will 2008 be too late for sony?

There is no doubt now that sony will be crushed in 2007. 100 dollar price drop and they could not even outsell 360, not for a month even. next NPD sales will include the 360 price drop and also get an extra boost from bioshock. The month after that will be Halo 3. The Wii is a force of nature. And what will happen when the big 3 arrive?

There are only 3 confirmed megaton system sellers this year. Halo 3, Smash Bros Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy. the rest of the games might be great, even better than those, but they are unproven, unlike those three franchises that ALWAYS sell extremely well. They are guaranteed quality titles that are well known throughout the world.

Ok, this holiday, ps3 will get slaughtered, its common knowledge by now. the 100 dollar drop that they barely could afford, set them back even more. and no people seem to be waiting for that price drop to buy ps3, this drop proves it. And consider that even 399 isnt a mass market price. sony will always be dead last when it comes to price, and by a large margin. when the wii is at roughly 18 million (or more) by march next year, 360 around 15-16, and ps3 about 7-8, will devs really bother making ps3 exclusives, or ps3 games at all? they may have started a bad cycle here that they cant step out of. already now, we hear reports of devs switching their resources towards wii, and when they need better hardware, they will go to 360. sure mgs 4 will probably boost ps3 sales a bit, and so will mgs when it comes out 2008-2009, but do you really think we will see a new pricedrop during the first half of 2008? and both wii and 360 can just lower their price accordingly. in 1-2 years time, the ps3 will be at 399, which isnt even mass market price.

I agree with you completely. The PS3 isn't going to go away/fail per se. However, you cannot ignore the numbers and the price point. Launching late and with the highest cost means that Sony can never compete on price and can always be matched on the downward price curve by MS and N. Which leaves competing on value. However, there is no evidence that the PS3 will substantially beat X360 in graphics and it can't compete with the Wii in the casual market. Which leaves them nowhere to go. There franchises will literally keep them from going under but massive loss of market share is now unavoidable. Sometime in 2008 the combined Wii/360 sales will exceed their total sales last generation. Meaning every unit Wii/360 sells after that comes from Sony.

Sony could still do decent in absolute numbers of units sold, but this generation isalready guaranteed to be adisaster for Sony with one of the largest market share collapses for a product ever.

I'm a Ps3 owner, but things aren't great for Sony right now. The only Ps3 game I have on my Fall wishlist is Unreal tournament 3, and that's only because I don't have a PC powerful enough to run it. Call of Duty 4 will be multiplatform, but you know the Xbox live community will be much larger and better. That leaves only Haze, which isn't looking too promising from the latest movies.

Sigh, I'll just have to play Unreal and Resistance until 08' rolls around with Metal Gear solid4 and Killlzone. It's going to be a long wait. :(

i think finally in 2008 ill get my 3rd replacement ps3 back :(

The Sony PS3 have had bad news from the start. They really messed up the Playstation gaming brand. But at least you can watch Blu Ray movies and record tv shows.
