Assuming neither MS, Ninty and Sony will fully embrace DD and I highly doubt they will do you think Blu-ray will be used by everyone or is the aging DVD still gonna be the format of choice? Maybe a new disc format will be chosen instead? What do you guys think?Swift_Boss_A
Well unless Ninty or MS are willing to pay sony for using Blu ray then no but they could still use the DVD with an alternative being DD
I think all the next gen systems will go blu-ray.
Does anybody know how much sony makes off blu-ray anyways?
Nobody is going to use Blu-Ray or DVD. It will be all downloadable or streaming. They will still have those DVD drives to play previous generation games but not use it for new games.
3-4 years from now, Hi-speed broadband is going to be more prelevant in the world.

Sony does not own Blu-rayMS will use 50GB Blu-Ray but Sony will probably use Holographic Discs or use high capacity 250GB Blu-Ray Discs (or 400 GB Blu-ray discs which have already been announced by Pioneer for 2012 release)Nonstop-Madness
I think sony should just stick with blu-ray next gen and put in a faster drive. I hope they don't use the holographic disc, the ps4 would probably cost like $800.

Not to mention the game cost.if consoles become more like pc than blu ray would still be not need. just look the majority of pc games like crysis theyre amazing and are still on dvd. so if the console hardware becomes as powerful or be more powerful than pcs today blu ray can still be overlooked like how it is now

Not to mention the game cost. True, a 12 or 16x Blu-Ray drive with a 400 GB Blu-Ray disc is beast.Link please? Sony first off cannot offer an invite to the blu ray consortium because they do not own blu ray and are not the only company in the blu ray consortium, 2nd off i've never heard of microsoft asking or being asked to join the blu ray camp.I'm thinking Blu-Ray is the way to go next gen. I'm surprised MS didn't accept the invite to join the Blu-Ray Association when Sony offered.

I don't see Sony changing their disc format. Blu ray is still trying the crack into household worldwide and I see Sony pushing it in thier next console whenever that will be.
For some reason I see the 360 still using the same format, or maybe an enhanced version. For some reason I don't see it being Blu ray though.
Nintendo will probaby go DVD something
New formats are expensive to introduce, if Blu-ray is dominant at the time of the next consoles then it wouldn't be unrealistic to expect it to be used.
As I said in the past Blu-ray's use this generation is way premature, it only served to help ensure its position as the next dominant format. Other than getting a install base in PS3 its use this gen is next to pointless, console hardware just isn't at a point to take advantage of it in the majority of games.
Next gen I'm 100% confident to say a post DVD format will be needed.
[QUOTE="TheGrat1"]If MS is smart they will use HD-DVD.f50p90That wouldn't be smart at all, it's extinct. It would be cheaper to just use Blu Ray Actually, its even cheaper than Blu-ray because its extinct. HD-DVD drives go for what, 40 bucks on Ebay? It holds 30 gigs, that will be enough for most next-gen games. All they need to do is develop a faster drive and they'll have a cheap medium for their next console.

It sells so cheap because it's almost worthless now. But to bring it back would be expensive..

It will, but it won't be enough to kill retailers
If Microsoft does use Blu-ray, they'll be paying Sony every time they sell a console.
urdead18
Sony does not completely own blu-ray. if i remember correctly, you can see other electronic manufacturers sell blu-ray to retailers
It seems logical. Microsoft will have to use it, or go all digital distribution. Nintendo is over their "make their own storage format" phase, so they might as well use Blu-Ray. Sony will just announce their next storage format and hope it sticks.Willy105i dont think sony will announce another format, BR is tested to hold 200gigs and th eps3 can read it, BR with be here next gen but HDD space will big much much bigger

its too soon for thatmicrosoft = blu ray
nintendo = its own media
sony = next format available. sony has always had a new format for each of its consoles. i think it will stay the same, considering the PS3's "10 year life"
Realistically, no company will go fully DD next gen. I do expect the DVD to phase out though for gaming, does that mean Bluray will become the norm? Not necesseraly.
See MS could either take Bluray as their next format, or they could produce thei own Disc technology (pretty much like nintendo did last and current gen) with more storage capacity then DVDs and about the same as Blu-ray.
Anything is possible, by making their own tech MS would save money from licensing and such.
1. Who cares? Seriously, who cares what may or may not be the tech in machines X years down the road. Makes no diff to SW this gen.
2. If you do care, the first thing you need to agree on is when does the next gen happen.
3. DD and BD/DVD are not the only options. This is especially true if your answer to #2 is more than a couple of years from now.
4. LOL at a cow making this thread. Why do you care now? It will be another 6-8 yrs from now right?;)
