Let's try to keep this reasonable, I really don't want opinions on what you like or if you hate CS because you aren't good at it. For the record I play the "unpopular 1" (competitively speaking) in CS:S, but I can recognize good FPS when I see it. CS 1.6 has been the staple of FPS gaming since 99.FEAR, COD2, Doom3, Painkiller, Halo, et al have all tried to garner more recognition from the competitive scene to no avail. There hasn't been a game that has more balanced maps, a more balanced weapon system or better hit registration than CS. CS to me, is almost like a sport like basketball. It just is accepted with little changes to its core play (CS:S). Eventually there will be a new CS and the older players will move forward (maybe source). And from source to CS 2.0 etc. Halo was a good game and they completely switched up the weapons and levels and play mechanics (dual wielding, swords, etc) and now with halo3 they did even more changes. (not saying h3 is a bad game). But when a game has to flip the switch a lot it tells me it is trying to find an identity still; a good balance if you will. Counter-strike really hasn't done that (despite the divide of cs1.6 and CS:S but that can be accounted for an unwillingness to upgrade as the majority of the mechanics are similar).
So my statement is that CS is the most popular and respected FPS and its still using an 8 year old engine (HL) and CS:S is gaining in popularity each day with more minutes played than any other FPS game (halo2, gears et al). What game can dethrone CS. Personally I hope it stays just as popular as it is my favorite game.
