Assuming neither MS, Ninty and Sony will fully embrace DD and I highly doubt they will do you think Blu-ray will be used by everyone or is the aging DVD still gonna be the format of choice? Maybe a new disc format will be chosen instead? What do you guys think?

It seems logical. Microsoft will have to use it, or go all digital distribution. Nintendo is over their "make their own storage format" phase, so they might as well use Blu-Ray. Sony will just announce their next storage format and hope it sticks.

Well unless Ninty or MS are willing to pay sony for using Blu ray then no but they could still use the DVD with an alternative being DD

Nintendo is hardly using the space on DVD's, and there is room to Dual Layer. Assuming thing play out the same, I think Nintendo will go DVD again, but the next Xbox will probably be Blu.

Mostly likely they will both use BR since at the time of their consoles, the market could of gone either way. Now BR is the definite HD disc of choice.

Blu-Ray is the only logical step. Unless MS decided to have their own format, which would be pointless, especially considering the hand they had in Blu-Rays creation

I don't know if it willl be blu Ray, but it sure as hell won't be DVD, unless consoles turn into PCs and you have to install games. Or maybe they will work that Cloud gaming into the main stream :o

MS will use 50GB Blu-Ray but Sony will probably use Holographic Discs or use high capacity 250GB Blu-Ray Discs (or 400 GB Blu-ray discs which have already been announced by Pioneer for 2012 release)

I think sony should just stick with blu-ray next gen and put in a faster drive. I hope they don't use the holographic disc, the ps4 would probably cost like $800.

Actually, seeing how consoles are today, id imagine MS could stay with DVD and use installs, but i doubt they will.

Either way, expect huge from both Sony and MS

if consoles become more like pc than blu ray would still be not need. just look the majority of pc games like crysis theyre amazing and are still on dvd. so if the console hardware becomes as powerful or be more powerful than pcs today blu ray can still be overlooked like how it is now

I'm thinking Blu-Ray is the way to go next gen. I'm surprised MS didn't accept the invite to join the Blu-Ray Association when Sony offered.

True, a 12 or 16x Blu-Ray drive with a 400 GB Blu-Ray disc is beast.

Guys I really dont see Sony changing the disc format next gen, they will most likely be using the Blu-ray disc but with more space. It would REALLY stupid of them not to stick with blu-ray for another gen. Seeing as how so far everyone is saying MS will go Blu I think Sony made the right decision to go with blu-ray this gen, isnt Sony part owner of the blu-ray format? I mean Blu-ray is what is is today thanks to Sony and the PS3.

Link please? Sony first off cannot offer an invite to the blu ray consortium because they do not own blu ray and are not the only company in the blu ray consortium, 2nd off i've never heard of microsoft asking or being asked to join the blu ray camp.

i would imagine it would have to do blu ray or something with a large storage because more and more people are going to be moving to 7.1 surround and since its already available (even though most games dont take advantage of this) on the blu ray, it would just make sense.

I don't see Sony changing their disc format. Blu ray is still trying the crack into household worldwide and I see Sony pushing it in thier next console whenever that will be.

For some reason I see the 360 still using the same format, or maybe an enhanced version. For some reason I don't see it being Blu ray though.

Nintendo will probaby go DVD something

New formats are expensive to introduce, if Blu-ray is dominant at the time of the next consoles then it wouldn't be unrealistic to expect it to be used.

As I said in the past Blu-ray's use this generation is way premature, it only served to help ensure its position as the next dominant format. Other than getting a install base in PS3 its use this gen is next to pointless, console hardware just isn't at a point to take advantage of it in the majority of games.

Next gen I'm 100% confident to say a post DVD format will be needed.

Actually, its even cheaper than Blu-ray because its extinct. HD-DVD drives go for what, 40 bucks on Ebay? It holds 30 gigs, that will be enough for most next-gen games. All they need to do is develop a faster drive and they'll have a cheap medium for their next console.

Sony doesn't own blu ray, remember pioneer and Samsung are also in the blu ray fold. But in my opinion I think they should find some way too bring back HD-dvd, because the 50 gigs isn't really needed. Only one game too my knowledge(MGS4) used up a full BD disc, but then again no one knows how next gen will turn out,. I just hope they don't stop making game disk. Down with digital distribution.

Either they go 100% DD (which woudl kill their market) or they go blu-ray. You can't go DVD next gen. Even some of my PC games are coming on 2 dvds now.

nintendo = its own media

sony = next format available. sony has always had a new format for each of its consoles. i think it will stay the same, considering the PS3's "10 year life"

MS will most certainly use blu-ray. They might start experimenting with DD games but they will use blu-ray. And to say they won't because they will have to pay Sony is naive. For one, Sony is just one of many companies involved in blu-ray. For two, MS and Sony are not "at war" with eachother, MS doesn't care that Sony is involved with blu-ray. Only one division of both corporations even compete in the same market, that being the console market. If MS doesn't use blu-ray in their next console it will hurt their market share and help sony's console market share. That's all they care about when it comes to Sony - video game consoles. MS couldn't care less about "paying Sony" to use blu-ray.

Realistically, no company will go fully DD next gen. I do expect the DVD to phase out though for gaming, does that mean Bluray will become the norm? Not necesseraly.

See MS could either take Bluray as their next format, or they could produce thei own Disc technology (pretty much like nintendo did last and current gen) with more storage capacity then DVDs and about the same as Blu-ray.

Anything is possible, by making their own tech MS would save money from licensing and such.

1. Who cares? Seriously, who cares what may or may not be the tech in machines X years down the road. Makes no diff to SW this gen.

2. If you do care, the first thing you need to agree on is when does the next gen happen.

3. DD and BD/DVD are not the only options. This is especially true if your answer to #2 is more than a couple of years from now.

4. LOL at a cow making this thread. Why do you care now? It will be another 6-8 yrs from now right?;)

I think a smart thing to do would be to go with blu-ray and make sure to use a 10x or 12x drive. I doubt sony would use a new format, the PS2 came about 2 years after DVD came in, the PS3 came about 5 months after blu-ray came in. If that trend is linear, the next format would come over a year after the PS4 is introduced. What sony could do is modify the blu-ray spec, to work with 300GB blu-rays and maybe a faster read speed. That would be a smart thing to do. Going completely DD would be very ambitious. Though if anyone would do it, it would be Microsoft. They despise blu-ray and have had the online infrastructure experience to evolve completely to DD.

I see faliure for the company who dosent use the superior storage medium.
