I know indie devs have been creative, but the 7th gen has mostly been a shooter gen as far as mainstream releases go. The 6th gen had great shooters but also had lots of other genres too.

I'm not morally opposed to violent M-rated games. I find them fun. But need every other game involve shooting people?

If you look at the Xbox 360 top 100 scored of all time Metacritic page, you'll see that about half of the games are shooters. Another quarter are brawling or swordfighting games. And rest are different genres.

Are we going to repeat this trend in this current gen?

(IMO, 8th gen will probably be less shooter-driven than 7th gen, but way more shooter driven than the 6th gen)

There were a lot of non-shooters last gen, even most 360 exclusives had no shooting in them.

When it comes to shooters on the Xbox 360s top 100 list, it's more like 1/3 actually.

I don't think shooters are bad at all, the issue isn't there too many of them just that there's a lot less games thus far, but it is still early in the gen, things didn't pick up last gen until the end of the second year. Still, this gen isn't the rat race that last gen was.

The 7th gen had hundreds of good, great and amazing games not in the shooter genre though.

I was thinking it's a more open-world gen... But shooters are still a dominant genre this gen.

I disagree that last gen was a shooter gen (except maybe for 360). Games like the Souls series, Valkyria Chronicles, Metal Gear Solid 4, The Last of Us and Ni No Kuni are the real highlights of last gen imo, neither of which is a shooter. There were plenty of excellent shooters (CoD MW, Halo series, Killzone 2, etc) but in the end those games remain in the shadow of TLoU and Dark Souls imo.

Probably MMO gen. Because consoles catch up to whatever the PC's doing. I'm not saying it condescendingly. But once consoles are able to have 120 people online they will

Maybe. I'm just expecting a myriad of more sequels, occasional throwaway standalone IPs, and sure, maybe some mmos.

But mmos are old. That's 2004 material.

I have no idea. Maybe just a shit ton of experimental games using VR, who knows.,

Yeah the popularity of shooter mechanics last gen was overwhelming

I mean Sony had 3 separate major first party shooter franchises going at once

-Killzone 2 and 3

-Resistance 1, 2, and 3

-Uncharted 1, 2, and 3

Microsoft had 2 major shooter franchises going at once

Halo 3, ODST, Reach

Gears of War 1, 2, and 3

Then you had Call of Duty dominating everything in the sales department with other 3rd parties trying grab that audience themselves.

I hope we don't see a repeat of this. It pretty much all just came from Call of Duty's popularity. I'd say all of the above games took inspiration from that series.

Shooters will always be the dominate game because the "causal" and people in general don't mind play a game where the objective is just to kick in the door and take names. But to be honest last gen was pretty varied. I personally hoping there can be more good super hero games. A shame that Batman Arkham series was the only good super hero series to survive.

The blockbuster bets will still be built around violent action games, and a lot of them will involve guns, some will settle for swords.

Beyond that if you want something that doesn't have guns you will be able to find it quite easily.

Last gen wasn't even a shooter gen, it's just those were the games that made the biggest waves in the media because of their heavy block-buster marketing.

I'm a fan of shooters, but the only shooters I played were some of the CoDs, the Halo and Crysis games.

I say its going to be "Souls" game driven. More and more there will be clones of these games as they are grabbing the gamers right now.

Its one of the questions I get from people every so often. Why do the popular games have such violence in them? I always say, why question the content of the game? Ask the gamers why they like it so much? And to that I ask, why is it there is always a hit hospital drama and cop drama on prime time TV? Life and death. The highest stakes bring the most compelling stories. Gaming is no different. Life and death, which is usually violent i.e. combat. High stakes, that's what is compelling.
