Americans seem to love both JRPGs and WRPGs. Japanwill only play JRPGs it seems. Why do the Japanese despise WRPGs so much?AvIdGaMeR444
i dunno i think its MAINLY a japan only problemcuz other asian countrieslike china WRPG like WoW are as big in popularity as in USA
my dad went to japan an said they just dont really LIKE americans a whole lot diff culuture over there they like themselves the most etc
NO because alot of japanses gamers are narrow minded and think that anything that comes out of the west is either shallow or a shooter
They can go ahead and have fun with there rehash generic JRPG's americans and western countriesare opend minded to ALL games not just one set.

JRPGs that sell in the West:
-Final Fantasy
-Dark Cloud sold 100k! Therefore it's a sucess!

The japanese dont really like americans....im i wouldnt be surprised if this was the reason WRPG do well over there...i guess its the whole different culture as wellDante2710
But Ipod sells well there, and Japanese seem to love American movies. A lot of American movies release in Japan.

i heard or read somewhere...that there are certain places where americans arent allowed....it kind of shocked me since i always though of the japanese to be hospitable and polite peopleProbably not, if they haven't caught on by now there's no reason to believe they ever will.
That being said, they do have a cult following in Japan.

Why do robot mech games sell so bad in the west, or the fact that left field "emotional" games seem to suffer in sales, Ico on first release was bought by exactly 17 people and a dog.Hoobinator
to bad MTV already got there.
And the Japanese buy some horrible games that wouldn't and don'tcut it in the West. (Gundam anyone)

Golden Sun , Star Ocean 3, Symphonia..someothers have sold a lot...BUT, . doesn't Matter if FF sells a million, it still sold a million and JRPG's are still popular here. Do all WRPG's sell a million here!!??? Your point has truly failed. Fact= WRPG's are not popular in Japan. PERIOD.
Also DC sold half a million in U.S FYI.

Japanese are very xenophobic. A Japanese 360 speaking Korean caused a national uproar.

I can go into bar that but I'll probably regret it. Its not a legal thing. Go tomost major US and European cities and there are no go areas for tourists.

and alot more which I dont remeber or care to name, Americans buy up Jrpg's thats the truth to say other wise is just opinion or your just in denial.
You do realize that Westerners didn't give Western RPG's a chance until they were off of PC's onto the Xbox? Well besides Diablo (which Japan doesn't like PC gaming due to ridiculous high priced component parts (for the country).
Also noting that every single high profile WRPG game *Sales Wise* is on the well Xbox.

The best selling Tales game in the West (Symphonia) sold barely over 200,000 copies, and despite Square-Enix's huge campaign DQVIII (the best selling in NA) sold barely half a million. The only truly successful JRPG series is Final Fantasy (due to a $100 million ad campaign, Kingdom Hears (no brainer), and Poke'mon (it's Nintendo).

I have a plenty of friends thats been to Japan and they say its great there. The one thing they brought up the most was how the people were so generous there. ^_^ I'm moving there when I can.On topic,I guess it's just not their taste. It's not like JRPG's sell well here.[QUOTE="Eponique"][QUOTE="Gh0st_Of_0nyx"]NO because alot of japanses gamers are narrow minded and think that anything that comes out of the west is either shallow or a shooter

JRPG's just like Anime are widely popular in U.S and the world, because they are NOT japanese things, fighting dragons, with spells and having funky looking characters...they can appeal to anyone...when it comes to Japan..medievil themes , and star wars type games are just a no no.

I'm not sure about Golden Sun but none of those games are even 3/4th to a million seller. People have to remember that Japan is smaller then the U.S. So to get the equavlilence to their game sales to ours, you must multiply everything by 2.5 exactly. So in contrast The Elder Scrolls Oblivion in Japan is just a little more popular then Tales of Symphonia is here.
Yea that Baldurs Gate was a bag of old balls that no one had ever heard of. World of warcraft? WTF is that? Ultima, Might and Magic, Forgotten Realms???? Are you on crack? Never heard of 'em.You do realize that Westerners didn't give Western RPG's a chance until they were off of PC's onto the Xbox? The japanese dont really like americans...i wouldnt be surprised if this was the reason WRPG dont do well over there...i guess its the whole different culture as wellDante2710Garbage. Firstly, Japan is one of the USA's strongest foreign allies. Second, the iPod and McDonald's are enormously popular in Japan - slapping down the weak "teh Japanese don't like teh American products" argument. Third, when I was in Japan - I made alot of friends and the Japanese people were generally very nice and helpful. This thread simply comes down to the matter of taste. They simply don't like WRPGs. Many Americans also don't like WRPGs - but, obviously, they don't "dislike Americans".

