Please stop with this, some sources are saying it cost's $300, some are saying it is a blu-ray drive. Nobody knows for sure about this. Plus, these HD-DVD (or blu-ray) players are suppose to come out in about a year from now...

In a year or two when BR players go down to the sub $400 range, the PS3 will lose its biggest selling point. I dont think Sony can drop the console price enough (if they ever do) to make the PS3 an attractive buy.  Also, the drive in the PS3 will be horribly outdated by then, when 3rd or 4th gen Blu Ray players are on the market.

I was just going to say, "A 300 dollar Blu-Ray player is what is going to hurt the PS3"

if a 200-300 dollar blu ray or hd dvd player comes out its definately gonna hurt ps3/blu ray player sales...most companies will have to work fast if the player is good and all that, they'll have to drop prices, if the player sux then...not so much...

How would the PS3 lose its biggest selling point?

In a year or two the PS3's portfolio will have many compelling titles--blu-ray will just be an added benefit.

More studio support on Blu-Ray equals more money from licensing, and should equal cheaper standalone units sooner than you think. And hopefully, Blu-Ray PC drives will go down in price too.

i really don't belive that enough people are buying the ps3 for the blueray to make any real difference.  so, no i dont' think it'll make a significant difference.  i think that most of the ps3 buyers are just buying it for the games and are just putting up with this unneccisary bluray player they now own.

Look around these threads and you will see a number of PS3 owners exalting the power of the Blu Ray. At $600 the PS3 is cheaper than any BR player on the market, and that is one of the selling/bragging points for the PS3. Some (a lot?) people justified the purchase of the system because of the BR.

In years time or so the PS3 could very well be an expensive Blu Ray player that also plays games. Not really much value in that. As for people putting down the cash by then to play games, thats another story.

Correction: in a few years time or so the PS3 could very well be an expensive blu-ray player that also plays awesome games like MGS4, FFXIII, White Knight Story, Socom 4, God of War III,...shall I go on?

Neither format is well, really. It depends on how you look at the numbers. BR outsells HDDVD in movies, but HDDVD players are outselling BR players. I wish i could find the link, but I saw that in the month of March, HDDVD players outsold BR players 4 to 1. If you check Amazon you will see three HDDVD players in the top 20 DVD players sold and only one BR player.

Regardless of anything i have just said, though, total sales of both formats in titles and hardware only make a small portion of the total sales in all of DVD. I hope neither catch on honestly. Two competing formats right now is a bad thing. We just now got to the point in the last 6 months where some studios no longer produce VHS. How long will it take for DVDs to be surpassed. It will take too long and I dont think neither of the HiDef formats have the legs to do it.

no it cant, player dont mean crap if there is barely any support for it. There are too many companies supporting bluray compared to HDDVDs its just a matter of time. Many more movie studios support bluray

LOL this is going to blow Blu-ray out of the water. When Johnny Walmart goes to replace his DVD player and see's he can get a fancy new "HD-DVD" with that "crazy ole Matrix flick" blazing on an affordable LCD in super stunning visual quality all you will hear from elitist Blu-ray fanboys is "buhhh duhh Joe Sixpack has doomed us to duhh worser format just like in dee old betamax days" I for one will cheer because HD-DVD has produced quality discs from day one not rushed out junk like Blu-ray. THE LOOK AND SOUND OF PERFECT! Score one for the little guy!

ya think?  Though you might ask yourself, how well did UMDs do for the first few months of the PSP?  How well do they do now?  Is it possible that PS3 owners are only buying Bluray movies as a fad because a lack of good games?

Food for thought.

actually, the actual translation of what they got their hands on was something along the lines of HD-DVDBlu-Ray, and i don't believe walmart issued an offical statement. this just might hurt by bringing all hd formats to the masses though
