This gen has been a huge lack in JRPG's unlike last gen. Last gen we had Kingdom Hearts I and II, Dragon Quest VII, Final Fantasy X and XII, Persona etc...

There's hardly anything these days. I don't think I've played a single JRPG on consoles this gen. But the JRPGs i played on DS were very good like The World Ends With You, Pokemon, and Radiant Historia.

Do you think next gen we will have more JRPG's? or will they just stay on handhelds?

I hope we get more JRPG's on consoles, but they do need to move on from what they've been doing for the last 15 years (a few exemptions, naturally).

I'll be up front about this. Like it or not the genre's mainstream(ish) appeal is largely dependent on Square. For Square to turn things around they need to learn to develop games within a more reasonable amount of time. Getting professional writers would also help. At least make sure the story and characters are good if you're going to subject players to long cut scenes. We could use some fresh faces with big budgets too. Who else is there with big budgets that do jrpgs? NamcoBandai is the only other possible canidate I can think of and they just haven't been performing to great this gen.

As you mentioned, there have been a few JRPGs this generation, namely the ones on the DS (it is a current gen system). TWEWY is awesome, but we also have DQIX, Resonance of Fate, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep and I personally really enjoyed FFXIII.

They just plain out suck this gen at least the ones i played. Its like there all rush jobs except FF13 but it missed so bad in the story and how the game played. To get my fix been playing The Last Remnant and thats a very up and down game with you like it one minute then your like why did i get this the next.

Pick up your psp and pick up your ds. Rpgs are expensive and console games are even more expensive. Handhelds are where its at.

They left consoles and went to handhelds. The DS and PSP have some of the best JRPGs I've played in a long time.

JRPG's are in FULL FORCE on handhelds and this will most likely continue with the Nintendo 3DS and Playstation Vita. JRPG's are made for the Japanese and they perfer handhelds these days.

Buy a handheld or look into RPG maker games. JRPGs are still there but just more of a niche genre now. I doubt they will ever become big again for the same reason adventure games won't, people want action and hate watching cutscenes. It sucks but blame the mainstream I guess.

Have a feeling the Vita will attracted allot of Jdevs (and there by JRPGs). Cheap dev cost may lead to lots of unique games (i hope)

As an industry leader, well simply put yes(origional question), but they have to ditch the old fans, and create new ones.

JRPGs have become copy and past worse then W shooters. Most still use an out dated battle system(amongst other gameplay elements) from the 90s. The game industry made huge huge developments since then, but most Jdevs seem bogged down in the past.

Their story elements have become extreme cliche most the time, while WRPGsand Wact/adv have become Hollywood level cinematic

The few devs that dare to be different (valkryia Chronicles, Demon souls) are met with huge praise.

If others follow, then J devs could once again have a huge influence in the industry.

The market in terms of consoles, have all become mainly FPS crowded. Also probably doesn't help with the fact that journalists keep going on about how JRPG's need to be more like WRPG's which is bull **** In a lot of reviews I've read, on say WKC2 reviews etc. Keep saying how it needs to be more like a WRPG, rather then speaking of the game itself >_

As a big fan of JRPG's, I'm sad to see that the days of a lot of QUALITY console JRPG's are probably over. Other than Final Fantasy titles and the occasional Tales title, there won't be to much.

That being said, the 3DS and Vita are almost guarenteed to have plenty of JRPG's in full swing. I'm really excited for the Vita because more "handheld RPGS" will feel more console-like.

I will agree that they are not many on consoles, but there are some good ones even though they are few in numbers. It seems they all moved to handhelds. Which makes me sad since I like playing my rpgs on myhome console not on my handheld.

There's still White Knight Chronicles, Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean 4.

I'm dissapointed by the lack of good JRPGs this generation. I'm really looking forward to Tales of Graces f and Tales of Xillia.

You forget that the JRPG is used nowadays more as a storytelling device than an actual game. Bogged down in the past? It can also be seen as "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Even the most praised JRPGs of this gen (such as Persona 4) used simple variations of these "out dated" battle system.

Cliche story elements? I'll concede if you concede that the WRPG and other Western genres also fall prey to similar cliches. All WRPGs use the same "save the world" plot as JRPGs, the only difference being that the player is in slightly better control of the story path. And even then, there's generally only two possible endings: save it, or doom it. As for the cinematic comment, I'll again not comment, as ending everything with a "Hollywood" feel is native to this culture.

Huge praise for those that emulate WRPGs. Well, the game's own merits aside, why else do you think that is, hmm?

That last line effectively states that the JRPG should conform to the WRPG to succeed. Wouldn't be a JRPG then, would it?

What people who constantly claim that JRPGs should change forget is that just because it seems repetitive and cliche'd to you doesn't mean it is so in the country of origin. I'm certain summer blockbusters from Hollywood all look the same in a foreign country. Same way Spanish soap operas all look like the same contrite love story rehashed and meandered over the course of 150 episodes. The JRPG is a genre that cannot be changed to be made better. It is what it is, and you have to accept it for that reason. Asking it to change to suit what's currently "in" defeats the purpose of the genre.

Pesona 4 is a last gen game, PS2 not a current gen console:?

The best rated console JRPG this gen is Demon souls(M89) (followed by VC[M86]). Those 2 games experimented allot for JRPGs in terms of gameplay and to a lesser degree story. And it payed of hugely.

Every single other genre has evolved leeps and bounds since JRPGs 90s era dominance.

FPS, TPS, action adventure, RTS, platformer, racing, puzzle, sports, wrpgs, have all evolved greatly, no exponentially. But JRPGs have mostly just upped the graphics

Thats ********* pathetic,

@Dercoo how have WRPG's evolved?

spookykid143

Off the top of my head

Gameplay: Gotten allot more fast paced, refined, and genre wide are very spread out in styl e(not all play identically). Almost everygame(bar sequels) seems to have a unique way of playing. Heck even story connected sequels often make many gameplay changes.

Story: Story are told and presented in much better. WRPGs used to be lacking of any story elements, at all (reason why JRPGs really exploaded in late 90s). Now with games like Kotor, Dragon Age, and Mass effect they are hugely cinematic and full of lively and memorable characters.

World: WRPGs have maintained their huge open world that your free to explore and interact in increasingly varied ways.

Not really trying to say WRPGs are better (most of my favorite RPGs are J), but I've noticed WRPGs have started to evolve allot since Kotor, especially in their former weakest point (story)

JRPG makers just seem to be taking less risks this gen on consoles, which is really, just depressing for me:(

People keep saying the good JRPGs are on the handhelds. Well, I tried playing some off of my little brother's DS. The only one I like so far is Final Fantasy IV which is of course a remake.

What are the new JRPGs that are good? I tried looking at reviews on this site and not that many are rated high. Can someone list their favorite JRPGs on the DS?

So far I tried the mario and DQ rpgs but lost interest in them quick. Felt too childish and boring. I was never a a big DQ fan though. Always felt their stories and gameplay were just too simple. What are games with a good storyline like FFIV?

I heard this with ME2 a lot yet when I played it it felt like playing a washed out Uncharted or Gears with some weak rpg elements thrown into it hopefully witcher 2 wont disappoint.