Anime popular in the U.S.?
I'm sorry but the anime industry is light years away from even being mainstream.
Anime DVD sales are nowhere near the movie sales, Inuyasha series for example has only sold a combined total of 1 million DVD's, and with series still not reaching prime time or past the Adult Swim or Saturday morning cartoon block. Yes it is more popular then ever but that isn't really saying much, anime doesn't really expand beyond those very few hit Saturday morning cartoons alongside with their highschool and college niche.
Also Star Wars is huge in Japan, alongside Lord of the Rings...

First of all most of the game you listed aren't mainstream. Actually the only one being is World of Warcraft which came out a few years ago. High sales doesn't always = mainstream. CounterStrike has outsold any Halo game, yet if I ask someone off the street most wouldn't know what CounterStrike is but instantly reconize Halo.

Just ignore them and their conspiracy theories, these are the same people who claim that people who have a life and just focus on playing games from time to time are going to kill the entire game industry.

Believe it or not......some people do.
USA & UK are the 2 biggest nations that cant keep thier idenity for 5 seconds, we borrow from all cultures, we dont exactly stranghten our own cultures, more of the case we tare it down into an unrecognizable mess.
Except maybe US with its Wargasms ( j/k j/k ).
Japan especially likes thier own culture to the point where they dont really pay interest in others, makes sense though because they have a strong themed artistic influence.
I kinda rambled i think you can get the point.

Don't confuse the UK with the USA. Most areas in the UK have an extremely strong regional identity. Apart from England (which maintains strong regional identities in many areas)they have a strong cultural (though not necessarily hemoginous)and national identity (much of it built on a hatred of the English! lol). England, especially in the SE, suffers from a large degree of multiculturalism and almost a paranoia of celebrating its Englishness for fear of alienating groups and appearing racist, although this has begun to be challenged with people pushing for a greater celebration of St George's Day and a removal of the stigma of flying the Union Jack and/or George's Cross. *exhales* lolUSA & UK are the 2 biggest nations that cant keep thier idenity for 5 seconds, we borrow from all cultures, we dont exactly stranghten our own cultures, more of the case we tare it down into an unrecognizable mess.

Japan. A different culture. They have different tastes in video games. Who would've thought?
because they hated America since WW2liquidsnake1987
Umm...today's generation of Japanese don't really care about what happened in WW2. If you ask someone in their 60's-70's, they may still hold some resentment.

I know, I'm Welsh ... but nowhere in the UK really has a strong aesthetical culture now really does it? compared to France for example.
Our culture for the most part is, WEEKENDS BINGE DRINKING, Football/Rugby , Heavily multicultural, Jumping on every foreign fad.
Hell we even binge off American culture alot ... god knows why >>
Sure we are all devided by our little difference, but down to the core, theres not much aesthetically pleaseing for the rest of the world to enjoy, although this could be a case of "the grass is always greener on the other side" by me though.

I would argue the Northern Irish (on both sides), Scots, Welsh, Cornish, the black country, etc all have extremely strong identities that clearly define them. Yes everyone shares common traits but they all have seperate ones too.If you don't believe me head to Northern Ireland on the 12th or a celtic festival in Ireland, Wales or Scotland. (as examples). I read a thesis by a Danish scholar studying in the Black Country, whos English was fair at best, who was stunned to find he could understand much of thelocal dialect which had survived over a 1000 years.
Don't get me wrong, with TV and the internet cultural boundaries are eroding in the UK but they are still there.
EDIT this is all a little off topic and high brow for SW!:P
