos and they almost have their bases covered. They don't need all the same stuff and Sony and MS, but they do need online play. As long as they keep things simple they shouldn't have too much to patch. Friends codes have got to go. They really need buddy lists.
At least Wii24Connect can be upgraded, to bad they can't do the same with the hardware.
   I have two VC games, so I don't see myself personally running out of room on the Channels anytime soon.    That said, I wish the Wii did more with its online. WarioWare, Wii Sports, Super Monkey Ball. All those would have made great online enabled games. Or offer some other things on the WiiConnect. I don't know. Afte being on Live for three years, the Wii's online seems really lacking right now.    Kinda feels like Nintendo stuck it out there, not really knowing what to do with it or how to use it. I hope they get it more together soon though, because gaming online adds a huge depth to games that its hard seeing all that potential going to waste.
I think you misunderstood them. They aren't bashing WiiConnect24, they just think there are things Nintendo isn't doing that they promised they would be doing. To an extent, I agree with some of their thoughts, especially the sub channel stuff.
I didn't read the article but I have a Wii. Technically Wii connect is not an "online" service so much as a download service. You download the news, weather, VC, whatever but have no real online play.
However, I like it and think it's a cool idea. Maybe online gaming will come and maybe it won't. I hardly play online anyway. Hell, I bought the PS2 NA and played Socom 1 online like crazy and got tired of it and stopped using it. I like the idea of online gaming in general, but don't really care that much.
I don't believe the success of the Wii will hinge on online play.Â

Sorry my original post made zero sense. What I meant was I don't really care about those minor gripes, while some are interesting points. I'd be fine if I just had some online capable Wii games.
