I was reading Nintendo Power where I came across the rating system and I saw this rating.

The rating says

ADULTS ONLY
Titles rated AO (Adults Only) have content that should only be played by persons 18 years and older. Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity.

Is there ever a game that can really meet this? I mean it has to be extremely provocative and extremely violent. I would be impressed if a company could pull this off even though the game would be considered controversial. I believe the game would create a new genre.

I know Manhunt 2 almost did it but come on that doesn't truly meet what the rating means. I'm interest on everybody's thoughts on this. Should it be allowed or never allowed.

AO will most likely never see the light of day exept 1 or 2 titles only avalible over the internet, because if a game is AO most retailers will refuse to stock the game...and thats basicly suiside for sales if its only on the net.

The AO rating is pretty much reserved for times of extreme political pressure from family watchdog groups who think that parents can't do anything besides pick their noses and that Grand Theft Auto ran every concentration camp while organizing the 9/11 attacks. I suggest that we get rid of the rating, as it serves little purpose and these games can't really get sold. Stores won't stock them, and companies keep them from consoles.

why?

Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony came out during the Manhunt 2 issue and said that they wouldn't allow developers to release AO games on their systems.

This is an actual game apparently, and it managed to spawn a sequel as well as addons.

Tekken and rape, the Japanese truly are innovating.

It would be hilarius to see the outcry if this was released to the US console market, look what Mass Effect got, and that was nothing.

Never on consoles. MS, Sony, and Ninty won't allow them.

A typical AO game is usually interactive pornography. Which, just like its movie cousin, won't be stock by family retailers including all the major chains like Gamestop, Walmart and Best Buy.

Steven Speilberg isn't going to make a XXX film, neither would any skilled dev make an AO game. They are usually low-budget unrated titles found on the internet.

Besides, paying money for pixel pron is sorta freaky...

Illusion, the developer behind Battle Raper and Sexy Beach, has a policy not to export games to North America or Europe. The -ONLY- way to obtain them in those locations is through piracy, mind you, and there exists a niche community of modders that translates and uncensors the games for said pirates. Yaar. Not my cup of tea, but I'm not going to judge.

I've never played a game that's rated "M" for nudity (toplessness) but I am aware that it's becoming less of a taboo in games. I think any representation of genitalia in games, no matter how tasteful, would immediately herald an "AO" rating, though, which is unfortunate. I think the greatest problem facing humanity today is people who deal only in extremes and ignore intent completely, but Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft aren't to fault for making their decision. To recant what others have said in my own words, the majority of games that would bear an "AO" rating are rape simulators.

well if they put the chainsawing and arm ripping off of gears 2 with the hooker scenes of gta4 that would just about warrant an AO.

Severe violence, sex, or things that are just 'taboo' in our culture would land an AO. Publishers and devs both know this, so are pretty much always careful to do whatever it takes to avoid an AO rating. Some European countries and Australia are more generous with their AOs, but those tend to go relatively ignored if they happen.

Does it even matter? Who cares about nudity in a video game anyway? As if there arent enough readily accessable sources of porn in the world. You gotta be pretty despirate to want it in a video game. As for violence, I think we already have that covered with titles like Gears of War and Resident Evil. Adult situations? Got that too, how about GTA? Im just not sure what an AO rating is actually going to add to gameplay, etc. Its like Adult only comic books lol...never understood that one either.

Did everyone forget about GTA: SA. the game went AO after the hot coffee mod was uncovered for basically no reason. the hooker scenes in gta4 are worse and dont warrant AO. I have indeed seen SA stocked in retailers with the AO on it though.
